We have photographed the Raman spectra for the tetrafluorides of carbon and silicon in both the liquid and gaseous states. The results are presented in Table I together with the Raman frequencies for CCl4 for purposes of comparison

Bose-Einstein Correlations of Three Charged Pions in Hadronic Z^0 Decays

    Get PDF
Bose-Einstein Correlations (BEC) of three identical charged pions were studied in 4 x 10^6 hadronic Z^0 decays recorded with the OPAL detector at LEP. The genuine three-pion correlations, corrected for the Coulomb effect, were separated from the known two-pion correlations by a new subtraction procedure. A significant genuine three-pion BEC enhancement near threshold was observed having an emitter source radius of r_3 = 0.580 +/- 0.004 (stat.) +/- 0.029 (syst.) fm and a strength of \lambda_3 = 0.504 +/- 0.010 (stat.) +/- 0.041 (syst.). The Coulomb correction was found to increase the \lambda_3 value by \~9% and to reduce r_3 by ~6%. The measured \lambda_3 corresponds to a value of 0.707 +/- 0.014 (stat.) +/- 0.078 (syst.) when one takes into account the three-pion sample purity. A relation between the two-pion and the three-pion source parameters is discussed.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures included, accepted by Eur. Phys. J.

The 2009 World Average of αs\alpha_s

    Get PDF
Measurements of αs\alpha_s, the coupling strength of the Strong Interaction between quarks and gluons, are summarised and an updated value of the world average of αs(MZ)\alpha_s (M_Z) is derived. Building up on previous reviews, special emphasis is laid on the most recent determinations of αs\alpha_s. These are obtained from τ\tau-decays, from global fits of electroweak precision data and from measurements of the proton structure function \F_2, which are based on perturbative QCD calculations up to O(αs4)O(\alpha_s^4); from hadronic event shapes and jet production in \epem annihilation, based on O(αs3)O(\alpha_s^3) QCD; from jet production in deep inelastic scattering and from Υ\Upsilon decays, based on O(αs2)O(\alpha_s^2) QCD; and from heavy quarkonia based on unquenched QCD lattice calculations. Applying pragmatic methods to deal with possibly underestimated errors and/or unknown correlations, the world average value of αs(MZ)\alpha_s (M_Z) results in αs(MZ)=0.1184±0.0007\alpha_s (M_Z) = 0.1184 \pm 0.0007. The measured values of αs(Q)\alpha_s (Q), covering energy scales from Q \equiv \mtau = 1.78 GeV to 209 GeV, exactly follow the energy dependence predicted by QCD and therefore significantly test the concept af Asymptotic Freedom.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

Measurement of the Production Rate of Charm Quark Pairs from Gluons in Hadronic Z0Z^{0} Decays

    Get PDF
The rate of secondary charm-quark-pair production has been measured in 4.4 million hadronic Z0 decays collected by OPAL. By selecting events with three jets and tagging charmed hadrons in the gluon jet candidate using leptons and charged D* mesons, the average number of secondary charm-quark pairs per hadronic event is found to be (3.20+-0.21+-0.38)x10-2

A 'snip' in time: what is the best age to circumcise?

    Get PDF

Abstract

Background

Circumcision is a common procedure, but regional and societal attitudes differ on whether there is a need for a male to be circumcised and, if so, at what age. This is an important issue for many parents, but also pediatricians, other doctors, policy makers, public health authorities, medical bodies, and males themselves.

Discussion

We show here that infancy is an optimal time for clinical circumcision because an infant's low mobility facilitates the use of local anesthesia, sutures are not required, healing is quick, cosmetic outcome is usually excellent, costs are minimal, and complications are uncommon. The benefits of infant circumcision include prevention of urinary tract infections (a cause of renal scarring), reduction in risk of inflammatory foreskin conditions such as balanoposthitis, foreskin injuries, phimosis and paraphimosis. When the boy later becomes sexually active he has substantial protection against risk of HIV and other viral sexually transmitted infections such as genital herpes and oncogenic human papillomavirus, as well as penile cancer. The risk of cervical cancer in his female partner(s) is also reduced. Circumcision in adolescence or adulthood may evoke a fear of pain, penile damage or reduced sexual pleasure, even though unfounded. Time off work or school will be needed, cost is much greater, as are risks of complications, healing is slower, and stitches or tissue glue must be used.

Summary

Infant circumcision is safe, simple, convenient and cost-effective. The available evidence strongly supports infancy as the optimal time for circumcision.</p
