Laminoplasty versus laminectomy for multi-level cervical spondylotic myelopathy: a systematic review of the literature
BACKGROUND: There is considerable controversy as to which posterior technique is best for the treatment of multi-level cervical spondylotic myelopathy. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiographic results and complications of laminoplasty (LAMP) and laminectomy (LAMT) in the treatment of multi-level cervical spondylotic myelopathy. METHODS: We reviewed and analyzed papers published from January 1966 and June 2013 regarding the comparison of LAMP and LAMT for multi-level cervical spondylotic myelopathy. Statistical comparisons were made when appropriate. RESULTS: Fifteen studies were included in this systematic review. There was no significant difference in the incidence of surgical complications between LAMP and LAMT. Compared to conventional LAMT and skip LAMT, postoperative ROM was more limited in LAMP, but this was still superior to postoperative ROM following LAMT with fusion. Postoperative kyphosis occurred in 8/180 (4.44%) in LAMP and 13/205 (6.34%) in LAMT, whereas no cases of kyphosis were reported for skip LAMT. Skip LAMT appears to have better clinical outcomes than LAMP, while the outcome was similar between LAMP and LAMT with fusion. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these results, a claim of superiority for laminoplasty or laminectomy was not justified. In deciding between the two procedures, the risks of surgical and neurological complications, and radiologic and clinical outcome, must be taken into consideration if both options are available in multi-level cervical spondylotic myelopathy
Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome
The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead
The development of private businesses in China
China’s economic development since 1978 has been fuelled largely by a new private sector that has depended on entrepreneurship. In 1978 the private sector virtually did not exist. In 2005 it was estimated that about one-quarter of gross domestic product (GDP) was produced by the domestic private sector. However, the academic discourse on China’s private sector is lagging behind the sector’s actual development. Before the market reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, China relied on state entrepreneurship. When the model of state entrepreneurship began to run out of energy, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) turned to private entrepreneurship as a way of sustaining and accelerating economic development. What were the driving forces behind this rapid growth? An important reason was raw entrepreneurship. This concept has been introduced in the paper as a way of distinguishing new, green-field private firms from privatised SOEs. The definition of raw entrepreneurship or green-field enterprises included two types of genuine private firms: geti gongshanghu and siying qiye. The gaizhi, or privatised firms, have been deliberately excluded in an attempt to generate a study that focussed on the relatively untold story of private business rather than the much better documented history of reformed SOEs. This paper documents the development, history and the present situation of Chinese private enterprises with emphasis on the private sector in Zhejiang province, because private businesses in that province have been best exemplified by raw entrepreneurship and developed more rapidly relative to many other provinces in China
Models of trust-sharing in Chinese private enterprises
This paper presents two related models of development patterns of Chinese private enterprises. They illustrate incentive-based reasons for ownership arrangements of private enterprises, and highlight how institutional foundations of trust, particularly government and family-based cultural values, play an important role in influencing the development of private enterprises. These models attempt to explain why government and family-based culture are crucial for the ownership structure and management of private enterprises. The main argument in the models is that the structure of family businesses can be viewed, in essence, as a form of trust-sharing (Guanxi-sharing) arrangement within the firm. Furthermore, the increase in the prevalence of family businesses can be seen as a result of family trust replacing government trust in the firm\u27s economic activities
Government and family guanxi in Chinese private enterprises
Domestic private enterprises have dramatically re-emerged in China\u27s unique transition from a planned to a market-oriented economy, where the private sector plays an increasingly important role. Over the last quarter of a century, there has been a decline in \u27red-hat\u27 enterprises and an increased dominance of family businesses among private enterprises.This paper employs the concept of trust, which stems from traditional culture and comprises two important components (government and family), to investigate the changing patterns of corporate governance. The core argument of this paper is that family trust is replacing government trust within Chinese private enterprises. The study of the determinants of government and family trust (Guanxi) of this paper is based on a survey conducted in 2006 over 296 private enterprises in Ningbo China. The empirical results show that private firms prefer family members to the government for co-operation as the firm ages and the instability of the business environment increases. The findings of this paper give additional support to our understanding of why family businesses constitute the majority of Chinese private firms. The results also reflect the different effects of government and family Guanxi on the firm\u27s economic activities, representing respectively the separation or combination of ownership and control in terms of corporate governance in private firms

Estimation of Forest Structural Attributes Using Spectral Indices and Point Clouds from UAS-Based Multispectral and RGB Imageries
Forest structural attributes are key indicators for parameterization of forest growth models, which play key roles in understanding the biophysical processes and function of the forest ecosystem. In this study, UAS-based multispectral and RGB imageries were used to estimate forest structural attributes in planted subtropical forests. The point clouds were generated from multispectral and RGB imageries using the digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) approach. Different suits of spectral and structural metrics (i.e., wide-band spectral indices and point cloud metrics) derived from multispectral and RGB imageries were compared and assessed. The selected spectral and structural metrics were used to fit partial least squares (PLS) regression models individually and in combination to estimate forest structural attributes (i.e., Lorey’s mean height (HL) and volume(V)), and the capabilities of multispectral- and RGB-derived spectral and structural metrics in predicting forest structural attributes in various stem density forests were assessed and compared. The results indicated that the derived DAP point clouds had perfect visual effects and that most of the structural metrics extracted from the multispectral DAP point cloud were highly correlated with the metrics derived from the RGB DAP point cloud (R2 > 0.75). Although the models including only spectral indices had the capability to predict forest structural attributes with relatively high accuracies (R2 = 0.56–0.69, relative Root-Mean-Square-Error (RMSE) = 10.88–21.92%), the models with spectral and structural metrics had higher accuracies (R2 = 0.82–0.93, relative RMSE = 4.60–14.17%). Moreover, the models fitted using multispectral- and RGB-derived metrics had similar accuracies (∆R2 = 0–0.02, ∆ relative RMSE = 0.18–0.44%). In addition, the combo models fitted with stratified sample plots had relatively higher accuracies than those fitted with all of the sample plots (∆R2 = 0–0.07, ∆ relative RMSE = 0.49–3.08%), and the accuracies increased with increasing stem density
Evaluation of Habitat Suitability for Asian Elephants in Sipsongpanna under Climate Change by Coupling Multi-Source Remote Sensing Products with MaxEnt Model
The Asian elephant (Elephas maximus Linnaeus) is a globally endangered species, an internationally protected species, and a first-class protected animal in China. However, future climate change and human activities exacerbate the instability of its habitat range, leading to a possible reduction in the range. By using multi-source remote sensing data and products, as well as climate change models, including ASTER GDEM v3, Landsat8 OLI image and ClimateAP, we examined the effects of ecological factors related to climate and natural and anthropogenic influences on the distribution of Asian elephants in Sipsongpanna. Multiyear elephant field tracking data were used with a MaxEnt species distribution model and the climate model. First, the distribution of Asian elephants in potentially suitable areas in Sipsongpanna was simulated under current climatic conditions without considering human activities. The predicted distribution was verified by existing Asian elephant migration trajectories. Subsequently, the distribution of potentially suitable areas for Asian elephants in Sipsongpanna was simulated under two climate change scenarios (RCP4.5, RCP8.5) in three periods (2025, 2055, and 2085). The changes in potentially suitable areas for Asian elephants in Sipsongpanna were analyzed under multiple climate change scenarios for the current (2017) and different future periods by considering the effects of human activities. The results show the following: (1) under anthropogenic interference (AI), the optimal MaxEnt model has a high prediction accuracy with the area under the curve (AUC) of 0.913. The feature combination (FC) includes linear, quadratic, and threshold features, and the regularization multiplier (RM) is 2.1. (2) Jackknife analyses of the non-anthropogenic interference (NAI) and anthropogenic interference (AI) scenarios indicate that topography (altitude (Alt)), temperature (mean warmest month temperature (MWMT)), and precipitation (mean annual precipitation (MAP)) are the top three factors influencing the distribution of Asian elephants. (3) The total area suitable for Asian elephants under current climate conditions and AI accounts for 46.35% of the total area. Areas of high suitability (occurrence probability >0.5) are located in Jinghong City in central Sipsongpanna and Mengla County in southeastern Sipsongpanna. Among them, the minimum habitat range and ecological corridors are mainly located in Mengman Town, Mohan Town, Mengla Town, Mengban Township, Dadugang Township, and Mengwang Township. (4) The change in potentially suitable areas for Asian elephants between current and future conditions is small under AI and large under undisturbed conditions
