    Organic geochemistry of the early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event in Hawsker Bottoms, Yorkshire, England

    A comprehensive organic geochemical investigation of the Hawsker Bottoms outcrop section in Yorkshire, England has provided new insights about environmental conditions leading into and during the Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (T-OAE; ~183 Ma). Rock-Eval and molecular analyses demonstrate that the section is uniformly within the early oil window. Hydrogen index (HI), organic petrography, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) distributions, and tricyclic terpane ratios mark a shift to a lower relative abundance of terrigenous organic matter supplied to the sampling locality during the onset of the T-OAE and across a lithological transition. Unlike other ancient intervals of anoxia and extinction, biomarker indices of planktonic community structure do not display major changes or anomalous values. Depositional environment and redox indicators support a shift towards more reducing conditions in the sediment porewaters and the development of a seasonally stratified water column during the T-OAE. In addition to carotenoid biomarkers for green sulfur bacteria (GSB), we report the first occurrence of okenane, a marker of purple sulfur bacteria (PSB), in marine samples younger than ~1.64 Ga. Based on modern observations, a planktonic source of okenane's precursor, okenone, would require extremely shallow photic zone euxinia (PZE) and a highly restricted depositional environment. However, due to coastal vertical mixing, the lack of planktonic okenone production in modern marine sulfidic environments, and building evidence of okenone production in mat-dwelling Chromatiaceae, we propose a sedimentary source of okenone as an alternative. Lastly, we report the first parallel compound-specific δ[superscript 13]C record in marine- and terrestrial-derived biomarkers across the T-OAE. The δ[superscript 13]C records of short-chain n-alkanes, acyclic isoprenoids, and long-chain n -alkanes all encode negative carbon isotope excursions (CIEs), and together, they support an injection of isotopically light carbon that impacted both the atmospheric and marine carbon reservoirs. To date, molecular δ[superscript 13]C records of the T-OAE display a negative CIE that is smaller in magnitude compared to the bulk organic δ[superscript 13]C excursion. Although multiple mechanisms could explain this observation, our molecular, petrographic, and Rock-Eval data suggest that variable mixing of terrigenous and marine organic matter is an important factor affecting the bulk organic δ[superscript 13]C records of the T-OAE.NASA Astrobiology InstituteExobiology Program (U.S.)National Science Foundation (U.S.).     The role, function and identity of music therapists in the 21st century, including new research and thinking from a UK perspective

    This article examines the identity of music therapy and music therapists, focussing upon the United Kingdom as a case study, but also considering international trends. Milestones in the history of music therapy in postwar United Kingdom and professional development in the 21st century are discussed, drawing upon research and clinical practice. Research outcomes across different specialities indicate that music therapy should be widely available to many populations, such as for people with dementia, autism, stroke and mental health problems and so on. These advancements mean that music therapists need to be clear about their role and identity in both doing the work and communicating about it. The article celebrates advances in research, thinking and provision and emphasis collaboration across multidisciplinary groups through an overview of different identities

    Group Music Therapy for Severe Mental Illness: A Randomized Embedded-experimental Mixed Methods Study

    OBJECTIVE: Music therapy is an innovative approach to support people with severe mental illness (SMI). The aim of the study was to determine whether group music therapy (GMT) positively impacted on quality of life (QoL), social enrichment, self-esteem, spirituality and psychiatric symptoms of participants with SMI and how they experienced the intervention. METHOD: The primary outcome was QoL; secondary measures assessed social enrichment, self-esteem, spirituality and psychiatric symptoms. The 13-week intervention comprised singing familiar songs and composing original songs recorded in a professional studio. Qualitative data were generated from focus group interviews and song lyric analysis. RESULTS: Ninety-nine adults (57 female) were recruited, with an initial cohort (n = 75) randomized to either: weekly GMT followed by standard care (SC) or SC followed by GMT. Crossover occurred after 13 weeks. Measures were conducted at baseline, 13, 26 and 39 weeks. A second cohort (n = 24) could not be randomized and were assigned to GMT followed by SC. Intention-to-treat analysis showed a significant difference between GMT and SC on QoL and spirituality. This was robust to different assumptions about missing data (listwise deletion, last observation carried forward or multiple imputation). Per-protocol analysis suggested greater benefit for those receiving more sessions. Focus group interview and song lyric analyses suggested that GMT was enjoyable; self-esteem was enhanced; participants appreciated therapists and peers; and although challenges were experienced, the programme was recommended to others. CONCLUSION: Group music therapy may enhance QoL and spirituality of persons with SMI

    Terrestrial sources as the primary delivery mechanism of mercury to the oceans across the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (Early Jurassic)

    This study evaluates the utility of sedimentary mercury (Hg) contents as a proxy for fingerprinting ancient massive volcanism, which is often associated with biogeochemical perturbations. Herein we present new Hg geochemical data from anoxic marine basins across the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE; similar to 183 Ma) as a test of the complex Hg cycle. The T-OAE was likely initiated by the main eruptive phase of the Karoo-Ferrar large igneous province, which caused a subsequent cascade of environmental perturbations and resulting mass extinction. At present the leading interpretation of sedimentary Hg anomalies has been volcanogenic outgassing as the primary source. Our study and compilation results suggest, however, that Hg/TOC anomalies were restricted to shallow-water, and/or proximal environments, while deep-water, more distal depositional settings document no significant Hg-related anomalies. Furthermore, asynchronous stratigraphic deviations in Hg enrichments favor terrestrially sourced materials and local redox variability, rather than direct volcanogenic emissions, as a primary control mechanism. Additionally, Hg isotope signatures from our only study site documenting an Hg anomaly are also consistent with a terrestrial Hg origin during the T-OAE. Therefore, our results suggest that Hg anomalies in the geological record need to be re-evaluated as a "smoking gun" proxy that only infers volcanogenic inputs.     Individual Music Therapy for Mental Health Care Clients With Low Therapy Motivation: Multicentre Randomised Controlled Trial

    BACKGROUND: Music therapy (MT) has been shown to be efficacious for mental health care clients with various disorders such as schizophrenia, depression and substance abuse. Referral to MT in clinical practice is often based on other factors than diagnosis. We aimed to examine the effectiveness of resource-oriented MT for mental health care clients with low motivation for other therapies. METHOD: This was a pragmatic parallel trial. In specialised centres in Norway, Austria and Australia, 144 adults with non-organic mental disorders and low therapy motivation were randomised to 3 months of biweekly individual, resource-oriented MT plus treatment as usual (TAU) or TAU alone. TAU was typically intensive (71% were inpatients) and included the best combination of therapies available for each participant, excluding MT. Blinded assessments of the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) and 15 secondary outcomes were collected before randomisation and after 1, 3 and 9 months. Changes were analysed on an intention-to-treat basis using generalised estimating equations in longitudinal linear models, controlling for diagnosis, site and time point. RESULTS: MT was superior to TAU for total negative symptoms (SANS, d = 0.54, p \u3c 0.001) as well as functioning, clinical global impressions, social avoidance through music, and vitality (all p \u3c 0.01). CONCLUSION: Individual MT as conducted in routine practice is an effective addition to usual care for mental health care clients with low motivation

    Climate reconstruction from paired oxygen-isotope analyses of chironomid larval head capsules and endogenic carbonate (Hawes Water, UK) - Potential and problems

    Temperature and the oxygen isotopic composition (δ18O) of meteoric water are both important palaeoclimatic variables, but separating their influences on proxies such as the δ18O of lake carbonates is often problematic. The large temperature variations that are known to have occurred in the northern mid-latitudes during the Late Glacial make this interval an excellent test for a novel approach that combines oxygen-isotope analyses of chironomid larval head capsules with co-occurring endogenic carbonate. We apply this approach to a Late Glacial lake sediment sequence from Hawes Water (NW England). Oxygen-isotope values in chironomid head capsules show marked variations during the Late Glacial that are similar to the oxygen isotope record from endogenic carbonate. However, summer temperature reconstructions based on the paired isotope values and fractionation between chironomids and calcite yield values between −20 and −4 °C, which are unrealistic and far lower than reconstructions based on chironomid assemblages at the same site. The composition of a limited number of samples of fossil chironomid larval head capsules determined using Pyrolysis gas-chromatography mass spectrometry indicates the presence of aliphatic geopolymers, suggesting that diagenetic alteration of the head capsules has systematically biased the isotope-derived temperature estimates. However, a similar trend in the isotope records of the two sources suggests that a palaeoclimate signal is still preserved
