Momentum Analyticity and Finiteness of the 1-Loop Superstring Amplitude
The Type II Superstring amplitude to 1-loop order is given by an integral of
-functions over the moduli space of tori, which diverges for real
momenta. We construct the analytic continuation which renders this amplitude
well defined and finite, and we find the expected poles and cuts in the complex

Some new results concerning the vacuum in Dirac Hole Theory
In Dirac's hole theory the vacuum state is generally believed to be the state
of minimum energy. It will be shown that this is not, in fact, the case and
that there must exist states in hole theory with less energy than the vacuum
state. It will be shown that energy can be extracted from the hole theory

Multi-phonon scattering and Ti-induced hydrogen dynamics in sodium alanate
We use ab initio methods and neutron inelastic scattering (NIS) to study the
structure, energetics, and dynamics of pure and Ti-doped sodium alanate
(NaAlH_4), focusing on the possibility of substitutional Ti doping. The NIS
spectrum is found to exhibit surprisingly strong and sharp two-phonon features.
The calculations reveal that substitutional Ti doping is energetically
possible. Ti prefers to substitute for Na and is a powerful hydrogen attractor
that facilitates multiple Al--H bond breaking. Our results hint at new ways of

Center of mass and relative motion in time dependent density functional theory
It is shown that the exchange-correlation part of the action functional
in time-dependent density functional theory , where
is the time-dependent density, is invariant under the
transformation to an accelerated frame of reference , where is an arbitrary
function of time. This invariance implies that the exchange-correlation
potential in the Kohn-Sham equation transforms in the following manner:
. Some of the
approximate formulas that have been proposed for satisfy this exact
transformation property, others do not. Those which transform in the correct
manner automatically satisfy the ``harmonic potential theorem", i.e. the
separation of the center of mass motion for a system of interacting particles
in the presence of a harmonic external potential. A general method to generate
functionals which possess the correct symmetry is proposed
Noncommutative Vortex Solitons
We consider the noncommutative Abelian-Higgs theory and investigate general
static vortex configurations including recently found exact multi-vortex
solutions. In particular, we prove that the self-dual BPS solutions cease to
exist once the noncommutativity scale exceeds a critical value. We then study
the fluctuation spectra about the static configuration and show that the exact
non BPS solutions are unstable below the critical value. We have identified the
tachyonic degrees as well as massless moduli degrees. We then discuss the
physical meaning of the moduli degrees and construct exact time-dependent
vortex configurations where each vortex moves independently. We finally give
the moduli description of the vortices and show that the matrix nature of

We review recent developments in continuous-wave mid-infrared optical parametric oscillators pumped by fiber lasers. Such devices are potentially valuable spectroscopic sources providing high output powers and rapid, wide-range tuning in the mid-infrared molecular fingerprint region
Constraining recent lead pollution sources in the North Pacific using ice core stable lead isotopes
Trends and sources of lead (Pb) aerosol pollution in the North Pacific rim of North America from 1850 to 2001 are investigated using a high-resolution (subannual to annual) ice core record recovered from Eclipse Icefield (3017 masl; St. Elias Mountains, Canada). Beginning in the early 1940s, increasing Pb concentration at Eclipse Icefield occurs coevally with anthropogenic Pb deposition in central Greenland, suggesting that North American Pb pollution may have been in part or wholly responsible in both regions. Isotopic ratios (208Pb/207Pb and 206Pb/207Pb) from 1970 to 2001 confirm that a portion of the Pb deposited at Eclipse Icefield is anthropogenic, and that it represents a variable mixture of East Asian (Chinese and Japanese) emissions transported eastward across the Pacific Ocean and a North American component resulting from transient meridional atmospheric flow. Based on comparison with source material Pb isotope ratios, Chinese and North American coal combustion have likely been the primary sources of Eclipse Icefield Pb over the 1970â2001 time period. The Eclipse Icefield Pb isotope composition also implies that the North Pacific mid-troposphere is not directly impacted by transpolar atmospheric flow from Europe. Annually averaged Pb concentrations in the Eclipse Icefield ice core record show no long-term trend during 1970â2001; however, increasing 208Pb/207Pb and decreasing 206Pb/207Pb ratios reflect the progressive East Asian industrialization and increase in Asian pollutant outflow. The post-1970 decrease in North American Pb emissions is likely necessary to explain the Eclipse Icefield Pb concentration time series. When compared with low (lichen) and high (Mt. Logan ice core) elevation Pb data, the Eclipse ice core record suggests a gradual increase in pollutant deposition and stronger trans-Pacific Asian contribution with rising elevation in the mountains of the North Pacific rim
Perturbation Theory in Two Dimensional Open String Field Theory
In this paper we develop the covariant string field theory approach to open
2d strings. Upon constructing the vertices, we apply the formalism to calculate
the lowest order contributions to the 4- and 5- point tachyon--tachyon tree
amplitudes. Our results are shown to match the `bulk' amplitude calculations of
Bershadsky and Kutasov. In the present approach the pole structure of the
amplitudes becomes manifest and their origin as coming from the higher string
