The Use of Mobile Devices as Group Wisdom Support Systems to Support Dynamic Crowdsourcing Efforts

    Get PDF
Early group decision support systems (GDSS) literature discussed how group size and member proximity impacted the design of the room and technology necessary to facilitate group decision-making. A Legislative Session is the early term for a large group that holds face to face meetings. With advances in mobile technology, we can turn any large group meeting into an opportunity to capture the wisdom of the crowd. This paper will describe how both crowdsourcing initiatives and group wisdom support systems (GWSS) initiatives can be supported by mobile devices. An example of a keynote address at an academic conference and the use of JoinSpeaker technology will be presented as a way to hold a dynamic crowdsourcing effort

Overcoming Email Addiction: Understanding the \u27Leave Me Alone!\u27 Approach

Almost a necessity for communication, email consumes significant portions of knowledge workers’ time in today’s organizations. Though issues such as spam, filtering, and archiving have received much attention from industry and academia, the critical problem of the timing of email processing has not been studied much. It is common for many knowledge workers to check and respond to their emails almost continuously. Though some emails may require very quick responses, continuous email checking may lead to workplace interruptions and overload. This study presents a framework for studying email response timing approaches to minimize the communication times and yet reduce the interruptive effects. A rigorous analysis of the effective and efficient email processing policies, in a series of two-phase simulated virtual experiments, is performed by comparing various ways to reduce interruptions for various work settings. Findings suggest that managing email processing can make a significant difference in workplace productivity

Modeling and Simulation of Knowledge Worker Attention for Evaluation of Email Processing Strategies

Even small gains in the efficient management of email can have big impacts on organizations because of the volume of email received by most knowledge workers. This study proposed that 1) knowledge workers should use available means to separate urgent from non-urgent email messages, and 2) the non-urgent email should be treated differently - primarily it should not be allowed to interrupt the knowledge worker's primary activities. The study compares the effects of various email processing strategies on various knowledge worker performance outcomes including email resolution time, knowledge worker efficiency and total hours spent working daily. High level knowledge workers who were dependent on email for their work lives were interviewed, and interesting insights into how and why email is processed were gained. The study then explored what type of impact various alternatives to continuously monitoring email might have on the knowledge worker's performance. Simulation was used to create the email environment faced by a knowledge worker. The various email processing strategies were then simulated and the performance measures were collected and compared across various email processing strategies. A Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was performed comparing performance measures (knowledge worker efficiency, email resolution time, and total hours worked daily) across groups, each group corresponding to an alternative email processing strategy. Next, optimization software (Optquest) was used to find optimal email processing strategies, given constraints on performance. Finally, the results of the optimization were compared against those obtained through brute force analysis. Processing all non-urgent email messages only twice daily or processing all non-urgent email in batches corresponding to ïżœ of one day's email processing load allowed for statistically significant (α = 0.001) gains in knowledge worker efficiency of 3%, when compared to continuously monitoring email messages. These gains imply hours of time that could be saved by individual knowledge workers after only weeks of time. Furthermore, these gains were not made at the expense of the appropriate resolution of email. The optimization software, Optquest, also was successful at finding optimal email processing strategies, given constraints on performance. The results of the Optquest software were consistent with those results obtained through brute force analysis.Department of Management Science & Information Systems (PhD

Evaluation of the ALMA Prototype Antennas

    Get PDF
The ALMA North American and European prototype antennas have been evaluated by a variety of measurement systems to quantify the major performance specifications. Nearfield holography was used to set the reflector surfaces to 17 microns RMS. Pointing and fast switching performance was determined with an optical telescope and by millimeter wavelength radiometry, yielding 2 arcsec absolute and 0.6 arcsec offset pointing accuracies. Path length stability was measured to be less than or approximately equal to 20 microns over 10 minute time periods using optical measurement devices. Dynamical performance was studied with a set of accelerometers, providing data on wind induced tracking errors and structural deformation. Considering all measurements made during this evaluation, both prototype antennas meet the major ALMA antenna performance specifications.Comment: 83 pages, 36 figures, AASTex format, to appear in PASP September 2006 issu

Route Exploration and Synthesis of The Reported Pyridone-Based PDI Inhibitor STK076545

The enzyme protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) is essential for the correct folding of proteins and the activation of certain cell surface receptors, and is a promising target for the treatment of cancer and thrombotic conditions. A previous high-throughput screen identified the commercial compound STK076545 as a promising PDI inhibitor. To confirm its activity and support further biological studies, a resynthesis was pursued of the reported ÎČ-keto-amide with an N-alkylated pyridone at the α-position. Numerous conventional approaches were complicated by undesired fragmentations or rearrangements. However, a successful 5-step synthetic route was achieved using an aldol reaction with an α-pyridone allyl ester as a key step. An X-ray crystal structure of the final compound confirmed that the reported structure of STK076545 was achieved, however its lack of PDI activity and inconsistent spectral data suggest that the commercial structure was misassigned

Am 31. Oktober 2017 jĂ€hrte sich der sog. Thesenanschlag Martin Luthers zum 500. Mal.
