    Noise radiated from a periodically stiffened cylindrical shell excited by a turbulent boundary layer

    © 2019 Elsevier Ltd This work proposes a semi-analytical method to model the vibroacoustic behavior of submerged cylindrical shells periodically stiffened by axisymmetric frames and excited by a homogeneous and fully developed turbulent boundary layer (TBL). The process requires the computation of the TBL wall-pressure cross spectral density function and the sensitivity functions for stiffened cylindrical shells. The former is deduced from an existent TBL model and the latter are derived from a wavenumber-point reciprocity principle and a spectral formulation of the problem. The stiffeners' dynamic behavior is introduced in the formulation through circumferential admittances that are computed by a standard finite element code using shell elements. Four degrees of freedom are taken into account for the coupling between the shell and the stiffeners: three translation directions and one tangential rotation. To investigate the effect of the stiffeners on the radiated noise, two case studies are considered. The first one examines a fluid-loaded cylindrical shell with regularly spaced simple supports. The influence of Bloch-Floquet waves and the support spacing on the noise radiation are highlighted. The second case study inspects the fluid-loaded cylindrical shell with two different periodic ring stiffeners, namely stiffeners with T-shaped and I-shaped cross-sections.     Does Language Dominance Affect Cognitive Performance In Bilinguals? Lifespan Evidence From Preschoolers Through Older Adults On Card Sorting, Simon, And Metalinguistic Tasks

    This study explores the extent to which a bilingual advantage can be observed for three tasks in an established population of fully fluent bilinguals from childhood through adulthood. Welsh-English simultaneous and early sequential bilinguals, as well as English monolinguals, aged 3 years through older adults, were tested on three sets of cognitive and executive function tasks. Bilinguals were Welsh-dominant, balanced, or English-dominant, with only Welsh, Welsh and English, or only English at home. Card sorting, Simon, and a metalinguistic judgment task (650, 557, and 354 participants, respectively) reveal little support for a bilingual advantage, either in relation to control or globally. Primarily there is no difference in performance across groups, but there is occasionally better performance by monolinguals or persons dominant in the language being tested, and in one case-in one condition and in one age group-lower performance by the monolinguals. The lack of evidence for a bilingual advantage in these simultaneous and early sequential bilinguals suggests the need for much closer scrutiny of what type of bilingual might demonstrate the reported effects, under what conditions, and why.published_or_final_versio

    The Antioxidant Potential of the Mediterranean Diet in Patients at High Cardiovascular Risk: An In-Depth Review of the PREDIMED

    Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading global cause of death. Diet is known to be important in the prevention of CVD. The PREDIMED trial tested a relatively low-fat diet versus a high-fat Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) for the primary prevention of CVD. The resulting reduction of the CV composite outcome resulted in a paradigm shift in CV nutrition. Though many dietary factors likely contributed to this effect, this review focuses on the influence of the MedDiet on endogenous antioxidant systems and the effect of dietary polyphenols. Subgroup analysis of the PREDIMED trial revealed increased endogenous antioxidant and decreased pro-oxidant activity in the MedDiet groups. Moreover, higher polyphenol intake was associated with lower incidence of the primary outcome, overall mortality, blood pressure, inflammatory biomarkers, onset of new-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and obesity. This suggests that polyphenols likely contributed to the lower incidence of the primary event in the MedDiet groups. In this article, we summarize the potential benefits of polyphenols found in the MedDiet, specifically the PREDIMED cohort. We also discuss the need for further research to confirm and expand the findings of the PREDIMED in a non-Mediterranean population and to determine the exact mechanisms of action of polyphenols

    Towards on line monitoring the evolution of the myocardium infarction scar with an implantable electrical impedance spectrum monitoring system.

    The human heart tissue has a limited capacity for regeneration. Tissue and cellular therapies based on the use of stem cells may be useful alternatives to limit the size of myocardial infarction. In this paper, the preliminary results from an experimental campaign for on-line monitoring of myocardium scar infarction are presented. This study has been carried out under a research project that has as main objective the development and application of a bioactive patch implant for regeneration of myocardial infarction. Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) has been chosen as a tissue state monitoring technique. What is presented in this communication is the first results of an implantable EIS measurement system which has been implanted in a subset of the animals corresponding to the control group, along one month. In all the animals, the myocardial infarction was induced by the ligation of the first circumflex marginal artery. In the animal group presented,the bioactive patch scaffold and the electrodes were implanted without the stem cells load. The scaffold is a piece of decellularized human pericardium, lyophilized and rehydrated with hydrogel RAD16-I. Nanogold particles were also placed near the electrodes to improve the electrode area conductivity. The results presented correspond to the subset of animals (n = 5), which had implanted the bioimpedance system monitoring the electrical impedance spectrum in vivo during 1 month. Two electrodes were connected to the bioactive patch implant. A total of 14 logarithmically spaced frequencies were measured every 5 minutes, from 100 Hz to 200 kHz. Results show a convergence of low-frequency and high frequency impedance magnitudes along the measurement period, which is coherent with the scar formation.Postprint (published version

    The Higgs Boson Production Cross Section as a Precision Observable?

    We investigate what can be learned at a linear collider about the sector of electroweak symmetry breaking from a precise measurement of the Higgs boson production cross section through the process e+e- -> hZ. We focus on deviations from the Standard Model arising in its minimal supersymmetric extension. The analysis is performed within two realistic future scenarios, taking into account all prospective experimental errors on supersymmetric particle masses as well as uncertainties from unknown higher order corrections. We find that information on tan beta and M_A could be obtained from a cross section measurement with a precision of 0.5 - 1 %. Alternatively, information could be obtained on the gaugino mass parameters M_2 and mu if they are relatively small, M_2, mu approximately 200 GeV.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures.     Loop effects and non-decoupling property of SUSY QCD in gb→tH−g b\to tH^{-}

    One-loop SUSY QCD radiative correction to gb→tH−gb \to tH^{-} cross section is calculated in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We found that SUSY QCD is non-decoupling if the gluino mass and the parameter ÎŒ\mu, AtA_t or AbA_b are at the same order and get large. The non-decoupling contribution can be enhanced by large tan⁥ÎČ\tan\beta and therefore large corrections to the hadronic production rates at the Tevatron and LHC are expected in the large tan⁥ÎČ\tan\beta limit. The fundamental reason for such non-decoupling behavior is found to be some couplings in the loops being proportional to SUSY mass parameters.Comment: 15 pages, 5 PS figures.     SUSY-QCD decoupling properties in H+ -> t \bar b decay

    The SUSY-QCD radiative corrections to the \Gamma (H+ -> t \bar b) partial decay width are analyzed within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model at the one-loop level, {\mathcal O}(\alpha_s), and in the decoupling limit. We present the analytical expressions of these corrections in the large SUSY masses limit and study the decoupling behaviour of these corrections in various limiting cases. We find that if the SUSY mass parameters are large and of the same order, the one loop SUSY-QCD corrections {\it do not decouple}. The non-decoupling contribution is enhanced by \tan \beta and therefore large corrections are expected in the large \tan \beta limit. In contrast, we also find that the SUSY-QCD corrections decouple if the masses of either the squarks or the gluinos are separately taken large.Comment: LaTeX, 33 pages, 7 figure included.     SUSY-electroweak one-loop contributions to Flavour-Changing Higgs-Boson Decays

    The SUSY-EW one-loop quantum contributions to flavour-changing MSSM Higgs-boson decays into bsˉb \bar s and sbˉs \bar b are computed and discussed. We use the full diagrammatic approach that is valid for all tan⁥ÎČ\tan \beta values and do not rely on the mass-insertion approximation for the characteristic flavour-changing parameter. We analyze in full detail the dependence of these flavour-changing partial widths on all the relevant MSSM parameters and also study the non-decoupling behaviour of these widths with the SUSY mass parameters. We find that these contributions are sizable as compared to the SM ones, and together with the SUSY-QCD contributions they can be very efficient as an indirect method in the future search for Supersymmetry.Comment: LaTeX, 25 pages, 12 figures.     Flavour Changing Neutral Higgs Boson Decays from Squark - Gluino Loops

    We study the flavour changing neutral Higgs boson decays that can be induced from genuine supersymmetric particles at the one-loop level and within the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We consider all the possible flavour changing decay channels of the three neutral Higgs bosons into second and third generation quarks, and focus on the Supersymmetric-QCD corrections from squark-gluino loops which are expected to provide the dominant contributions. We assume here the more general hypothesis for flavour mixing, where there is misalignment between the quark and squark sectors, leading to a flavour non-diagonal squark mass matrix. The form factors involved, and the corresponding Higgs partial decay widths and branching ratios, are computed both analytically and numerically, and their behaviour with the parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and with the squark mass mixing are analyzed in full detail. The large rates found, are explained in terms of the non-decoupling behaviour of these squark-gluino loop corrections in the scenario with very large supersymmetric mass parameters.
