    Cambrian stem-group annelids and a metameric origin of the annelid head

    The oldest fossil annelids come from the Early Cambrian Sirius Passet and Guanshan biotas and Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale. While these are among the best preserved polychaete fossils, their relationship to living taxa is contentious, having been interpreted either as members of extant clades or as a grade outside the crown group. New morphological observations from five Cambrian species include the oldest polychaete with head appendages, a new specimen of Pygocirrus from Sirius Passet, and an undescribed form from the Burgess Shale. We propose that the palps of Canadia are on an anterior segment bearing neuropodia and that the head of Phragmochaeta is formed of a segment bearing biramous parapodia and chaetae. The unusual anatomy of these taxa suggests that the head is not differentiated into a prostomium and peristomium, that palps are derived from a modified parapodium and that the annelid head was originally a parapodium-bearing segment. Canadia, Phragmochaeta and the Marble Canyon annelid share the presence of protective notochaetae, interpreted as a primitive character state subsequently lost in Pygocirrus and Burgessochaeta, in which the head is clearly differentiated from the trunk

    We present a genome assembly from a female specimen of Cylindroiulus punctatus (club-tailed millipede; Arthropoda; Diplopoda; Julida; Julidae). The genome sequence has a total length of 354.09 megabases. Most of the assembly (92.9%) is scaffolded into 7 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 18.98 kilobases

    First Molecular Data and the Phylogenetic Position of the Millipede-Like Centipede Edentistoma octosulcatum Tömösváry, 1882 (Chilopoda: Scolopendromorpha: Scolopendridae)

    Edentistoma octosulcatum To¨mo¨ sva´ ry, 1882, is a rare, superficially millipede-like centipede known only from Borneo and the Philippines. It is unique within the order Scolopendromorpha for its slow gait, robust tergites, and highly modified gizzard and mandible morphology. Not much is known about the biology of the species but it has been speculated to be arboreal with a possibly vegetarian diet. Until now its phylogenetic position within the subfamily Otostigminae has been based only on morphological characters, being variably ranked as a monotypic tribe (Arrhabdotini) or classified with the Southeast Asian genus Sterropristes Attems, 1934. The first molecular data for E. octosulcatum sourced from a newly collected specimen from Sarawak were analysed with and without morphology. Parsimony analysis of 122 morphological characters together with two nuclear and two mitochondrial loci resolves Edentistoma as sister group to three Indo-Australian species of Rhysida, this clade in turn grouping with Ethmostigmus, whereas maximum likelihood and parsimony analyses of the molecular data on their own ally Edentistoma with species of Otostigmus. A position of Edentistoma within Otostigmini (rather than being its sister group as predicted by the Arrhabdotini hypothesis) is consistently retrieved under different analytical conditions, but support values within the subfamily remain low for most nodes. The species exhibits strong pushing behaviour, suggestive of burrowing habits. Evidence against a suggested vegetarian diet is provided by observation of E. octosulcatum feeding on millipedes in the genus Trachelomegalus.Peer reviewe

    We present a genome assembly from a female specimen of Lithobius variegatus (banded centipede; Arthropoda; Chilopoda; Lithobiomorpha; Lithobiidae). The assembly contains two haplotypes with total lengths of 1,766.49 megabases and 1,768.00 megabases. Most of haplotype 1 (97.68%) is scaffolded into 23 chromosomal pseudomolecules. Haplotype 2 was assembled to scaffold level. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 17.44 kilobases

    Morphology of the radiodontan Lyrarapax from the early Cambrian Chengjiang biota

    The recently described radiodontan Lyrarapax unguispinus Cong et al., 2014, from the Chengjiang biota (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 3) highlighted a new morphological type of frontal appendage and unique mouth structures, a functional combination reinforcing the diversification of feeding strategies of radiodontans during the early Cambrian. Here we describe Lyrarapax trilobus sp. nov. from the same fossil Konservat-Lagerstätte. The new species differs from L. unguispinus in the morphology and distribution of endites on the frontal appendage and the strengthening structure of the body flaps. The two species resemble each other in body shape (pattern of flap size), neck segment number, cephalic plates, and most importantly a mouth characterized by concentric wrinkled furrows. The latter confirms that a soft mouth without sclerotised plates is a real feature of Lyrarapax and supports the idea that oral structures provide valid diagnostic characters within Radiodonta

    Palaeoscolecids from the Ludlow Series of Leintwardine, Herefordshire ( UK ): the latest occurrence of palaeoscolecids in the fossil record

    The documentation of cuticular micro‐ornament is vital for the taxonomic assignment of palaeoscolecids: vermiform lower Palaeozoic ecdysozoans interpreted as stem‐group priapulans or early diverging panarthropods. This is due to the absence of the character‐rich proboscis and tail hooks in palaeoscolecid material not from Burgess Shale‐type Konservat‐Lagerstätten. Here, the cuticular micro‐ornamentation of palaeoscolecids from the upper Silurian (Ludlow) fauna of Leintwardine (Herefordshire, England), is described using scanning electron microscopy and reflectance transformation imaging. This material is taxonomically unstable because it was included in an effective wastebasket genus (Protoscolex) long before these imaging techniques were developed. The Leintwardine material is shown to be most closely comparable to a palaeoscolecid from the Darriwilian (Middle Ordovician) of the Builth–Llandrindod inlier, Powys, Wales, and is transferred accordingly to Radnorscolex Botting et al. as Radnorscolex latus (Bather). The Leintwardine fauna represents the uppermost stratigraphic occurrence of palaeoscolecids, constrained to the Saetograptus leintwardinensis Zone (lower Ludfordian), and the comparatively sparse Silurian palaeoscolecid record is subsequently discussed. It is hypothesized that palaeoscolecids may have become extinct during the mid‐Ludfordian Lau Event, the onset of which is recorded in the biozone immediately above the Leintwardine fauna (Bohemograptus Zone). Finally, the British palaeoscolecid fauna is summarized, including a new record from the Dapingian (Middle Ordovician) of Carmarthenshire, South Wales
