    The Kaumatua Mirimiri Programme was funded as a Service to Improve Access project under a contract which ran from 1st September 2004 to 30th June 2005. Its aim was to provide a “culturally based treatment and recovery programme to restore the health and independence” of people aged 40 years and over (Pinnacle Group Ltd, 2004a, p.1). However, as the service specification in the contract made clear, the programme was not designed be exclusive: it has attracted younger as well as older people, non-Māori as well as Māori, and people seeking help for a wide range of ailments and pain

    Collaboration in family violence intervention: A process evaluation of the hamilton Family Safety Team

    The Family Safety Team (FST) is a collaborative intervention developed to address family violence in New Zealand. Interagency collaborations are effective at addressing the social supports for battery, improving the systems and responses of agencies that address battery, and improving cohesion and consistency across agencies. The FST has a particular focus on justice system agencies. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the Hamilton FST. The research was conducted using in-depth interviews with FST members and others directly involved with the project, archival research using police family violence files, observation of FST meetings, and a focus group with battered women. The evaluation was constructed around four aims: to identify any barriers to establishing the FST, to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the Hamilton FST, to determine the adequacy of the FST structure, and to assess the extent to which the FST has improved the ability of agencies to enhance the safety and autonomy of battered women and hold offenders accountable. An overall finding of this evaluation was that people are feeling very positive about the Hamilton FST. The evaluation found that the FST has increased contact and communication between community and government agencies, and there was improvement in each agency's awareness of the policies, processes and protocols of other agencies in the FST. The evaluation found some limitations in the amount of monitoring and measurable outcomes from the FST, but this was understandable considering the infancy of the project and the time taken for members to understand their roles and the function of the FST. However, there were some positive developments in police responsiveness: an improved police attitude towards family violence cases, and an increase in cases coded as family violence. An important finding of this evaluation was that the Hamilton FST is functioning as a genuine collaboration. This seemed to be due to: mutual respect and an equal distribution of power among FST members, trusted working relationships, recognising each member for their area of expertise, and the role of the coordinator.     We have identified galaxies near two quasars which are at the redshift of damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems in the UV spectra of the quasars. Both galaxies are actively forming stars. One galaxy has a luminosity close to the break in the local galaxy luminosity function, L*, the other is significantly fainter than L* and appears to be interacting with a nearby companion. Despite the strong selection effects favoring spectroscopic identification of the most luminous DLA galaxies, many of the spectroscopically-identified DLA galaxies in the literature are sub-L*, suggesting that the majority of the DLA population is probably sub-L*, in contrast to MgII absorbers at similar redshifts whose mean luminosity is close to L*.Comment: 9 pages, to appear in AJ, November 2003 issu

    NFX1-123 is highly expressed in cervical cancer and increases growth and telomerase activity in HPV 16E6 expressing cells

    A significant contributor to women’s cancer mortality worldwide is cervical cancer, which is caused by high-risk human papillomavirus (HR HPV). The two viral oncoproteins of HR HPV, E6 and E7, partner with host cell proteins to target oncogenic proteins and pathways. Previously, we have shown HR HPV type 16 E6 (16E6) interacts with the host protein NFX1-123 to target telomerase and cellular immortalization, requiring NFX1-123 to fully upregulate telomerase activity. We now report that NFX1-123 is highly expressed in primary cervical cancers. In vitro, cells expressing 16E6 and overexpressing NFX1-123 have extended active growth, decreased senescence marker staining, and more rapid cell cycling compared to 16E6 expressing cells with endogenous amounts of NFX1-123. These findings were associated with increased telomerase activity and augmented expression of its catalytic subunit, hTERT. In complement, HPV 16 positive cervical cancer cell lines with knocked down NFX1-123 had slowed growth and reduced hTERT over time. In cells that express HR HPV E6, greater expression of NFX1-123 can modify active cellular growth and augment hTERT expression and telomerase activity over time, potentially supporting the initiation and progression of HPV-associated cancers

    HPV type 16 E6 and NFX1-123 Augment JNK Signaling to Mediate Keratinocyte Differentiation and L1 Expression

    The HPV life cycle is differentiation-dependent, with cellular differentiation driving initiation of the late, productive stage of the viral life cycle. Here, we identify a role for the protein NFX1-123 in regulating keratinocyte differentiation and events of the late HPV life cycle. NFX1-123 itself increased with differentiation of epithelial cells. Greater NFX1-123 augmented differentiation marker expression and JNK phosphorylation in differentiating 16E6-expressing human foreskin keratinocytes (16E6 HFKs). This was associated with altered expression of MKK4 and MKK7, upstream kinase regulators of JNK phosphorylation. Modulating levels of NFX1-123 in HPV16-positive W12E cells recapitulated the effects on differentiation markers, JNK phosphorylation, and MKK4/7 seen in 16E6 HFKs. Crucially, levels of NFX1-123 also correlated with expression of L1, the capsid protein of HPV. Altogether, these studies define a role for NFX1-123 in mediating epithelial differentiation through the JNK signaling pathway, potentially linking expression of cellular genes and HPV genes during differentiation

    Rapid Response and Restoration for Coral Reef Injuries in Southeast Florida: Guidelines and Recommendations

    From the time an injury to coral reef resources is reported, a well-coordinated and implemented plan is critical to the success of response and restoration efforts. There are three major plan components, each of which is equally important: (1) the Initial Response period immediately following notification of the incident; (2) the Response period, during which the Responsible Party (RP) is identified, the Trustees and RP carry out their respective responsibilities, a Primary Restoration plan is developed, authorizations and contractors to conduct restoration activities are sought and obtained, and primary restoration activities are conducted; and (3) the Post-Response period, which is largely a monitoring, compensatory restoration/mitigation, and penalty assessment phase that takes place after primary restoration activities are carried out. The guidelines and recommendations presented in this docuemnt were developed to examine reef injury response processes and to facilitate a rapid response to, and the successful restoration of, southeast Florida reefs. The document was developed as part of a Local Action Strategy (LAS) of the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative (SEFCRI) to develop guidelines and recommendations for a rapid response and restoration process for reef injuries in the SEFCRI region. In February 2006, a two day workshop was held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to compile information on existing emergency response processes, identify deficiencies and develop solutions for those processes, and compile information on existing technologies and procedures for triage and the restoration of reef injuries. The first day of the workshop focused on process and policy issues. The second day addressed response, injury and mitigation assessment, restoration and repair, and monitoring. Workshop panelists and attendees included respresentatives from local, state, and federal agencies with proprietary or regulatory authority or jurisdiction over sovereign submerged lands and reef resources located within Florida\u27s waters. Also in attendance were technical and academic experts in the fields of coral reef research, injury assessment, and restoration, as well as marine contractors, private and public attorneys, nongovernmental organizations, and other interested parties. These guidelines and recommendations incorporate information from the combined experience of the workshop attendees, workshop outcomes, published documents, and numerous state and federal regulations, policies, and procedures

    A Local Superlens

    Superlenses enable near-field imaging beyond the optical diffraction limit. However, their widespread implementation in optical imaging technology so far has been limited by large-scale fabrication, fixed lens position, and specific object materials. Here we demonstrate that a dielectric lamella of subwavelength size in all three spatial dimensions behaves as a compact superlens that operates at infrared wavelengths and can be positioned to image any local microscopic area of interest on the sample. In particular, the lamella superlens may be placed in contact with any type of object and therefore enables examination of hard-to-scan samples, for example, with high topography or in liquids, without altering the specimen design. This lamella-based local superlens design is directly applicable to subwavelength light-based technology, such as integrated optics
