On the possibility of measuring at HERA using radiative events
It is shown that a significant measurement of the longitudinal structure
function can be performed at HERA, for and and for x around , using radiative events with hard photon
emission collinear to the incident lepton beam, under the present running
conditions and with an integrated luminosity of 10 . The influence of
experimental conditions is discussed.Comment: 12 pages (6 figures
Our study focuses on implementing and analyzing the first version of a "flipped classroom" hybrid tutoring program, as part of an action research in a first-year university physics course. Guided by the contributions of several fields of literature, we designed the program to improve interactions between peers and with the teacher, and mitigate students' tendency towards passivity during group exercise sessions. Our analysis first focused on the students' perceptions of the program, collected in an open and closed-ended questionnaire. To identify at-risk student profiles in the course, we also constructed statistical models to explore the links between the socio-demographic characteristics and past schooling of first-time enrolled students, their participation in the program, and the grade obtained on the exam. Based on the results, we discuss avenues to be explored in future analyses and adaptations to be made to the second version of the program
Further developments of the gas electron multiplier (GEM)
We describe the development and operation of the Gas Electron Multiplier, a thin insulating foil metal-clad on both sides and perforated by a regular pattern of small holes. The mesh can be incorporat ed in the gas volume of an active detector to provide a first amplification channel for electrons, or used as stand alone. We report on the basic properties of GEMs manufactured with different geometr ies and operated in several gas mixtures as well as on their long-term stability after accumulation of charge equivalent to several years of operation in high luminosity experiments. Optimized GEMs re ach gains close to 10000 at safe operating voltages, permitting the detection of ionizing tracks, without other amplifying elements, on a simple printed circuit board (PCB), opening new possibilities for detector design
The Breaking of Subnuclear Democracy as the Origin of Flavour Mixing
It is shown that the simplest breaking of the subnuclear democracy leads to a
successful description of the mixing between the second and third family. In
the lepton channel the oscillations are expected to
be described by a mixing angle of which might be observed soon
in neutrino experiments.Comment: 9 pages LaTeX, CERN-TH.7236/9
The ROD crate DAQ software framework of the ATLAS data acquisition system
In the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, the ROD Crate DAQ provides a complete software framework to implement data acquisition functionality at the boundary between the detector specific electronics and the common part of the data acquisition system. Based on a plugin mechanism, it allows selecting and using common services (like data output and data monitoring channels) and developing software to control and acquire data from detector specific modules providing the infrastructure for control, monitoring and calibration. Including also event building functionality, the ROD Crate DAQ is intended to be the main data acquisition tool for the first phase of detector commissioning. This paper presents the design, functionality and performance of the ROD Crate DAQ and its usage in the ATLAS data acquisition system and during detector tests
Measurement of the hadronic photon structure function F_{2}^{Îł} at LEP2
The hadronic structure function of the photon F_{2}^{Îł} (x, QÂČ) is measured as a function of Bjorken x and of the photon virtuality QÂČ using deep-inelastic scattering data taken by the OPAL detector at LEP at eâșeâ» centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. Previous OPAL measurements of the x dependence of F_{2}^{Îł} are extended to an average QÂČ of ăQÂČă=780 GeVÂČ using data in the kinematic range 0.15<x<0.98. The QÂČ evolution of F_{2}^{Îł} is studied for 12.1<ăQÂČă<780 GeVÂČ using three ranges of x. As predicted by QCD, the data show positive scaling violations in F_{2}^{Îł} with F_{2}^{Îł} (QÂČ)/α = (0.08±0.02âșâ°Â·â°â”_â.ââ) + (0.13±0.01âșâ°Â·â°Âč_â.ââ) lnQÂČ, where QÂČ is in GeVÂČ, for the central x region 0.10â0.60. Several parameterisations of F_{2}^{Îł} are in qualitative agreement with the measurements whereas the quark-parton model prediction fails to describe the data
Measurement of the charm structure function F_{2,c)^{Îł} of the photon at LEP
The production of charm quarks is studied in deep-inelastic electronâphoton scattering using data recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP at nominal eâșeâ» centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. The charm quarks have been identified by full reconstruction of charged D* mesons using their decays into Dâ°Ï with the Dâ° observed in two decay modes with charged particle final states, KÏ and KÏÏÏ. The cross-section Ï^{D*} for production of charged D* in the reaction eâșeâ»âeâșeâ»D*Χ is measured in a restricted kinematical region using two bins in Bjorken x, 0.00140.1 the perturbative QCD calculation at next-to-leading order agrees perfectly with the measured cross-section. For x<0.1 the measured cross-section is 43.8±14.3±6.3±2.8 pb with a next-to-leading order prediction of 17.0âșÂČ·âč_â.â pb
Measurement of triple gauge boson couplings from WâșWâ» production at LEP energies up to 189 GeV
A measurement of triple gauge boson couplings is presented, based on W-pair data recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP during 1998 at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 183 pbâ»Âč. After combining with our previous measurements at centre-of-mass energies of 161â183 GeV we obtain Îș = 0.97_{-0.16}^{+0.20}, g_{1}^{z} = 0.991_{-0.057}^{+0.060} and λ = -0.110_{-0.055}^{+0.058}, where the errors include both statistical and systematic uncertainties and each coupling is determined by setting the other two couplings to their Standard Model values. These results are consistent with the Standard Model expectations
Measurement of the partial widths of the Z into up- and down-type quarks
Using the entire OPAL LEP1 on-peak Z hadronic decay sample, Z -> qbarq gamma
decays were selected by tagging hadronic final states with isolated photon
candidates in the electromagnetic calorimeter. Combining the measured rates of
Z -> qbarq gamma decays with the total rate of hadronic Z decays permits the
simultaneous determination of the widths of the Z into up- and down-type
quarks. The values obtained, with total errors, were Gamma u = 300 ^{+19}_{-18}
MeV and Gamma d = 381 ^{+12}_{-12} MeV. The results are in good agreement with
the Standard Model expectation.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to Phys. Letts.
Measurement of the Strong Coupling alpha s from Four-Jet Observables in e+e- Annihilation
Data from e+e- annihilation into hadrons at centre-of-mass energies between
91 GeV and 209 GeV collected with the OPAL detector at LEP, are used to study
the four-jet rate as a function of the Durham algorithm resolution parameter
ycut. The four-jet rate is compared to next-to-leading order calculations that
include the resummation of large logarithms. The strong coupling measured from
the four-jet rate is alphas(Mz0)=
0.1182+-0.0003(stat.)+-0.0015(exp.)+-0.0011(had.)+-0.0012(scale)+-0.0013(mass)
in agreement with the world average. Next-to-leading order fits to the
D-parameter and thrust minor event-shape observables are also performed for the
first time. We find consistent results, but with significantly larger
theoretical uncertainties.Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, Submitted to Euro. Phys. J.
