    Application of a new photocatalytic nanomaterial obtained by Pulse Laser Ablation for Polychrome Paintings Conservation: a feasibility study

    This works aims to present a preliminary study about the application on painting of TiO2 nanoparticles for self-cleaning and protective purposes. We firstly assessed the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 nanoparticles, obtained by Pulsed Laser Ablation, by the discoloration of dye. After, the colloidal dispersion is applied to painting samples prepared in laboratory, according to old recipes and using the most-used historical binders and pigments, in order to verify the cleaning efficiency by discoloration of the chromatic markers. The spectrophotometric analysis is performed studying the Spectral Reflectance Factor trend and the color coordinates

    Fulvestrant and trastuzumab in patients with luminal HER2-positive advanced breast cancer (ABC): an Italian real-world experience (HERMIONE 9)

    Purpose The most appropriate therapy for HR+/HER2-positive (HER2+) advanced breast cancer (ABC) is a matter of debate. Co-targeting of both receptors represents an attractive strategy to overcome the cross-talk between them. Methods The HERMIONE 9 is an observational retrospective multicentric study which aimed to describe the clinical outcome of patients with HR+/HER2+ABC who received the combination of Fulvestrant (F) and Trastuzumab (T) as part of their routine treatment at 10 Italian Institutions. Results Eighty-seven patients were included. Median age was 63 (range, 35–87) years. The median number of previous treatments was 3 (range, 0–10) and F and T were administered as≥3rd line in 67 patients. Among the 86 evaluable patients, 6 (6.9%) achieved CR, 18 (20.7%) PR, and 44 (50.6%) had SD ≥24 weeks with an overall CBR of 78.2%. At a median follow-up of 33.6 months, mPFS of the entire cohort was 12.9 months (range, 2.47–128.67). No diference was observed in mPFS between patients treated after progression or as maintenance therapy (mPFS 12.9 and 13.9 months in 64 and 23 patients, respectively), neither considering the number of previous treatment lines (≤3 or<3). Conclusion The combination of F and T was active in this cohort at poor prognosis and deserves further investigations possibly in combination with pertuzumab in patients with high ER expression

    Eribulin in male patients with breast cancer: The first report of clinical outcomes

    Background. Evidence on the management and treatment of male breast cancer is scant. We report the analysis of a multicenter Italian series of patients with male breast cancer treated with eribulin. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the use or eribulin in this setting. Patients and Methods. Patients were retrospectively identified in 19 reference centers. All patients received eribulin treatment, according to the standard practice of each center. Data on the identified patients were collected using a standardized form and were then centrally reviewed by two experienced oncologists. Results. A total of 23 patients (median age, 64 yearsrange, 42–80) were considered. The median age at the time of diagnosis of breast cancerwas 57 years (range, 42–74).HER2 status was negative in 14 patients (61%), and 2 patients (9%) had triple-negative disease. The most common metastatic sites were the lung (n 5 1461%) and bone (n 5 1356%). Eribulin was administered for a median of 6 cycles (range, 3–15). All patients reported at least stable diseasetwo complete responses (9%) were documented. Eribulin was well-tolerated, with only four patients (17%) reporting grade 3 adverse events and two (9%) with treatment interruptions because of toxicity. Eight subjects (35%) did not report any adverse event during treatment. For patients with a reported fatal event, the median overall survival from the diagnosis of metastatic disease was 65 months (range, 22–228). Conclusion. Although hampered by all the limitations of any retrospective case series, the results of the present study suggest, for the first time, the use of eribulin as therapy for male breast cancer

    The Role of Scale Adjustment in Color Change Evaluation

    The aim of this research work was to assess the influence of different scale adjustment conditions on both color measurement and color difference quantification and, in particular, to determine the best procedure to follow for a high-reliability protocol. This issue is very important in the Cultural Heritage field and, above all, in color measurement, which is carried out at different times during conservation and restoration campaigns or during archaeological excavations. Color change evaluation, performed by way of spectrophotometric measurements under different scale adjustment procedures on selected samples represented by colored reflectance standards and colored paintings, aimed to obtain results not only on ideal samples (certified standards) but also on real case studies (paintings). The study was conducted by focusing on the coordinates of the CIELAB color space and, in particular, on the calculation of the ΔE*ab quantity.     Bubble Sensors for Temperature Measurements through a Colorimetric Approach

    This paper introduces an innovative sensor utilizing bubbles coated with thermochromic paint, aiming to facilitate temperature measurements in challenging-to-reach locations without the requirement of an external power source. The research conducted is innovative in terms of both methodology and application. The characterization of the thermochromic properties of paints was, in fact, performed using spectroradiometric measurements by selecting a temperature range useful for applications in various fields including preventive conservation. The study encompasses two main objectives: (1) analyzing the color characteristics of thermochromic paint and plastic resin that forms the bubbles, and (2) assessing a temperature sensor comprising a thermochromic paint-coated bubble subjected to temperature variations. The thermochromic paint exhibits reversible color modifications in response to temperature changes, making it an ideal candidate for applications of this nature. The color characterization phase involves measurements using a spectroradiometer to compare the spectral reflectance factor (SRF%) of the colored plastic resin spread on canvas with that of the inflated bubbles. The sensor characterization entails evaluating color changes of the thermochromic paint on the bubble surface with varying temperatures. Experimental results indicate that the combination of a red (R) bubble and blue (B) thermochromic paint produces quantifiable color variations suitable for the proposed applications, whereas the alternative combination under examination, namely a blue bubble and red thermochromic paint, yields less accurate results. Considering that for both thermochromic paints the color change temperature is 35 °C, it is possible to see how, for B bubble with R thermochromic paint, the chromatic coordinates change value: C* = 3.14 ± 0.14 and h = 289.54 ± 11.58 at room temperature, while C* = 2.96 ± 0.12 and h = 304.20 ± 12.17 at 35 °C. The same is true for R bubble with B thermochromic paint where C* = 25.31 ± 1.01 and h* = 285.05 ± 11.40 at room temperature, while C* = 20.87 ± 0.85 and h = 288.37 ± 11.53 at 35 °C. The study demonstrates the potential of the approach and suggests further investigations into reproducibility and expanded color combinations. The results provide a promising basis for future improvements in temperature monitoring with thermochromic bubble sensors

    CT-Dose Measurement of the Spinal Cord Region Using XR-QA2 Radiochromic Films and TLD 100H Dosimeters

    The European Directive 2013/59/Euratom focuses on the radiation protection and patient dosimetry. In particular, the dose absorbed by serial organs such as the spinal cord due to diagnostic exams plays a crucial role in the appraisal of medical exposure. In this work, a comparison between dose measurements performed with GafchromicTM XR-QA2 and TLD 100H is presented. The dosimeters—after a calibration procedure through an X-ray tube—were placed within the thorax region of an anthropomorphic phantom corresponding to the spinal cord area exposed to a thoracic CT procedure. The mean-dose value was measured with GafchromicTM first, and it was then compared to the dose value obtained with TLDs, resulting in a good agreement between the two dosimetric methodologies. Additionally, the results showed that—due to the usage of the automatic exposure control (EC) system—the discrepancy between the two methods is proportional to the current output of the CT system

    Characterization of phenolic pellets for ESR dosimetry in photon beam radiotherapy

    This work deals with the dosimetric features of a particular phenolic compound (IRGANOX 1076\uae) for dosimetry of clinical photon beams by using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. After the optimization of the ESR readout parameters (namely modulation amplitude and microwave power) to maximise the signal without excessive spectrum distortions, basic dosimetric properties of laboratory-made phenolic dosimeters in pellet form, such as reproducibility, dose\u2013response, sensitivity, linearity and dose rate dependence were investigated. The dosimeters were tested by measuring the depth dose profile of a 6 MV photon beam. A satisfactory intra-batch reproducibility of the ESR signal of the manufactured dosimeters was obtained. The ESR signal proved to increase linearly with increasing dose in the investigated dose range 1\u201313 Gy. The presence of an intrinsic background signal limits the minimum detectable dose to a value of approximately 0.6 Gy. Reliable and accurate assessment of the dose was achieved, independently of the dose rate. Such characteristics, together with the fact that IRGANOX 1076\uae is almost tissue-equivalent, and the stability of the ESR signal, make these dosimeters promising materials for ESR dosimetric applications in radiotherapy

    Phenol compounds as new materials for Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) dosimetry in clinical photon and electron beams

    In the last decades several research laboratories have shown an increasing interest aimed at extending the applicability of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) dosimetry to radiotherapy with different types of radiation beams. ESR is a spectroscopic method for investigating the structure and dynamics of such paramagnetic species. Free radicals are known to be produced when a compound is irradiated with ionizing radiations. The concentration of radiation-induced free radicals is proportional to the energy released inside in the medium and this allows for dosimetric measurements through ESR technique which able to quantitatively determine the radical concentration.The use of alanine as a dosimetric material gave the possibility to apply ESR spectroscopy for high-dose standardization and dose control in radiation processing. The ESR dosimetric method has many advantages such as simple and rapid dose evaluation, the readout procedure is non-destructive, linear response of many organic and inorganic compounds. ESR detectors show a behavior that suggest possible applications for various kinds of beams used for radiation therapy. Nowadays, the most widely used organic compound as a dosimeter is the alanine. However, many researches are in progress with the aim at improving sensitivity of ESR dosimetry for doses much smaller than 1 Gy. More sensitive materials than alanine are needed to make the ESR dosimeter competitive with other dosimetry systems. Our research group has started an investigation of the ESR response of some phenols compounds for possible ESR dosimetric applications suitable features, such as high efficiency of radiation-matter energy transfer and radical stability at room temperature. Phenols are compounds possessing a benzene ring attached to a OH group. After irradiation the final product is a stable phenoxy radical. The stability of such radical can be improved by adding other alkyl chains which can be attached to the benzene ring. In particular, the phenol octadecyl-3-(3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionate gave interesting results. Moreover, its high molecular weight, the low volatility and the compatibility with the dosimeter binding material (wax) are advantages with respect to lower molecular weight phenols. In this work we report the ESR investigation of phenols exposed to clinical photon and electron beams. The dosimetric features of these ESR dosimeters (dependence on microwave power and modulation amplitude, their response after gamma and electron irradiations, dependence on beam type and energy, the detection limits for both beam typologies, signal stability after irradiation) were investigated and the results are reported

    Minilaparoscopic Versus Single-Port Total Hysterectomy: A Randomized Trial

    STUDY OBJECTIVE: To compare perioperative outcomes and postoperative pain of minilaparoscopic (M-LPS) and laparoendoscopic single-site total hysterectomy (LESS). DESIGN: Prospectively randomized study (Canadian Task Force classification II-2). SETTING: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Rome. PATIENTS: A total of 86 patients underwent total hysterectomy. Seventy-one met the inclusion criteria and were included in this study. Three of them refused randomization, 34 were randomly assigned to undergo to single-port hysterectomy and 34 to undergo to minilaparoscopy. INTERVENTIONS: The operative technique is the same in the 2 groups with the exception of videolaparoscopy, port type, and some specific instruments. All surgical procedures were performed with an intrauterine manipulator. Single-port hysterectomy was performed through a multichannel single trocar inserted in the umbilicus. Minilaparoscopic hysterectomy was performed through one optical transumbilical 5-mm trocar and three 3-mm suprapubic ancillary ports. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Sixty-eight patients met the inclusion criteria and were enrolled in the study. The baseline characteristics of the 2 groups were comparable. Median operative time was longer in LESS with respect to M-LPS (120 minutes vs 90 minutes; p = .038). There were no differences between the 2 groups for median estimated blood loss, ileus, and postoperative stay. Additional 5-mm port insertion was needed in 1 case (2.9%) in the M-LPS group and in 2 cases (5.9%) in the LESS group, respectively (p = .311). No patient had development of intraoperative or early postoperative complications. Patients in the M-LPS group experienced a minor pain at each evaluation, compared with patients who underwent LESS. The rescue analgesic requirement was similar in the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic hysterectomy can be safely performed by M-LPS and LESS. M-LPS is associated with significantly lower operative time and less postoperative pain than LESS. Advantages of M-LPS hysterectomy than LESS have no noteworthy impact on the patients' early postoperative management. The decision on the best access to the hysterectomy might take into account the surgeon's skill and feeling with the different possible approaches
