Coherence between rat sensorimotor system and hippocampus is enhanced during tactile discrimination
Rhythms with time scales of multiple cycles per second permeate the mammalian brain, yet neuroscientists are not certain of their functional roles. One leading idea is that coherent oscillation between two brain regions facilitates the exchange of information between them. In rats, the hippocampus and the vibrissal sensorimotor system both are characterized by rhythmic oscillation in the theta range, 5–12 Hz. Previous work has been divided as to whether the two rhythms are independent or coherent. To resolve this question, we acquired three measures from rats—whisker motion, hippocampal local field potential (LFP), and barrel cortex unit firing—during a whisker-mediated texture discrimination task and during control conditions (not engaged in a whisker-mediated memory task). Compared to control conditions, the theta band of hippocampal LFP showed a marked increase in power as the rats approached and then palpated the texture. Phase synchronization between whisking and hippocampal LFP increased by almost 50% during approach and texture palpation. In addition, a greater proportion of barrel cortex neurons showed firing that was phase-locked to hippocampal theta while rats were engaged in the discrimination task. Consistent with a behavioral consequence of phase synchronization, the rats identified the texture more rapidly and with lower error likelihood on trials in which there was an increase in theta-whisking coherence at the moment of texture palpation. These results suggest that coherence between the whisking rhythm, barrel cortex firing, and hippocampal LFP is augmented selectively during epochs in which the rat collects sensory information and that such coherence enhances the efficiency of integration of stimulus information into memory and decision-making centers
Short communication: Genetic parameters for post-weaning visual scores and reproductive traits in Suffolk sheep
The aim of this study was to estimate the coefficients of heritability and genetic correlations among visual scores (conformation, CPW; precocity, PPW; musculature, MPW) and reproductive traits: age at first lambing (AFL) and scrotal circumference (SC) evaluated at 180 days of age in Suffolk lambs. In the statistical model only the additive genetic effect was considered as random effect. The heritability estimates by univariate analyses for CPW, PPW, MPW, AFL and SC were 0.08, 0.12, 0.09, 0.20 and 0.22, respectively. The genetic correlations among AFL and CPW, PPW, MPW were -0.26, 0.19, and 0.08, respectively. The genetic correlation among SC and CPW, PPW, MPW were, respectively, 0.54, 0.88 and 0.86, and between AFL and SC was 0.26. The direct selection for conformation, precocity and musculature at 180 days of age and age at first lambing will provide slow genetic progress due to low heritability estimates. It is possible to obtain genetic gain in sexual precocity through selection on scrotal circumference in Suffolk rams. The favorable genetic correlation among visual scores and SC and between CPW and AFL, indicated the possibility to gain in genetic progress for reproductive traits through indirect selection of the visual scores in Suffolk sheep
First determination of the one-proton induced Non-Mesonic Weak Decay width of p-shell {\Lambda}-Hypernuclei
Previous studies of proton and neutron spectra from Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of
eight Lambda-Hypernuclei (A = 5-16) have been revisited. New values of the
ratio of the two-nucleon and the one-proton induced decay widths,
Gamma_2N/Gamma_p, are obtained from single proton spectra, Gamma_2N/Gamma_p =
0.50 +/- 0.24, and from neutron and proton coincidence spectra,
Gamma_2N/Gamma_p = 0.36 +/- 0.14stat +0.05sys -0.04sys , in full agreement with
previously published ones. With these values, a method is developed to extract
the one-proton induced decay width in units of the free Lambda decay width,
Gamma_p/Gamma_Lambda, without resorting to Intra Nuclear Cascade models but by
exploiting only experimental data, under the assumption of a linear dependence
on A of the Final State Interaction contribution. This is the first systematic
determination ever done and it agrees within the errors with recent theoretical
calculations.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 2 table
emission rates in absorptions at rest on Li, Li, Be, C and O
An experimental study of the reaction
on Li, Li, Be, C and O -shell nuclei is
presented. The data were collected by the FINUDA spectrometer operating at the
DANE -factory (LNF-INFN, Italy). Emission rates for the reaction in
the mentioned nuclei are measured and compared with the few existing data. The
spectra of several observables are discussed; indications of Quasi-Free
absorptions by a pair embedded in the nucleus can be obtained from
the study of the missing mass distributions.Comment: Version accepted by PR
Proton spectra from Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of p-shell Lambda-Hypernuclei and evidence for the two-nucleon induced process
New spectra from the FINUDA experiment of the Non Mesonic Weak Decay (NMWD)
proton kinetic energy for 9(Lambda)Be, 11(Lambda)B, 12(Lambda)C, 13(Lambda)C,
15 (Lambda)N and 16(Lambda)O are presented and discussed along with the
published data on 5(Lambda)He and 7(Lambda)Li. Exploiting the large mass number
range and the low energy threshold (15 MeV) for the proton detection of FINUDA,
an evaluation of both Final State Interactions (FSI) and the two nucleon
induced NMWD contributions to the decay process has been done. Based on this
evaluation, a linear dependence of FSI on the hypernuclear mass number A is
found and for the two nucleon stimulated decay rate the experimental value of
Gamma2/Gammap=0.43+-0.25 is determined for the first time. A value for the two
nucleon stimulated decay rate to the total decay rate
Gamma2/GammaNMWD=0.24+-0.10 is also extracted.Comment: 11 pages and 2 figure
Production of H and H with the (K,) reaction
The production of neutron rich -hypernuclei via the
(,) reaction has been studied using data collected with the
FINUDA spectrometer at the DANE -factory (LNF). The analysis of the
inclusive momentum spectra is presented and an upper limit for the
production of H and H from Li and Li, is
assessed for the first time.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in PL
A study of the proton spectra following the capture of in Li and C with FINUDA
Momenta spectra of protons emitted following the capture of in Li
and C have been measured with 1% resolution. The C spectrum is
smooth whereas for Li a well defined peak appears at about 500 MeV/. The
first observation of a structure in this region was identified as a strange
tribaryon or, possibly, a -nuclear state. The peak is correlated with a
coming from decay in flight, selected by setting momenta
larger than 275 MeV/. The could be produced, together with a 500
MeV/ proton, by the capture of a in a deuteron-cluster substructure of
the Li nucleus. The capture rate for such a reaction is (1.62\pm
0.23_{stat} ^{+0.71}_{-0.44}(sys))%/K^-_{stop}, in agreement with the existing
observations on He targets and with the hypothesis that the Li nucleus
can be interpreted as a cluster.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in NP
Enhancement of Threshold Cross Sections by In-Medium Final State Interactions
We address the problem of pion production in low energy -nucleus
collisions. For the production mechanism we assume a simple model consisting of
a coherent sum of single pion exchange and the excitation---followed by the
decay into two pions and a nucleon---of the resonance. The
production amplitude is modified by the final state interaction between the
pions calculated using the chirally improved J\"ulich meson exchange model
including the polarization of the nuclear medium by the pions. The model
reproduces well the experimentally observed cross
sections, especially the enhancement with increasing of the
mass distribution in the threshold region.Comment: 5 pages RevTeX, 3-eps figure
