    The STOLAND system includes air data, navigation, guidance, flight director (including a throttle flight director on the Augmentor Wing), 3-axis autopilot and autothrottle functions. The 3-axis autopilot and autothrottle control through parallel electric servos on both aircraft and on the augmentor wing, the system also interfaces with three electrohydraulic series actuators which drive the roll control surfaces, elevator and rudder. The system incorporates automatic configuration control of the flaps and nozzles on the augmentor wing and of the flaps on the Twin Otter. Interfaces are also provided to control the wing flap chokes on the Augmentor Wing and the spoilers on the Twin Otter. The STOLAND system has all the capabilities of a conventional integrated avionics system. Aircraft stabilization is provided in pitch, roll and yaw including control wheel steering in pitch and roll. The basic modes include altitude hold and select, indicated airspeed hold and select, flight path angle hold and select, and heading hold and select. The system can couple to TACAN and VOR/DME navaids for conventional radial flying

    Conducting a Competitive Prototype Acquisition Program: An Account of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) Technology Development Phase.

    The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) was among the first defense programs to require a competitive prototyping acquisition strategy under the 19 Sep 07 USD (AT&L) policy Memorandum, Prototyping and Competition. At Milestone A, the program was directed to inform the requirements process, validate technology maturity, assess commonality of components across a family of vehicles, and assess manufacturing risks. As a result, the joint program office simultaneously executed three weapon system prototyping contracts in a continuously competitive environment while meeting cost, schedule, and performance objectives. The goal of the JAP was to describe the program management strategy used in the JLTV Technology Development (TD) phase. The resulting document is a firsthand perspective from working within the Product Manager (PM). It discusses how TD acquisition phase program objectives were addressed and several unique management solutions. The focus is an account of planning and managing three contracts from Sep 2008 until May 2010. Information from the JLTV TD phase has significantly changed the requirements for the EMD phase. In addition to informing requirements, the program leveraged the competitive environment by maintaining constant emphasis on the contractors to meet cost and schedule.     Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus responsive to 308-nm excimer laser treatment.

    Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN) is a rare cutaneous disease that presents as linear psoriasiform plaques with associated prominent pruritus. The lesions commonly pre-sent on the legs with onset during childhood. Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus typically is refractory to treatment. Therapies range from topical treatments to lasers and surgical options. It is clinically and histopathologically similar to psoriasis, suggesting it may respond to established psoriasis treatments such as the excimer laser. We report the case of an otherwise healthy 20-year-old woman with dry, pruritic, red lesions on the right leg that had been present since infancy.     The dead shall be raised : Multidisciplinary analysis of human skeletons reveals complexity in 19th century immigrant socioeconomic history and identity in New Haven, Connecticut

    In July 2011, renovations to Yale-New Haven Hospital inadvertently exposed the cemetery of Christ Church, New Haven, Connecticut’s first Catholic cemetery. While this cemetery was active between 1833 and 1851, both the church and its cemetery disappeared from public records, making the discovery serendipitous. Four relatively well-preserved adult skeletons were recovered with few artifacts. All four individuals show indicators of manual labor, health and disease stressors, and dental health issues. Two show indicators of trauma, with the possibility of judicial hanging in one individual. Musculoskeletal markings are consistent with physical stress, and two individuals have arthritic indicators of repetitive movement/specialized activities. Radiographic analyses show osteopenia, healed trauma, and other pathologies in several individuals. Dental calculus analysis did not identify any tuberculosis indicators, despite osteological markers. Isotopic analyses of teeth indicate that all four were likely recent immigrants to the Northeastern United States. Nuclear and mitochondrial DNA were recovered from three individuals, and these analyses identified ancestry, hair/eye color, and relatedness. Genetic and isotopic results upended our initial ancestry assessment based on burial context alone. These individuals provide biocultural evidence of New Haven’s Industrial Revolution and the plasticity of ethnic and religious identity in the immigrant experience. Their recovery and the multifaceted analyses described here illuminate a previously undescribed part of the city’s rich history. The collective expertise of biological, geochemical, archaeological, and historical researchers interprets socioeconomic and cultural identity better than any one could alone. Our combined efforts changed our initial assumptions of a poor urban Catholic cemetery’s membership, and provide a template for future discoveries and analyses
