New patterns in steady-state chemical kinetics: intersections, coincidences, map of events (two-step mechanism)
New patterns of steady-state chemical kinetics for continuously stirred-tank reactors (CSTR) have been found, i.e., intersections, maxima and coincidences, for two-step mechanism ABC. There were found elegant analytical relationships for characteristics of these patterns (space times, values of concentrations and rates) allowing kinetic parameters to be easily determined. It was demonstrated that for the pair of species involved into the irreversible reaction (B and C), the space time of their corresponding concentration dependence intersection is invariant and does not depend on the initial conditions of the system. Maps of patterns are presented for visualization of their combinations and ranking in space time, and values of concentration and rates
Constructing a rational kinetic model of the selective propane oxidation over a mixed metal oxide catalyst
This research presents a kinetic investigation of the selective oxidation of propane to acrylic acid over a MoVTeNb oxide (M1 phase) catalyst. The paper contains both an overview of the related literature, and original results with a focus on kinetic aspects. Two types of kinetic experiments were performed in a plug flow reactor, observing (i) steady-state conditions (partial pressure variations) and (ii) the catalyst evolution as a function of time-on-stream. For this, the catalyst was treated in reducing atmosphere, before re-oxidising it. These observations in long term behaviour were used to distinguish different catalytic routes, namely for the formation of propene, acetic acid, acrylic acid, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. A partial carbon balance was introduced, which is a ‘kinetic fingerprint’, that distinguishes one type of active site from another. Furthermore, an ‘active site’ was found to consist of one or more ‘active centres’. A rational mechanism was developed based on the theory of graphs and includes two time scales belonging to (i) the catalytic cycle and (ii) the catalyst evolution. Several different types of active sites exist, at least as many, as kinetically independent product molecules are formed over a catalyst surface
Flight delay performance at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
Abstract
Purpose:
The main objective of this paper is to determine the annual cyclical flight delays at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta
International Airport. Then using other data such as annual precipitation, passenger and aircraft traffic volumes and other
factors, we attempted to correlate these factors with overall delays. These data could assist airport management in predicting
periods of flight delay.
Design/methodology/approach:
Data were taken and analyzed from the data base “Research and Innovation
Technology Administration” (RITA) for the years 2005-2011 for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The data
included 2.8 million flights originating and departing from this airport.
Data were also gathered from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) showing precipitation.
Additional data were gathered from the FAA regarding delay causes, number and types of delays and changes to the
infrastructure of ATL airport.
Findings:
T
here is a repeatable annual pattern of delays at ATL that can be modelled using delay data from the Bureau of
Transportation Statistics. This pattern appears to be caused primarily by the frequency and amount of precipitation that falls
at ATL and by the amount of flights that arrive and depart at ATL.
Originality/value:
This information could assist airport operations personnel, FAA air traffic controllers and airlines in
anticipating and mitigating delays at specific times of the year.Peer Reviewe
