    Reflection high-energy electron diffraction experimental analysis of polycrystalline MgO films with grain size and orientation distributions

    Analysis of biaxial texture of MgO films grown by ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) has been performed using a quantitative reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) based method. MgO biaxial texture is determined by analysis of diffraction spot shapes from single RHEED images, and by measuring the width of RHEED in-plane rocking curves for MgO films grown on amorphous Si3N4 by IBAD using 750 eV Ar+ ions, at 45° incidence angle, and MgO e-beam evaporation. RHEED-based biaxial texture measurement accuracy is verified by comparison with in-plane and out-of-plane orientation distribution measurements made using transmission electron microscopy and x-ray rocking curves. In situ RHEED measurements also enable the analysis of the evolution of the biaxial texture which narrows with increasing film thickness. RHEED-based measurements of IBAD MgO biaxial texture show that the minimum in-plane orientation distribution depends on the out-of-plane orientation distribution, and indicates that the minimum obtainable in-plane orientation on distribution is 2°

    We present results of a self-consistent model of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of starburst galaxies. Two parameters control the IR SED, the mean pressure in the ISM and the destruction timescale of molecular clouds. Adding a simplified AGN spectrum provides mixing lines on IRAS color : color diagrams.     Bringing Salary Transparency to the World: Computing Robust Compensation Insights via LinkedIn Salary

    The recently launched LinkedIn Salary product has been designed with the goal of providing compensation insights to the world's professionals and thereby helping them optimize their earning potential. We describe the overall design and architecture of the statistical modeling system underlying this product. We focus on the unique data mining challenges while designing and implementing the system, and describe the modeling components such as Bayesian hierarchical smoothing that help to compute and present robust compensation insights to users. We report on extensive evaluation with nearly one year of de-identified compensation data collected from over one million LinkedIn users, thereby demonstrating the efficacy of the statistical models.     Incidence of childhood leukaemia was studied among subjects of a vaccine trial in Finland comparing the polysaccharide–diptheria toxoid conjugate and oligosaccharide–CRM197 conjugate Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccine formulations. Eighty cases of childhood leukaemia were detected: 35 among children on the polysaccharide–diptheria toxoid conjugate arm, and 45 among children on the oligosaccharide–CRM197 conjugate arm, which was not statistically significant

    The Physical Conditions in Starbursts Derived from Bayesian Fitting of Mid-IR SEDS: 30 Doradus as a Template

    To understand and interpret the observed Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of starbursts, theoretical or semi-empirical SED models are necessary. Yet, while they are well-founded in theory, independent verification and calibration of these models, including the exploration of possible degeneracies between their parameters, are rarely made. As a consequence, a robust fitting method that leads to unique and reproducible results has been lacking. Here we introduce a novel approach based on Bayesian analysis to fit the Spitzer-IRS spectra of starbursts using the SED models proposed by Groves et al. (2008). We demonstrate its capabilities and verify the agreement between the derived best fit parameters and actual physical conditions by modelling the nearby, well-studied, giant HII region 30 Dor in the LMC. The derived physical parameters, such as cluster mass, cluster age, ISM pressure and covering fraction of photodissociation regions, are representative of the 30 Dor region. The inclusion of the emission lines in the modelling is crucial to break degeneracies. We investigate the limitations and uncertainties by modelling sub-regions, which are dominated by single components, within 30 Dor. A remarkable result for 30 Doradus in particular is a considerable contribution to its mid-infrared spectrum from hot ({\simeq} 300K) dust. The demonstrated success of our approach will allow us to derive the physical conditions in more distant, spatially unresolved starbursts.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures.     In-situ biaxial texture analysis of MgO films during growth on amorphous substrates by ion-beam-assisted deposition

    We used a kinematical electron scattering model to develop a RHEED based method for performing quantitative analysis of mosaic polycrystalline thin film in-plane and out-of-plain grain orientation distributions. RHEED based biaxial texture measurements are compared to x-ray and transmission electron microscopy measurements to establish the validity of the RHEED analysis method. MgO was grown on amorphous Si3N4 by ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) using 750 eV Ar+ ions and MgO e-beam evaporation. The ion/MgO flux ratio was varied between 0.66 and 0.42. In situ RHEED analysis reveals that during nucleation the out-of-plane orientation distribution is very broad (almost random), but narrows very quickly once well-oriented grains reach a critical size. Under optimal conditions a competition between selective sputtering and surface roughening yields a minimum out-of-plane texture at about 100 angstrom, which degrades with increasing film thickness. The narrowest in- plane orientation distribution (5.4 degrees FWHM) was found to be at an ion/MgO flux ratio between 0.55 and 0.51, in good agreement with previous experiments. The systematic offsets between RHEED analysis and x-ray measurements of biaxial texture, coupled with evidence that biaxial texture improves with increasing film thickness, indicates that RHEED is a superior technique for probing surface biaxial texture
