    SED fitting with MCMC: methodology and application to large galaxy surveys

    We present GalMC (Acquaviva et al 2011), our publicly available Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm for SED fitting, show the results obtained for a stacked sample of Lyman Alpha Emitting galaxies at z ~ 3, and discuss the dependence of the inferred SED parameters on the assumptions made in modeling the stellar populations. We also introduce SpeedyMC, a version of GalMC based on interpolation of pre-computed template libraries. While the flexibility and number of SED fitting parameters is reduced with respect to GalMC, the average running time decreases by a factor of 20,000, enabling SED fitting of each galaxy in about one second on a 2.2GHz MacBook Pro laptop, and making SpeedyMC the ideal instrument to analyze data from large photometric galaxy surveys.Comment: Proceedings of the IAU Symposium 284, "The Spectral Energy Distribution of galaxies"; typos fixed; refs adde

    Magellan/MMIRS near-infrared multi-object spectroscopy of nebular emission from star forming galaxies at 2<z<3

    To investigate the ingredients, which allow star-forming galaxies to present Lyalpha line in emission, we studied the kinematics and gas phase metallicity (Z) of the interstellar medium. We used multi-object NIR spectroscopy with Magellan/MMIRS to study nebular emission from z=2-3 star-forming galaxies discovered in 3 MUSYC fields. We detected emission lines from four active galactic nuclei and 13 high-z star-forming galaxies, including Halpha lines down to a flux of 4.E-17 erg/sec/cm^2. This yielded 7 new redshifts. The most common emission line detected is [OIII]5007, which is sensitive to Z. We were able to measure Z for 2 galaxies and to set upper(lower) limits for another 2(2). The Z values are consistent with 0.3<Z/Zsun<1.2. Comparing the Lyalpha central wavelength with the systemic redshift, we find Delta_v(Lyalpha-[OIII])=70-270 km/sec. High-redshift star-forming galaxies, Lyalpha emitting (LAE) galaxies, and Halpha emitters appear to be located in the low mass, high star-formation rate (SFR) region of the SFR versus stellar mass diagram, confirming that they are experiencing burst episodes of star formation, which are building up their stellar mass. Their Zs are consistent with the relation found for z<2.2 galaxies in the Z versus stellar mass plane. The measured Delta_v(Lyalpha-[OIII]) values imply that outflows of material, driven by star formation, could be present in the z=2-3 LAEs of our sample. Comparing with the literature, we note that galaxies with lower Z than ours are also characterized by similar Delta_v(Lyalpha-[OIII]) velocity offsets. Strong [OIII] is detected in many Lyalpha emitters. Therefore, we propose the Lyalpha/[OIII] flux ratio as a tool for the study of high-z galaxies; while influenced by Z, ionization, and Lyalpha radiative transfer in the ISM, it may be possible to calibrate this ratio to primarily trace one of these effects.Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, 6 table

    A search for Population III galaxies in CLASH. I. Singly-imaged candidates at high redshift

    Population III galaxies are predicted to exist at high redshifts and may be rendered sufficiently bright for detection with current telescopes when gravitationally lensed by a foreground galaxy cluster. Population III galaxies that exhibit strong Lya emission should furthermore be identifiable from broadband photometry because of their unusual colors. Here, we report on a search for such objects at z > 6 in the imaging data from the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH), covering 25 galaxy clusters in 16 filters. Our selection algorithm returns five singly-imaged candidates with Lya-like color signatures, for which ground-based spectroscopy with current 8-10 m class telescopes should be able to test the predicted strength of the Lya line. None of these five objects have been included in previous CLASH compilations of high-redshift galaxy candidates. However, when large grids of spectral synthesis models are applied to the study of these objects, we find that only two of these candidates are significantly better fitted by Population III models than by more mundane, low-metallicity stellar populations.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted by Ap

    The following research work had as main objective: "To develop the importance of school inclusion in the process of teaching and learning in the third level of the Education Unit" Jorge Icaza "city of Latacunga," whose problem was the lack of educational inclusion, which affects teaching and learning in this educational establishment. the theoretical foundation and fundamental categories where aspects such as the educational community, school integration, inclusive education, school education, development of inductive schools and the teaching-learning, rinsed developed for which was used the descriptive methodology to determine whether the educational inclusion applies. The analysis and interpretation of the results of the interview to the director and the surveys to the teachers, students and parents were carried out, where she was known about the application of the educational inclusion in this establishment. The contribution of this thesis is in the proposal that is the development of a workshop to promote school inclusion in the educational unit "Jorge Icaza" of the city of Latacunga that allows the improvement of teaching learning.El siguiente trabajo de investigación tuvo como objetivo principal: “Desarrollar la importancia que tiene la inclusión escolar en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje en el tercer nivel de la Unidad Educativa “Jorge Icaza” de la ciudad de Latacunga”, cuyo problema consistió en el desconocimiento de la inclusión educativa, lo que incide en la enseñanza-aprendizaje en este establecimiento educativo. Se desarrolló la fundamentación teórica y las categorías fundamentales en donde se aclararon aspectos como la comunidad educativa, la integración escolar, la inclusión educativa, la educación escolar, desarrollo de las escuelas inclusivas y el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje, para lo cual se utilizó la metodología descriptiva para conocer si se aplica la inclusión educativa. Se realizó el análisis y la interpretación de los resultados de la entrevista a la directora y las encuestas a los docentes, estudiantes y padres de familia, donde se conoció sobre la aplicación de la inclusión educativa en este establecimiento.     Evolution in the Continuum Morphological Properties of Ly alpha-Emitting Galaxies from Z=3.1 to Z=2.1

    We present a rest-frame ultraviolet morphological analysis of 108 z = 2.1 Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDF-S) and compare it to a similar sample of 171 LAEs at z = 3.1 . Using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images taken as part of the Galaxy Evolution From Morphology and SEDs survey, Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey, and Hubble Ultradeep Field surveys, we measure the size and photometric component distributions, where photo- metric components are defined as distinct clumps of UV-continuum emission. At both redshifts, the majority of LAEs have observed half-light radii < 2 kpc, but the median half-light radius rises from 0.97 kpc at z = 3.1 to 1.41 kpc at z = 2.1. A similar evolution is seen in the sizes of individual rest-UV components, but there is no evidence for evolution in the number of mUlti-component systems. In the z = 2.1 LAE sample, we see clear correlations between the LAE size and other physical properties derived from its SED. LAEs are found to be larger for galaxies with larger stellar mass, larger star formation rate, and larger dust obscuration, but there is no evidence for a trend between equivalent width and half-light radius at either redshift. The presence of these correlations suggests that a wide range of objects are being selected by LAE surveys at that redshift, including a significant fraction of objects for which a massive and moderately extended population of old stars underlies the young starburst giving rise to the Lya emission

    Inferences on the Timeline of Reionization at z~8 From the KMOS Lens-Amplified Spectroscopic Survey

    Detections and non-detections of Lyman alpha (Lyα\alpha) emission from z>6z>6 galaxies (<1<1 Gyr after the Big Bang) can be used to measure the timeline of cosmic reionization. Of key interest to measuring reionization's mid-stages, but also increasing observational challenge, are observations at z > 7, where Lyα\alpha redshifts to near infra-red wavelengths. Here we present a search for z > 7.2 Lyα\alpha emission in 53 intrinsically faint Lyman Break Galaxy candidates, gravitationally lensed by massive galaxy clusters, in the KMOS Lens-Amplified Spectroscopic Survey (KLASS). With integration times of ~7-10 hours, we detect no Lyα\alpha emission with S/N>5 in our sample. We determine our observations to be 80% complete for 5σ\sigma spatially and spectrally unresolved emission lines with integrated line flux >5.7×1018>5.7\times10^{-18} erg s1^{-1} cm2^{-2}. We define a photometrically selected sub-sample of 29 targets at z=7.9±0.6z=7.9\pm0.6, with a median 5σ\sigma Lyα\alpha EW limit of 58A. We perform a Bayesian inference of the average intergalactic medium (IGM) neutral hydrogen fraction using their spectra. Our inference accounts for the wavelength sensitivity and incomplete redshift coverage of our observations, and the photometric redshift probability distribution of each target. These observations, combined with samples from the literature, enable us to place a lower limit on the average IGM neutral hydrogen fraction of >0.76  (68%),  >0.46  (95%)> 0.76 \; (68\%), \; > 0.46 \; (95\%) at z ~ 8, providing further evidence of rapid reionization at z~6-8. We show that this is consistent with reionization history models extending the galaxy luminosity function to MUV12M_\textrm{UV} \lesssim -12, with low ionizing photon escape fractions, fesc15%f_\textrm{esc} \lesssim 15\%.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    MIPS 24 μm observations of the hubble deep field south: probing the IR-radio correlation of galaxies at z > 1

    We present MIPS 24 μm observations of the Hubble Deep Field South taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The resulting image is 254 arcmin^2 in size and has a sensitivity ranging between ~12 and ~30 μJy rms, with a median sensitivity of ~20 μJy rms. A total of 495 sources have been cataloged with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 5σ. The source catalog is presented as well as source counts which have been corrected for completeness and flux boosting. The IR sources are then combined with MUSYC optical/NIR and ATHDFS radio observations to obtain redshifts and radio flux densities of the sample.We use the IR/radio flux density ratio (q_(24)) to explore the IR–radio correlation for this IR sample and find q_(24) = 0.71 ± 0.31 for sources detected in both IR and radio. The results are extended by stacking IR sources not detected in the radio observations and we derive an average q_(24) for redshift bins between 0 1) sources have an average q_(24) ratio which is better fit by local LIRG SEDs rather than local ULIRG SEDs, indicating that high-redshift ULIRGs differ in their IR/radio properties. So, ULIRGs at high-redshift have SEDs different from those found locally. Infrared-faint radio sources are examined, and while nine radio sources do not have an MIPS detection and are therefore radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), only one radio source has an extreme IRAC 3.6μm to radio flux density ratio indicating it is a radio-loud AGN at z > 1
