A Critical Assessment of Geographic Clusters of Breast and Lung Cancer Incidences among Residents Living near the Tittabawassee and Saginaw Rivers, Michigan, USA
Objectives. To assess previously determined geographic clusters of breast and lung cancer incidences among residents living near the Tittabawassee and Saginaw Rivers, Michigan, using a new set of environmental factors. Materials and Methods. Breast and lung cancer data were acquired from the Michigan Department of Community Health, along with point source pollution data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The datasets were used to determine whether there is a spatial association between disease risk and environmental contamination. GIS and spatial techniques were combined with statistical analysis to investigate local risk of breast and lung cancer.
Results and Conclusion. The study suggests that neighborhoods in close proximity to the river were associated with a high risk of breast cancer, while increased risk of lung cancer was detected among neighborhoods in close proximity to point source pollution and major highways. Statistically significant (P ≤ .001) clusters of cancer incidences were observed among residents living near the rivers. These findings are useful to researchers and governmental agencies for risk assessment, regulation, and control of environmental contamination in the floodplains
Finite-Temperature Collective Dynamics of a Fermi Gas in the BEC-BCS Crossover
We report on experimental studies on the collective behavior of a strongly
interacting Fermi gas with tunable interactions and variable temperature. A
scissors mode excitation in an elliptical trap is used to characterize the
dynamics of the quantum gas in terms of hydrodynamic or near-collisionless
behavior. We obtain a crossover phase diagram for collisional properties,
showing a large region where a non-superfluid strongly interacting gas shows
hydrodynamic behavior. In a narrow interaction regime on the BCS side of the
crossover, we find a novel temperature-dependent damping peak, suggesting a
relation to the superfluid phase transition
Collective oscillations of a Fermi gas in the unitarity limit: Temperature effects and the role of pair correlations
We present detailed measurements of the frequency and damping of three
different collective modes in an ultracold trapped Fermi gas of Li atoms
with resonantly tuned interactions. The measurements are carried out over a
wide range of temperatures. We focus on the unitarity limit, where the
scattering length is much greater than all other relevant length scales. The
results are compared to theoretical calculations that take into account Pauli
blocking and pair correlations in the normal state above the critical
temperature for superfluidity. We show that these two effects nearly compensate
each other and the behavior of the gas is close to the one of a classical gas.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Desiring Dual Language Bilingual Education: One Community’s Perspectives on Past and Future Directions for Bilingual Learners
Perceptions and beliefs about past, present, and future bilingual educational programs were gathered from key members of a bilingual community, including teachers, parents, and educational administrators. Participants’ responses were analyzed and three overarching themes emerged. Current perceptions of bilingual education programs are strongly influenced by: (a) sociohistorical and political factors, (b) the effectiveness of instructional techniques; and (c) beliefs about bilingualism in general. Implications of these results are described with a focus on how they can inform policies and practices for bilingual learners
Admixture in Latin America
Latin Americans arguably represent the largest recently admixed populations in the world. This reflects a history of massive settlement by immigrants (mostly Europeans and Africans) and their variable admixture with Natives, starting in 1492. This process resulted in the population of Latin America showing an extensive genetic and phenotypic diversity. Here we review how genetic analyses are being applied to examine the demographic history of this population, including patterns of mating, population structure and ancestry. The admixture history of Latin America, and the resulting extensive diversity of the region, represents a natural experiment offering an advantageous setting for genetic association studies. We review how recent analyses in Latin Americans are contributing to elucidating the genetic architecture of human complex traits
Yard-Sale exchange on networks: Wealth sharing and wealth appropriation
Yard-Sale (YS) is a stochastic multiplicative wealth-exchange model with two
phases: a stable one where wealth is shared, and an unstable one where wealth
condenses onto one agent. YS is here studied numerically on 1d rings, 2d square
lattices, and random graphs with variable average coordination, comparing its
properties with those in mean field (MF). Equilibrium properties in the stable
phase are almost unaffected by the introduction of a network. Measurement of
decorrelation times in the stable phase allow us to determine the critical
interface with very good precision, and it turns out to be the same, for all
networks analyzed, as the one that can be analytically derived in MF. In the
unstable phase, on the other hand, dynamical as well as asymptotic properties
are strongly network-dependent. Wealth no longer condenses on a single agent,
as in MF, but onto an extensive set of agents, the properties of which depend
on the network. Connections with previous studies of coalescence of immobile
reactants are discussed, and their analytic predictions are successfully

Greater Expectations?
Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are key tools in the construction of lightweight authentication and key exchange protocols. So far, all existing PUF-based authentication protocols follow the same paradigm: A resource-constrained prover, holding a PUF, wants to authenticate to a resource-rich verifier, who has access to a database of pre-measured PUF challenge-response pairs (CRPs). In this paper we consider application scenarios where all previous PUF-based authentication schemes fail to work: The verifier is resource-constrained (and holds a PUF), while the prover is resource-rich (and holds a CRP-database). We construct the first and efficient PUF-based authentication protocol for this setting, which we call converse PUF-based authentication. We provide an extensive security analysis against passive adversaries, show that a minor modification also allows for authenticated key exchange and propose a concrete instantiation using controlled Arbiter PUFs
Pairing-gap, pseudo-gap, and no-gap phases in the radio-frequency spectra of a trapped unitary 6Li gas
Radio frequency spectra of a trapped unitary 6Li gas are reported and
analyzed in terms of a theoretical approach that includes both final-state and
trap effects. Final-state effects play a crucial role in evidencing two main
peaks both above and below the critical temperature Tc as being associated with
two distinct phases that reside in different trap regions. These are the
pairing-gap and pseudo-gap phases below Tc, which evolve into the pseudo-gap
and no-gap phases above Tc. In this way, a long standing puzzle about the

Moving from a Product-Based Economy to a Service-Based Economy for a More Sustainable Future
Traditionally, economic growth and prosperity have been linked with the availability, production and distribution of tangible goods as well as the ability of consumers to acquire such goods. Early evidence regarding this connection dates back to Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations (1776), in which any activity not resulting in the production of a tangible good is characterized as unproductive of any value." Since then, this coupling of economic value and material production has been prevalent in both developed and developing economies throughout the world. One unintended consequence of this coupling has been the exponential increase in the amount of solid waste being generated. The reason is that any production and consumption of material goods eventually generates the equivalent amount of (or even more) waste. Exacerbating this problem is the fact that, with today's manufacturing and supply chain management technologies, it has become cheaper to dispose and replace most products rather than to repair and reuse them. This has given rise to what some call a disposable society." To put things in perspective: In 2012 households in the U.K. generated approximately 22 thousand tons of waste, which amounted to 411 kg of waste generated per person (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, 2015). During the same time period, households in the U.S. generated 251 million tons of waste, which is equivalent to a person generating approximately 2 kg of waste every day (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2012). Out of these 251 million tons of total waste generated, approximately 20% of the discarded items were categorized as durable goods. The disposal of durable goods is particularly worrisome because they are typically produced using material from non- renewable resources such as iron, minerals, and petroleum-based raw materials
