Study of the ground and excited states of Lambda and Sigma hyperon production at COSY
COSY with a maximum beam momentum of ~3.65 GeV/c allows the production of
ground state (Lambda and Sigma) and excited hyperons (Lambda(1405), Sigma(1385)
and Lambda(1520)) in elementary NN interactions. The existing data base in this
field is rather poor. A systematic study of the hyperon production at COSY will
result in an improvement of our understanding concerning topics like
hyperon-nucleon interaction, kaon-nucleon interaction, nucleon resonances,
strangeness production mechanism and structure of the Lambda(1405). Precise
data on Lambda and Sigma production have been produced at the COSY-11 and TOF
installation. With the WASA detector at COSY these studies can be continued and
extended to channels including photons in the final state.Comment: Talk given at 2nd Symposium on Threshold Meson Production and p p and

Summary of the COSY-11 Measurements of Hyperon Production
The studies of hyperon production performed at COSY-11 are summarized. The
results of the experiments in the reaction channels pp-->pK+Lambda,
pp-->pK+Sigma0, and pp-->nK+Sigma+ are shown. Excitation functions
fromthreshold up to about 90MeV excess energies have been evaluated with high
precision for the Lambda and Sigma0 production. The Lambdap and Sigma0p final
state interactions were extracted. The Sigma+ production was measured at 13 and
60 MeV excess energies.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, Talk given at Symposium on Meson Physics at

Heavy Hyperon--Antihyperon Production
Based on the experience from the production of anti-Lambda Lambda and
anti-Sigma Sigma pairs at LEAR (experiment PS185) it is suggested to continue
the investigations towards the heavier antihyperon--hyperon pairs anti-Xi Xi
and anti-Omega Omega in view of: (1) the production dynamics of the heavier
antihyperon--hyperon out of the anti-p p annihilation (2) a comparison of the
(3s 3anti-s quark system) anti-Omega Omega to the (3 (anti-s s)) 3 phi meson
production, where both systems have similar masses (3.345 and 3.057,
respectively) and identical valence quark content. A systematic study of the
antihyperon--hyperon production with increasing strangeness content is
interesting for the following reasons: The anti-Omega Omega production is the
creation of two spin 3/2 objects out of the two spin 1/2 anti-p p particles.
Results of the PS185 experiments prove a clear dominance of the spin triplet
anti-s s dissociation. In the Omega anti-Omega the three s-quarks (three anti-s
quarks) are aligned to spin 3/2 each. If the three anti-s s pairs are now all
in spin triplet configurations when created out of the gluonic interaction they
should have spin parity quantum number as 3^- as long as Omega anti-Omega is
created with relative L=0 angular momentum. The comparison of the Omega
anti-Omega baryon pair to the phi phi phi three meson production (where the
three anti-s s quark pairs might not but can be produced without relative
correlation) would provide a unique determination of the intermediate matter
state. Measurements of excitation functions and polarization transfers should
be used to examine these gluon rich anti-p p --> anti-Omega Omega and anti-p p
--> phi phi phi reaction channels. Such experiments should be performed at the
PANDA detector at the FAIR facility of the GSI.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Presented at LEAP05: International Conference on

Extracting the depolarization coefficient D_NN from data measured with a full acceptance detector
The spin transfer from vertically polarized beam protons to Lambda or Sigma
hyperons of the associated strangeness production pp -> pK Lambda (Sigma) is
described with the depolarization coefficient D_NN. As the polarization of the
hyperons is determined by their weak decays, detectors, which have a large
acceptance for the decay particles, are needed. In this paper a formula is
derived, which describes the depolarization coefficient D_NN by count rates of
a 4 pi detector. It is shown, that formulas, which are given in publications
for detectors with restricted acceptance, are specific cases of this formula
for a 4 pi detector.Comment: Accepted for publication by Nuclear Instruments and Methods in

A recoil detector for the measurement of antiproton-proton elastic scattering at angles close to 90
The design and construction of a recoil detector for the measurement of
recoil protons of antiproton-proton elastic scattering at scattering angles
close to 90 are described. The performance of the recoil detector has
been tested in the laboratory with radioactive sources and at COSY with proton
beams by measuring proton-proton elastic scattering. The results of laboratory
tests and commissioning with beam are presented. Excellent energy resolution
and proper working performance of the recoil detector validate the conceptual
design of the KOALA experiment at HESR to provide the cross section data needed
to achieve a precise luminosity determination at the PANDA experiment.Comment: 10 pages, 15 figure
Determination of the eta'-proton scattering length in free space
Taking advantage of both the high mass resolution of the COSY-11 detector and
the high energy resolution of the low-emittance proton-beam of the Cooler
Synchrotron COSY we determine the excitation function for the pp --> pp eta'
reaction close-to-threshold. Combining these data with previous results we
extract the scattering length for the eta'-proton potential in free space to be
Re(a_{p eta'}) = 0+-0.43 fm and Im(a_{p eta'}) = 0.37(+0.40)(-0.16) fm.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let

For the first time a single trapped \pbar is used to measure the \pbar
magnetic moment {\bm\mu}_{\pbar}. The moment {\bm\mu}_{\pbar} = \mu_{\pbar}
{\bm S}/(\hbar/2) is given in terms of its spin and the nuclear
magneton (\muN) by \mu_{\pbar}/\mu_N = -2.792\,845 \pm 0.000\,012. The 4.4
parts per million (ppm) uncertainty is 680 times smaller than previously
realized. Comparing to the proton moment measured using the same method and
trap electrodes gives \mu_{\pbar}/\mu_p = -1.000\,000 \pm 0.000\,005 to 5
ppm, for a proton moment ,
consistent with the prediction of the CPT theorem.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with

Polarization Analysis of p̄ Produced in pA Collisions
A quite simple procedure for the generation of a polarized antiproton beam could be worked out if antiprotons are produced with some polarization. In order to investigate this possibility measurements of the polarization of produced antiprotons have been started at a CERN/PS test beam. The polarization will be determined from the asymmetry of the elastic antiproton scattering at a liquid hydrogen target in the CNI region for which the analyzing power is well known. The data are under analysis and an additional measurement is done in 2018. Details on the experiment and the ongoing data analysis will be given
Determination of the total width of the eta' meson
Taking advantage of both the low-emittance proton-beam of the Cooler
Synchrotron COSY and the high momentum precision of the COSY-11 detector
system, the mass distribution of the eta' meson was measured with a resolution
of 0.33 MeV/c^2 (FWHM), improving the experimental mass resolution by almost an
order of magnitude with respect to previous results. Based on the sample of
more than 2300 reconstructed pp --> pp eta' events the total width of the eta'
meson was determined to be 0.226 +- 0.017(stat.) +- 0.014(syst.) MeV/c^2.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Isospin dependence of the eta prime meson production in nucleon-nucleon collisions
A comparison of the close-to-threshold total cross section for the eta prime
production in pp --> pp eta prime and pn --> pn eta prime reactions constitutes
a tool to investigate the eta prime meson structure and the reaction mechanism
in the channels of isospin I=0 and I=1 and may provide insight into the
flavour-singlet (perhaps also into gluonium) content of the eta prime meson. In
this contribution we present preliminary results of measurement of the
quasi-free production of the eta prime meson in the proton-neutron collisions
conducted using the COSY-11 facility.Comment: Presented at 10th International Workshop on Meson Production,
