Average polarization of 12B in 12C(μ, ν) 12B(g.s.) reaction: Helicity of the π-decay muon and nature of the weak coupling
The helicity, h -, of μ - in π-decay has been determined as positive (h -≥+0.90) from the average polarization, P av≡〈J B·s μ〉, of 12B produced in the μ -+ 12C→ν μ+ 12B reaction. We obtain also dynamical information on μ-capture: (i) the weak magnetism form factor, μ=4.5±1.1, and (ii) the sum of the induced pseudoscalar (g p) and the 2nd class induced tensor (g T) couplings versus g A, ( g P+g T) g A=7.1±2.7. The latter result, adopting the "canonical" value of g P g A, leads to g T g A=+1±2.7 which is compatible with zero and in strong contradiction with the value {reversed tilde equals}-6 recently advocated by Kubodera, Delorme and Rho. © 1977
Sharpening Low-Energy, Standard-Model Tests via Correlation Coefficients in Neutron Beta-Decay
The correlation coefficients a, A, and B in neutron beta-decay are
proportional to the ratio of the axial-vector to vector weak coupling
constants, g_A/g_V, to leading recoil order. With the advent of the next
generation of neutron decay experiments, the recoil-order corrections to these
expressions become experimentally accessible, admitting a plurality of Standard
Model (SM) tests. The measurement of both a and A, e.g., allows one to test the
conserved-vector-current (CVC) hypothesis and to search for second-class
currents (SCC) independently. The anticipated precision of these measurements
suggests that the bounds on CVC violation and SCC from studies of nuclear
beta-decay can be qualitatively bettered. Departures from SM expectations can
be interpreted as evidence for non-V-A currents.Comment: 4 pages, REVTeX, intro. broadened, typos fixed, to appear in PR
Polarimetry of 16Ngs produced in mu --capture on 16O nuclei
A polarimetry technique based on stack targets and /3-'/-coincidences
has been applied to the 16N nuclei produced in the ground state capture
of negative muons on lb0 nuclei. The performance of the polarimeter and
the first measurements of /3-asymmetry due to the longitudinal nuclear
polarization are discussed
Radiative Muon Capture on Hydrogen and the Induced Pseudoscalar Coupling
The first measurement of the elementary process is reported. A photon pair spectrometer was used to measure
the partial branching ratio ( for photons of k >
60 MeV. The value of the weak pseudoscalar coupling constant determined from
the partial branching ratio is , where the first error is the quadrature sum of statistical
and systematic uncertainties and the second error is due to the uncertainty in
, the decay rate of the ortho to para molecule. This
value of g_p is 1.5 times the prediction of PCAC and pion-pole dominance.Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX type, 3 figures (encapsulated postscript), submitted

Standard Neutrino Spectrum from B-8 Decay
We present a systematic evaluation of the shape of the neutrino energy
spectrum produced by beta-decay of B. We place special emphasis on
determining the range of uncertainties permitted by existing laboratory data
and theoretical ingredients (such as forbidden and radiative corrections). We
review and compare the available experimental data on the
BBe decay chain. We analyze the theoretical and
experimental uncertainties quantitatively. We give a numerical representation
of the best-fit (standard-model) neutrino spectrum, as well as two extreme
deviations from the standard spectrum that represent the total (experimental
and theoretical) effective deviations. Solar neutrino experiments
that are currently being developed will be able to measure the shape of the
B neutrino spectrum above about 5 MeV. An observed distortion of the B
solar neutrino spectrum outside the range given in the present work could be
considered as evidence, at an effective significance level greater than three
standard deviations, for physics beyond the standard electroweak model. We use
the most recent available experimental data on the Gamow--Teller strengths in
the system to calculate the B neutrino absorption cross section on
chlorine: ~cm (
errors). The chlorine cross section is also given as a function of the neutrino
energy. The B neutrino absorption cross section in gallium is cm ( errors).Comment: Revised version, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Induced pseudoscalar coupling of the proton weak interaction
The induced pseudoscalar coupling is the least well known of the weak
coupling constants of the proton's charged--current interaction. Its size is
dictated by chiral symmetry arguments, and its measurement represents an
important test of quantum chromodynamics at low energies. During the past
decade a large body of new data relevant to the coupling has been
accumulated. This data includes measurements of radiative and non radiative
muon capture on targets ranging from hydrogen and few--nucleon systems to
complex nuclei. Herein the authors review the theoretical underpinnings of
, the experimental studies of , and the procedures and uncertainties
in extracting the coupling from data. Current puzzles are highlighted and
future opportunities are discussed.Comment: 58 pages, Latex, Revtex4, prepared for Reviews of Modern Physic

Note sur la corrélation directionnelle β-γ du 86Rb
In this note we state precisely some of our results on the β-γ directional corre lation of Rb86 reported in this Journal (réf. 1). Taking into account corrections, we obtain the somewhat modified value given in the text.
Measurements have been made of certain angular correlations as well as of several internal conversions. In this way, it has been possible to determine angular moments and parities of the upper levels in the β— disintegration of 116In. An explanation is offered for the inconsistency with the results of previous measurements of the γ 2.12 MeV — γ 0.42 MeV angular correlation. By internal conversion the mixing ratio (M1/E2) of the 0.8 MeV transition from the second 2+ level has been determined. The K/L ratio linked to the 1 298 keV transition yields results which are in accordance with the theoretical value obtained by Sliv and Band.
