    Developing a corpus of strategic conversation in The Settlers of Catan

    International audienceWe describe a dialogue model and an implemented annotation scheme for a pilot corpus of annotated online chats concerning bargaining negotiations in the game The Settlers of Catan. We will use this model and data to analyze how conversations proceed in the absence of strong forms of cooperativity, where agents have diverging motives. Here we concentrate on the description of our annotation scheme for negotiation dialogues, illustrated with our pilot data, and some perspectives for future research on the issue

Journal on Multimodal User Interfaces. 2014;8:97-108.Embodied conversational agents still do not achieve the fluidity and smoothness of natural conversational interaction. One main reason is that current system often respond with big latencies and in inflexible ways. We argue that to overcome these problems, real-time conversational agents need to be based on an underlying architecture that provides two essential features for fast and fluent behavior adaptation: a close bi-directional coordination between input processing and output generation, and incrementality of processing at both stages. We propose an architectural framework for conversational agents [Artificial Social Agent Platform (ASAP)] providing these two ingredients for fluid real-time conversation. The overall architectural concept is described, along with specific means of specifying incremental behavior in BML and technical implementations of different modules. We show how phenomena of fluid real- time conversation, like adapting to user feedback or smooth turn-keeping, can be realized with ASAP and we describe in detail an example real-time interaction with the implemented system

    Evaluating thermotolerant sunflower genotypes with temperature induction response (TIR) technique

    High temperature affects various physiological processes of the plant. Delayed sowing and changing climate both subject the crop to increasing temperatures during the crop growth period. There is a need to take on a technique to screen the wide number of genotypes for high-temperature tolerance. In the present study, a screening protocol was followed based on the principle of “acquired tolerance” in which 47 sunflower seedlings were exposed to sub-lethal heat stress to induce tolerance before subjecting to subsequent lethal stress and the second set were directly exposed to lethal stress. Significant variation was observed for the traits - survival percentage, total seedling length, and seedling weight. Tolerant inbreds were identified using Z distribution and PCA. Results suggested that TIR is a rapid and powerful technique that can be used to screen large number of germplasms to identify thermotolerant lines

    Biochemical Studies on Evaluation of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) Genotypes for Heat Stress

    Crops are facing heat stress because of rapid climate change caused by global warming. We examined these issues in sunflower by exposing the plants growing with mean maximum temperature of 32.2oC (sowing to flowering) and 36.1oC (flowering to harvest) at normal temperature (S1) and 35.3oC (sowing to flowering) and 38.3 oC (flowering to harvest) at high temperatures (S2) by staggered sowings. Antioxidative responses of sunflower were also explored by studying the Superoxide dismutase, Catalase, Peroxidises and Ascorbate peroxidise activities. A significant increase was observed in antioxidant enzyme activities under high temperature stress. The final oil composition proved to be sensitive to the timing of heat stress and reduced (13%) by high temperatures. Some innovative steps should be taken on an emergency basis to prepare plants for such stressful conditions
