    Modeling Traffic Through Intersections

    This paper analyzes the effects traffic flow controllers, such as stop signs and stop lights, have on the flow of traffic through a 4-way intersection. In particular, we investigate which controller (either using 2 stop signs, 4 stop signs, or stop lights) to use depending on the number of cars in a lane. We use a method that accounts for a set number of cars in each lane and a car’s velocity based on the distance to the stop line or to the car in front. We also account for how a car will turn once it reaches the stop line. When a car stops at an intersection, we change our model depending on the traffic flow controller being used. With stop signs, a car must first stop and can only proceed when certain cars have cleared the intersection. With lights, a car must wait for the appropriate light to turn green before the car can continue moving. In the end, we found it best to use 2 stop signs when there are less than 20 cars in each lane, stop lights when there are more than 30 cars in each lane, and 4 stop signs otherwise

    Ciproxifan, an H~3~ Receptor Antagonist, Improves Learning and Memory in the APP Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease

    Mice that express the mutant form of the human amyloid precursor gene associated with early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease demonstrate memory deficits and amyloid plaques. We show here that ciproxifan, a prototypical antagonist of H~3~-type histamine receptors, alleviates two types of learning and memory impairments in such mice. These data support the idea that modulation of H~3~ receptors represents a viable therapeutic strategy in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease

    Adaptive structuration theory (AST, DeSanctis and Poole 1994) describes how people come to understand and use a technology. In this paper we develop the idea of proactive structuration--how social networking can be proactively managed in order to speed the comprehensive adaptation of a technology within a community of users. We examine two facets of proactive structuration--formal institutionalization of a community of practice and socialization of users--and stochastically model the impact of proactive structuration on comprehensive adaptation latency. Implications for the effective management of new technology adoption are discussed.

    Major depressive disorder as a co-morbid diagnosis in schizophrenia versus the diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder – depressed type

    The purpose of this article is to focus on the importance of depressive symptoms in patients suffering from schizophrenia, and the dilemma posed by hierarchical classification methods, which exclude co-morbid diagnoses such as Major Depressive Disorder in patients with schizophrenia. The question arises that if Major Depressive Disorder is only categorized under the diagnosis of Schizoaffective Disorder (depressed type), are we able to recognize these symptoms promptly and treat them sufficiently? The duration of the substantial period of depressed mood referred to in the DSM IV TR criteria for Schizoaffective Disorder is unspecified. We suggest that one should only allocate the latter diagnosis if the substantial period is that of one third or more of the whole duration of the illness. Identification of the optimal cutoff point can generate further hypothesis testing research and refinement of the diagnostic model. It is not only important to refine the diagnosis, but it is even more important to detect these symptoms and treat promptly and effectively. According to the latest literature, the best possible treatment for depression in schizophrenia appears to be the combination of a second-generation antipsychotic and cognitive psychotherapy.     Groups and teams are critical to modern organizations, and consequently management education has incorporated groups as a centerpiece of both content (the study of group process) and process (the use of study groups and group projects). Unfortunately, working-adult educational programs appear to have yet to take an important final step - acknowledging that study groups often interact virtually and then providing support for virtual study group interaction. We provide both theory and data concerning the use of study groups as virtual teams. We believe that there are important benefits to be gained when study groups make educated decisions about the design and process of their virtual interaction

    Reaching for the Moon: Expanding transactive memory\u27s reach with wikis and tagging

    Transactive memory systems (TMS) support knowledge sharing and coordination in groups. TMS are enabled by the encoding, storage, retrieval, and communication of knowledge by domain experts-knowing who knows what. The NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics Group provides an example of how TMS theoretical boundaries are stretched in actual use. This group is characterized as being highly innovative as they routinely engage in field studies that are inherently difficult due to time and technology resource constraints. We provide an expanded view of TMS that includes the technology support system available to this group, and possible further extensions to NASA\u27s or other such dynamic groups\u27 practice

    A study on sustainable waste disposal in South Africa using mechanical biological waste treatment.

    Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2009.The landfilling of Municipal Solid Waste poses a threat to the environment in the form of landfill emissions. These emissions are a result of the biochemical breakdown of the waste in the anaerobic landfill environment. A solution to this problem has been found in the form of the mechanical-biological treatment of waste. This technology involves mechanical and biological processing of the waste before it is placed in the landfill. The pretreatment accelerates the degradation of the waste resulting in the landfilling of a more biologically stable product, resulting in a reduction of the emission potential of the landfill. This research aims at investigating the applicability and efficiency of a passively ventilated MBT windrow system under a sub-tropical climate. The research was conducted in two stages: the first stage focused on the implementation and analysis of the Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) process with aerobic windrows, employing the Dome Aeration Technology (OAT) (Mollekopf et al. 2002). Three OAT windrows were constructed at the Bisasar Road Landfill in Durban in order to study the efficiency of the process after different composting timeframes (8 and 20 weeks). The study proved that the use of the OAT technology is a viable option. The second stage was the analysis of this treated waste in an anaerobic environment, in order to simulate landfill conditions and, thus gain insight into the effect of MBP on landfill emissions. Six Iysimeters and 5 columns as well as numerous eluate tests were conducted in order to study the "post-Iandfilled" behaviour of the waste and the effect that waste treatment, composting time and screening have on liquid and gaseous emissions. A basic cost estimate using the Clean Development Mechanism for financial assistance was conducted. The results of this research were then utilised to make recommendations on sustainable waste disposal options. The findings of the research were that although the MBT did not reduce emission levels sufficiently to allow for a 40 year landfill aftercare period, the benefit over the landfilling of untreated waste is significant
