Discovery of high proper motion ancient white dwarfs: nearby massive compact halo objects?
We present the discovery and spectroscopic identification of two very high
proper motion ancient white dwarf stars, found in a systematic proper motion
survey. Their kinematics and apparent magnitude clearly indicate that they are
halo members, while their optical spectra are almost identical to the recently
identified cool Halo white dwarf WD0346+246. Canonical stellar halo models
predict a white dwarf volume density of two orders of magnitude less than the
approx 7*10^{-4} Solar masses per pc^{-3} inferred from this survey. With the
caveat that the sample size is very small, it appears that a significant
fraction, about 10%, of the local dark matter halo is in the form of very old,

Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus in dairy sheep.
International audienceThe purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriage of dairy sheep in farms producing cheeses manufactured with raw ewe's milk. The study showed that 29% of ewes carried S. aureus in their nares. The genetic diversity of the 136 isolates recovered from the anterior nares of the ewes, from the ambient air of the milking parlour and from cheeses was investigated using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of DNA SmaI digests. The genotyping results showed that 75 out of 106 isolates recovered from nasal carriage in dairy sheep belonged to a dominant pattern (previously named OV) and a genetically related pattern (named OV'). The same profile (OV or OV') was found in the ambient air and cheeses, suggesting a continuum between isolates within these different compartments
Conjugate 18cm OH Satellite Lines at a Cosmological Distance
We have detected the two 18cm OH satellite lines from the
source PKS1413+135, the 1720 MHz line in emission and the 1612 MHz line in
absorption. The 1720 MHz luminosity is , more than
an order of magnitude larger than that of any other known 1720 MHz maser. The
profiles of the two satellite lines are conjugate, implying that they arise in
the same gas. This allows us to test for any changes in the values of
fundamental constants, without being affected by systematic uncertainties
arising from relative motions between the gas clouds in which the different

The role of antibiotics in the treatment of chronic prostatitis: A consensus statement
Practical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic prostatitis are presented. Chronic prostatitis is classified as chronic bacterial prostatitis (culture-positive) and chronic inflammatory prostatitis (culture-negative). If chronic bacterial prostatitis is suspected, based on relevant symptoms or recurrent UTIs, underlying urological conditions should be excluded by the following tests: rectal examination, midstream urine culture and residual urine. The diagnosis should be confirmed by the Meares and Stamey technique. Antibiotic therapy is recommended for acute exacerbations of chronic prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis and chronic inflammatory prostatitis, if there is clinical, bacteriological or supporting immunological evidence of prostate infection. Unless a patient presents with fever, antibiotic treatment should not be initiated immediately except in cases of acute prostatitis or acute episodes in a patient with chronic bacterial prostatitis. The work-up, with the appropriate investigations should be done first, within a reasonable time period which, preferably, should not be longer than 1 week. During this period, nonspecific treatment, such as appropriate analgesia to relieve symptoms, should be given. The minimum duration of antibiotic treatment should be 2-4 weeks. If there is no improvement in symptoms, treatment should be stopped and reconsidered. However, if there is improvement, it should be continued for at least a further 2-4 weeks to achieve clinical cure and, hopefully, eradication of the causative pathogen. Antibiotic treatment should not be given for 6-8 weeks without an appraisal of its effectiveness. Currently used antibiotics are reviewed. Of these, the fluoroquinolones ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin are recommended because of their favourable antibacterial spectrum and pharmacokinetic profile. A number of clinical trials are recommended and a standard study design is proposed to help resolve some outstanding issues
DENIS-P J104814.7-395606.1: An M9 dwarfs at about 4 pc
We present the discovery of a previously unknown member of the immediate
solar neighbourhood, DENIS-P J104814.7-395606.1 (hereafter DENIS 1048-39),
identified while mining the DENIS database for new nearby stars. A HIRES
echelle spectrum obtained with the 10-m Keck telescope shows that it is an M9
dwarf. DENIS 1048-39 has a very bright apparent magnitude (I=12.67) for its
spectral type and colour (I-J=3.07), and is therefore very nearby. If it is
single its distance is only 4.1 +- 0.6pc, ranking it as between our twelfth and
fortyth closest neighbour. It is also the closest star or brown dwarf with a
spectral type later than M7V. Its proper motion was determined through
comparison of Sky atlas Schmidt plates, scanned by the MAMA microdensitometer,
with the DENIS images. At 1.53"/yr it further attests the closeness of DENIS
1048-39, and hence its dwarf status. These characteristics make it an obvious

Examining the role of wine brand love on brand loyalty: a multi-country comparison
This study develops and tests a model through a multi-country study that considers consumer wine knowledge and wine experience, wine brand trust and wine brand satisfaction as antecedents of wine brand love, and wine brand loyalty as a consequence of wine brand love. Data were collected in five wine-producing countries (Australia, Chile, France, Mexico and Portugal) with a final sample of 3462 completed surveys. Hypotheses were tested with structural equation modeling and the findings confirm the importance of brand love as both a mediator and direct influence on brand loyalty for wine consumers. Furthermore, brand satisfaction was positively and significantly related to brand love. In addition, wine experience, rather than wine knowledge, positively influenced brand trust and satisfaction. Amplicon-based next-generation sequencing of plasma cell-free DNA for detection of driver and resistance mutations in advanced non-small cell lung cancer
BACKGROUND:
Genomic analysis of plasma cell-free DNA is transforming lung cancer care; however, available assays are limited by cost, turnaround time, and imperfect accuracy. Here, we study amplicon-based plasma next-generation sequencing (NGS), rather than hybrid-capture-based plasma NGS, hypothesizing this would allow sensitive detection and monitoring of driver and resistance mutations in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
PATIENTS AND METHODS:
Plasma samples from patients with NSCLC and a known targetable genotype (EGFR, ALK/ROS1, and other rare genotypes) were collected while on therapy and analyzed blinded to tumor genotype. Plasma NGS was carried out using enhanced tagged amplicon sequencing of hotspots and coding regions from 36 genes, as well as intronic coverage for detection of ALK/ROS1 fusions. Diagnostic accuracy was compared with plasma droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) and tumor genotype.
RESULTS:
A total of 168 specimens from 46 patients were studied. Matched plasma NGS and ddPCR across 120 variants from 80 samples revealed high concordance of allelic fraction (R2 = 0.95). Pretreatment, sensitivity of plasma NGS for the detection of EGFR driver mutations was 100% (30/30), compared with 87% for ddPCR (26/30). A full spectrum of rare driver oncogenic mutations could be detected including sensitive detection of ALK/ROS1 fusions (8/9 detected, 89%). Studying 25 patients positive for EGFR T790M that developed resistance to osimertinib, 15 resistance mechanisms could be detected including tertiary EGFR mutations (C797S, Q791P) and mutations or amplifications of non-EGFR genes, some of which could be detected pretreatment or months before progression.
CONCLUSIONS:
This blinded analysis demonstrates the ability of amplicon-based plasma NGS to detect a full range of targetable genotypes in NSCLC, including fusion genes, with high accuracy. The ability of plasma NGS to detect a range of preexisting and acquired resistance mechanisms highlights its potential value as an alternative to single mutation digital PCR-based plasma assays for personalizing treatment of TKI resistance in lung cancer
The Role of Pressure in GMC Formation II: The H_2 - Pressure Relation
We show that the ratio of molecular to atomic gas in galaxies is determined
by hydrostatic pressure and that the relation between the two is nearly linear.
The pressure relation is shown to be good over three orders of magnitude for 14
galaxies including dwarfs, HI-rich, and H_2-rich galaxies as well as the Milky
Way. The sample spans a factor of five in mean metallicity. The rms scatter of
individual points of the relation is only about a factor of two for all the
galaxies, though some show much more scatter than others. Using these results,
we propose a modified star formation prescription based on pressure determining
the degree to which the ISM is molecular. The formulation is different in high
and low pressure regimes defined by whether the gas is primarily atomic or
primarily molecular. This formulation can be implemented in simulations and
provides a more appropriate treatment of the outer regions of spiral galaxies
and molecule-poor systems such as dwarf irregulars and damped Lyman-alpha

A new low-dispersion objective-prism search for low-redshift (z<0.045)
emission-line galaxies (ELG) has been carried out by the Universidad
Complutense de Madrid with the Schmidt Telescope at the Calar-Alto Observatory.
This is a continuation of the UCM Survey, which was performed by visual
selection of candidates in photographic plates via the presence of the
Halpha+[NII]6584 blend in emission. In this new list we have applied an
automatic procedure, fully developed by us, for selecting and analyzing the ELG
candidates on the digitized images obtained with the MAMA machine. The analyzed
region of the sky covers 189 square degrees in nine fields near R.A.=14h & 17h,
Dec=25 deg. The final sample contains 113 candidates. Special effort has been
made to obtain a large amount of information directly from our uncalibrated
plates by using several external calibrations. The parameters obtained for the
ELG candidates allow for the study of the statistical properties for the
