The buriti palm (Mauritia flexuosa L. f.) serves as a raw material for the food, pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries but it has a low germination rate and seed viability, which are directly related to the morphological characteristics of the fruits and seeds. Biometric characterization provides information necessary for the differentiation, characterization of ecological and genetic aspects of different species and populations of the same group, and can help in the conservation and propagation of species. The current work performed the biometric characterization of fruits and diaspores of Mauritia flexuosa from a cultivation environment in the Brazilian Cerrado. 100 fruits were randomly sampled, which were measured in length, width, thickness, individual weight, diaspore length, diaspore width, diaspore thickness and individual diaspore weight. Fruits were classified as red (Hue 10 R 4/8) and yellow-orange diaspores (Hue 7.5 YR 8/8). Data for each characteristic were submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. The fruits varied by 6.56% in length, 4.38% in width and 4.26% in thickness while the diaspores varied by 8.17% in length, 9.29% in width and 9.62% in thickness. The variables fruit weight and diaspore weight showed the greatest variations, 12.12% and 23.86%, respectively. There was a positive correlation between width and thickness (0.90). The small variation in biometric dimensions indicates that the species has little variability. As variáveis peso do fruto e peso do diásporo apresentaram maiores variações, 12,12% e 23,86%, respectivamente.

Studies on biometry are considered important tools for understanding the germination process of seeds. Moreover, the ex-situ con- servation of palm seeds can cause loss of viability over time. The present study aimed to evaluate the biometric characterization and the effect of storage on the seed germination of the Triangle Palm (Dypsis decaryi), a widely used species in Brazilian landscaping. Two independent studies were conducted: I) biometric characterization of diaspores and II) effect of storage in seed germination. For biometry, a sample of 100 diaspores was used and the length, width and thickness were measured. Biometric data were ana- lyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The seeds were packed in transparent plastic bags kept in a refrigerator (20 ± 2 ºC and 80% relative humidity) for storage evaluation. The experimental design was entirely randomized. The treatments consisted of six storage periods (0 - control, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days); there were four repetitions and 25 seeds per plot. The germination percentage and germination speed index were evaluated. Diaspores showed little variation in their biometric charac- teristics, with a mean of 18.39 mm in length, 16.10 mm in width and 15.96 mm in thickness. There was significant and positive correlation between all biometric characteristics. It was observed that germination remained stable until 30 days of storage (90%), with a gradual percentage decrease in later periods. The seed storage allowed to maintain its viability and longevity with the ability to germinate, reaching a germination percentage of 63% after 150 days of storage

The demand for sustainable agricultural production systems is increasing, and using growth-promoting microorganisms in plants has stood out because it decreases or even replaces chemical fertilizer use, reducing production costs. This study aimed to evaluate the response of some microorganisms applied to the seedlings of primary orchids cultivated in Brazil (Phalaenopsis sp. 'Taisuco Swan', Cymbidium atropurpureum, and Dendrobium secundum). The experimental design was completely randomized. There were seven treatments (absence of microorganisms – control, Trichoderma sp. in sodium alginate, Trichoderma sp. in clay, Trichoderma sp. in sodium alginate and clay, Trichoderma sp. in a liquid medium, Azospirillum brasilense + Bacillus subtilis in a liquid medium, and Bacillus pumilus in a liquid medium), four replications, and three plants per plot. The seedlings were grown in a greenhouse and evaluated 190 days after microorganism inoculation. The evaluation of morpho-physiological characteristics differed according to the particularities of each genus. The Bacillus pumilus and Azospirillum brasilense + Bacillus subtilis rhizobacteria in a liquid medium for Phalaenopsis sp. 'Taisuco Swan' and the Trichoderma sp. fungus in a liquid medium for Cymbidium atropurpureum increased seedling growth and development. Azospirillum brasilense + Bacillus subtilis in a liquid medium for the Dendrobium secundum orchid promoted more root biomass. Using beneficial microorganisms in orchid cultivation is promising, and seedling growth and development depend on their inoculation and the morpho-physiological characteristics of each plant

Importance of Early Recognition of Arterial Hypertension in Children and Adolescents: The Nursing Function in Ambulatory Monitoring

    Get PDF
Arterial hypertension is considered an epidemic, remaining as the main cause of death and global disability. As high blood pressure in childhood is highly predictive of high blood pressure in adulthood, there has been a growing interest in the early recognition of this condition in the pediatric population, through outpatient screening in children over three years of age. Objective: to emphasize the importance of routine monitoring of blood pressure measurement in children and adolescents in childcare consultations. Methodology: This is a literature review of published articles, searched through the PubMed, Virtual Health Library and Google Scholar databases. Results: 12 scientific articles were selected as the data source for the present study, seven in English and five in Portuguese. Conclusion: the measurement of blood pressure in all consultations with children is important. If the disease is identified, treatment must be instituted, which will vary between non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies, which should be introduced for all pediatric patients with blood pressure values above the acceptable percentile for age. In this sense, it is pertinent that nurses acquire and develop skills that make it possible to implement strategies for the prevention of hypertension, as well as the early identification of children and adolescents at risk of arterial hypertension

Twenty-eight Fischer male rats were divided into four groups: control group (CG), exposed to the ambient air, and groups exposed to formaldehyde (FA) at concentrations of 1% (FA1%), 5% (FA5%) and 10% (FA10%). Kidney function was assessed by dosage of uric acid, creatinine and urea. Morphometry was performed on the thickness of the lumen of Bowman's capsule and diameter of the lumen of the renal tubules. We evaluated the redox imbalance through the catalase and superoxide dismutase activity as well as oxidative damage by lipid peroxidation. Inflammatory chemokines CCL2, CCL3 and CCL5 were analyzed by enzyme immunoassays. There was an increase in the concentration of urea in FA10% compared with CG and FA1%. The levels of creatinine, renal lumen and lipid peroxidation increased in all FA-treated groups compared with CG. The concentration of uric acid in FA10% was lower compared with all other groups. There was an increase in the space of Bowman's capsule in FA5% and FA10% compared with CG and FA1%. However, the superoxide dismutase activity was higher in FA5% compared with other groups while CCL5 was higher in FA1% compared with CG. The exposure to formaldehyde in a short period of time leads to changes in the kidney function, inflammation and morphology, as well as promoted the increase of superoxide dismutase activity and oxidative damage
