    Efforts are directed towards the minimization, management and disposal of highly radioactive nuclear waste. Partitioning of nuclear waste and transmutation of long-lived isotopes are subject of investigations. These studies imply the needs for the underlying nuclear databases. In this respect, accurate knowledge of neutron and proton induced nuclear reactions in the intermediate- and high-energy domains is important and EFNUDAT aims at networking European facilities for such nuclear data measurements

    Low sensitivity to optical feedback and optical injection of discrete mode lasers

    In this paper, we demonstrate the low sensitivity to both external optical feedback and external optical injection of a new type of extremely low cost single-mode lasers, called "discrete mode" (DM) lasers. The DM lasers are obtained from ridge waveguide Fabry Perot (FP) lasers, in which the effective refractive index of the lasing mode has been perturbed. These lasers exhibit a low sensitivity to external optical feedback since the coherence collapse threshold is around 5 dB higher in comparison to a commercial DFB laser

    Se analiza la obra de Georges Rouy, cĂ©lebre botĂĄnico francĂ©s, mediante el estudio de sus materiales asĂ­ como del tratamiento del gĂ©nero Carex (Cyperaceae) en la Flore de France. Se valora favorablemente el conocimiento que el autor demuestra sobre este gĂ©nero, puesto de manifi esto al incluir subgĂ©neros en la clasifi caciĂłn taxonĂłmica. Asimismo la sinonimia que propone para cada nombre y las descripciones de los taxones son muy completas. Al contrario, se valora negativamente la excesiva fragmentaciĂłn que estableciĂł, pues incluyĂł demasiadas secciones y subsecciones. Finalmente, su rechazo a utilizar las normas nomenclaturales establecidas por el CĂłdigo de Nomenclatura BotĂĄnica conduce a la confusiĂłn e impide que la mayorĂ­a de sus nombres sean vĂĄlidos.The George Rouy’s work, a famous French botanist, is studied by means of his material and literature of the genus Carex (Cyperaceae). We assess positively the knowledge that he demonstrated of this genus; because of the subgenera differentiated in his treatment, besides the complete synonymy presented for each name and the taxa descriptions. But he splitted excessively the infrageneric classifi cation including too many sections and subsections. Finally, most of the names he proposed are invalid because of his rejection of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature recommendations and rules

    This work presents the generation of 3.5 ps pulses at a repetition rate of 10 GHz and the optimization of the pulse spectrum. The output pulses are near transform limited and have pulse pedestals that are virtually eliminated to 35 dB down from the peak of the pulse, thus providing a source suitable for use in 80 Gb/s OTDM systems

    Optimized pulse source employing an externally injected gain-switched laser diode in conjunction with a nonlinearly chirped grating

    In this paper, we demonstrate the generation of transform-limited short optical pulses, which display excellent spectral and temporal qualities by employing a novel technology, based on an externally injected gain-switched laser in conjunction with a nonlinearly chirped grating. Using this technique, 3.5-ps optical pulses exhibiting a time-bandwidth product (TBP) of 0.45 are generated, which are suitable for use in high-speed 80 Gb/s optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) communications systems. The numerical integration of a set of rate equations using suitable parameters for the devices used in the experiments were carried out to further confirm the feasibility of the proposed method for developing an optimized pulse source for high-speed photonic systems

    The clinical and biological impact of new pathogen inactivation technologies on platelet concentrates.

    Since 1990, several techniques have been developed to photochemically inactivate pathogens in platelet concentrates, potentially leading to safer transfusion therapy. The three most common methods are amotosalen/UVA (INTERCEPT Blood System), riboflavin/UVA-UVB (MIRASOL PRT), and UVC (Theraflex-UV). We review the biology of pathogen inactivation methods, present their efficacy in reducing pathogens, discuss their impact on the functional aspects of treated platelets, and review clinical studies showing the clinical efficiency of the pathogen inactivation methods and their possible toxicity

    CLIC simulations from the start of the linac to the interaction point

    Simulations for linear colliders are traditionally performed separately for the different sub-systems, like damping ring, bunch compressor, linac, and beam delivery. The beam properties are usually passed from one sub-system to the other via bunch charge, RMS transverse emittances, RMS bunch length, average energy and RMS energy spread. It is implicitly assumed that the detailed 6D correlations in the beam distribution are not relevant for the achievable luminosity. However, it has recently been shown that those correlations can have a strong effect on the beam-beam interaction. We present first results on CLIC simulations that integrate linac, beam delivery, and beam-beam interaction. These integrated simulations also allow a better simulation of time-dependent effects, like ground perturbations and interference between several beam-based feedbacks
