    Hepatoblastoma in Adult: Review of the Literature

    This study is to review and retrieve data on adult hepatoblastoma (HB) from English literatures in order to gain a better understanding of this disease. We performed Medline, PubMed (from January 1966 to February 2008), and library searches (National Science and Technology Library, Beijing, China, and Wenzhou Medical College Library, from January 1980 to February 2008) using the key words hepatoblastoma in adult, hepatic tumor, hepatoblastoma and adult. Previously reported HB cases were collected and published reviews were also examined. Fifteen cases that met the search criteria were selected. Review of the cases revealed a slight female preponderance. The patients' age ranged from 17 to 82, with median age of 70 for male and 27 for female. The survival time ranged from two weeks to 38 months, and the median survival time was 6 months. In the articles reviewed, HB presented with non-specific initial symptoms, and the diagnosis was not identified until the tumor biopsy after operation or autopsy. Completely surgical resection is still the major treatment for patients with HB and is considered as the only chance of a better prognosis. Due to the rareness of HB in adults, the choice of treatment should be radical resection if possible, and combined with chemotherapy as adopted in children. HB in the adult is extremely rare and the pre-operative diagnosis is often overlooked. The prognosis is so poor that the awareness of the condition in the differential diagnosis in liver tumors could be beneficial

    Uptake and transport of a novel anticancer drug-delivery system: lactosyl-norcantharidin-associated N-trimethyl chitosan nanoparticles across intestinal Caco-2 cell monolayers

    In this paper, novel liver-targeting nanoparticles (NPs), lactosyl-norcantharidin (Lac-NCTD)-associated N-trimethyl chitosan (TMC) NPs (Lac-NCTD-TMC-NPs), were prepared using ionic cross-linkage. The physical properties, particle size, and encapsulation efficiency of the nanoparticles were then investigated. The continuous line of heterogeneous human epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (Caco-2) cell monolayer model was used to study the transport mechanism of Lac-NCTD, and the effects of factors such as time, temperature, pH level, drug concentration, enhancers, and inhibitors. This model was also used to indicate the differences among Lac-NCTD, Lac-NCTD-associated chitosan NPs (Lac-NCTD-CS-NPs), and Lac-NCTD-TMC- NPs in the absorption and transportation of membranes. Drug concentration levels were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography. Active transport and paracellular transport were suggested to be both the primary and secondary mechanisms for Lac-NCTD absorption, respectively. Lac-NCTD uptake and absorption were not controlled by pH levels, but were positively correlated to uptake time, and negatively correlated to temperature. The basolateral to apical apparent permeability coefficients (Papps) were higher than those of the apical to basolateral values. The inhibitor of P-glycoprotein and the multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 significantly enhanced the uptake amount of Lac-NCTD. Compared with Lac-NCTD, Lac-NCTD-CS-NPs and Lac-NCTD-TMC-NPs significantly enhanced drug absorption. Additionally, the latter exhibited stronger action. Lac-NCTD-NPs could penetrate the plasma membrane of Caco-2 cells and translocate into the cytoplasm and even into the nucleus.     Genome‑wide association analyses of leaf rust resistance in cultivated emmer wheat

    Leaf rust, caused by Puccinia triticina (Pt), constantly threatens durum (Triticum turgidum ssp. durum) and bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) production worldwide. A Pt race BBBQD detected in California in 2009 poses a potential threat to durum production in North America because resistance source to this race is rare in durum germplasm. To find new resistance sources, we assessed a panel of 180 cultivated emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccum) accessions for seedling resistance to BBBQD and for adult resistance to a mixture of durum-specific races BBBQJ, CCMSS, and MCDSS in the field, and genotyped the panel using genotype-by-sequencing (GBS) and the 9 K SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) Infinium array. The results showed 24 and nine accessions consistently exhibited seedling and adult resistance, respectively, with two accessions providing resistance at both stages. We performed genome-wide association studies using 46,383 GBS and 4,331 9 K SNP markers and identified 15 quantitative trait loci (QTL) for seedling resistance located mostly on chromosomes 2B and 6B, and 11 QTL for adult resistance on 2B, 3B and 6A. Of these QTL, one might be associated with leaf rust resistance (Lr) gene Lr53, and two with the QTL previously reported in durum or hexaploid wheat. The remaining QTL are potentially associated with new Lr genes. Further linkage analysis and gene cloning are necessary to identify the causal genes underlying these QTL. The emmer accessions with high levels of resistance will be useful for developing mapping populations and adapted durum germplasm and varieties with resistance to the durum-specific races

    Probing two driven double quantum dots strongly coupled to a cavity

    We experimentally and theoretically study a driven hybrid circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) system beyond the dispersive coupling regime. Treating the cavity as part of the driven system, we develop a theory applicable to such strongly coupled and to multi-qubit systems. The fringes measured for a single driven double quantum dot (DQD)-cavity setting and the enlarged splittings of the hybrid Floquet states in the presence of a second DQD are well reproduced with our model. This opens a path to study Floquet states of multi-qubit systems with arbitrarily strong coupling and reveals a new perspective for understanding strongly driven hybrid systems.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    RITA: Boost Autonomous Driving Simulators with Realistic Interactive Traffic Flow

    High-quality traffic flow generation is the core module in building simulators for autonomous driving. However, the majority of available simulators are incapable of replicating traffic patterns that accurately reflect the various features of real-world data while also simulating human-like reactive responses to the tested autopilot driving strategies. Taking one step forward to addressing such a problem, we propose Realistic Interactive TrAffic flow (RITA) as an integrated component of existing driving simulators to provide high-quality traffic flow for the evaluation and optimization of the tested driving strategies. RITA is developed with consideration of three key features, i.e., fidelity, diversity, and controllability, and consists of two core modules called RITABackend and RITAKit. RITABackend is built to support vehicle-wise control and provide traffic generation models from real-world datasets, while RITAKit is developed with easy-to-use interfaces for controllable traffic generation via RITABackend. We demonstrate RITA's capacity to create diversified and high-fidelity traffic simulations in several highly interactive highway scenarios. The experimental findings demonstrate that our produced RITA traffic flows exhibit all three key features, hence enhancing the completeness of driving strategy evaluation. Moreover, we showcase the possibility for further improvement of baseline strategies through online fine-tuning with RITA traffic flows.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 3 table
