    Report to the New York City Housing Authority on Applying and Lifting Permanent Exclusions for Criminal Conduct

    The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is conducting an internal review of its policies related to permanent exclusions for criminal conduct on NYCHA property.Ā Permanent exclusion (PE) occurs when a NYCHA tenantā€”rather than risk evictionā€”enters into a stipulation that those associated with the resident who have engaged in non-desirable behavior are barred from entering the apartment. It also occurs as a result of an administrative hearing where NYCHA seeks an eviction, but the hearing officer opts to preserve the tenancy and bars the offending person from the apartment.To inform this policy review, NYCHA partnered with the Vera Institute of Justice and John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The review sought to understand how NYCHA could better balance its commitments to the safety of the community, the stability of its tenants' families, and the successful reentry of formerly incarcerated people.Ā The following recommendations reflect an extensive review of existing policies and practices around PE, interviews with NYCHA staff, a meeting with NYCHA residents, and social science research on risk mitigation and future offending

    Modern Christianity is saturated with Bible studies for students. However, a crucial skill the Christian student needs to learn ā€“ how to study the Bible independently ā€“ is a topic difficult to find in contemporary youth Bible study curricula. While there is a wealth of biblically sound, helpful Bible studies that students can benefit from, it is essential that students do not remain dependent on these resources. One goal for youth ministry leaders is that their students graduate high school with the knowledge and tools they need to interpret the Scriptures for themselves correctly. The creative thesis will be an inductive Bible study curriculum for high school students that will equip students to explore the riches of God\u27s Word

    Effects of a Geographically-Targeted Intervention and Creative Outreach to Reduce Shelter Intake in Portland, Oregon

    Animal shelters focus much of their efforts towards decreasing euthanasia and one of the best ways to reduce euthanasia risk may be to prevent cats and dogs from ever entering a shelter. This study, conducted in Portland, Oregon, relied on the capabilities of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to precisely and scientifically identify an intervention area (with high shelter intake) and to identify control areas to compare the project results with community-wide trends. The intervention itself was designed and implemented in a comprehensive way by seeking numerous paths to engage pet owners and reduce shelter intake of cats and Pit Bull type dogs. This research highlighted the ability of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to significantly improve a community's capacity to identify the most appropriate locations to focus resources and to closely track and measure interventions. Portland's targeted intervention to reduce shelter intake utilized many outreach tools with varying levels of impact. The overall intervention yielded a reduction in intake of owned cats that was greater in total numbers and percentage than four control areas. Furthermore, this work identified a percentage of cat spay/neuter out of the estimated number of owned, originally intact cats within the intervention and control areas. As percentages approached or surpassed 20%, those areas realized larger intake reductions than control areas with lower percentages

    Knowledge and skill requirements for marketing positions: the gap between employers' and undergraduate marketing students' expectations in Kuching, Sarawak

    Marketing education has seen a tremendous growth over the years. Thus, marketing education has a responsibility of preparing marketers of the future with the relevant knowledge and skills essential for subsequent organizational and career success. However, there is little research done on the effectiveness of marketing education in Malaysia focusing on purely marketing elements. Our research attempts to identify what undergraduate marketing students in Sarawak expect of their jobs and how these expectations can be compared to the needs of the job markets and identifying areas of commonality and difference. This study will use qualitative and the quantitative method. Data will be analysed using the SPSS 17.0 software and descriptive analysis will be used extensively in this study. With a greater insight into the expectations of employers and students alike, we hope to draw some conclusion about the effectiveness of the current degree program in encouraging students to develop the capability required if they are to be employed as fresh graduates. Furthermore, the findings would provide suggestions for how courses offered by the universities and institutions of higher learning could be adapted to reflect employers' needs

    Increased perceptual distraction and task demand enhances gaze and non-biological cuing effects.

    This study aims to improve understanding of how distracting information and target task demands influence the strength of gaze and non-biological (arrow and moving line) cuing effects. Using known non-predictive central cues, we manipulated the degree of distraction from additional information presented on the other side of the target, and target task difficulty. In Experiment 1, we used the traditional unilateral cuing task, where participants state the location of an asterisk and the non-target location is empty (no distraction). Experiment 2 comprised a harder localisation task (which side contains an embedded oddball item) and presented distracting target-related information on the other side. In Experiment 3, we used a discrimination task (upright or inverted embedded T) with distracter information that was unrelated or related to the target (low vs. high distraction, respectively). We found that the magnitude of cuing scaled with the degree of combined distraction and task demands, increasing up to six-fold from Experiments 1 and 2 to the high-distraction condition in Experiment 3. Thus, depleting attentional resources in this manner appears to weaken the ability to ignore uninformative directional cues. Findings are discussed within the framework of a resource-limited account of cue inhibition
