Fractal Properties of Robust Strange Nonchaotic Attractors in Maps of Two or More Dimensions
We consider the existence of robust strange nonchaotic attractors (SNA's) in
a simple class of quasiperiodically forced systems. Rigorous results are
presented demonstrating that the resulting attractors are strange in the sense
that their box-counting dimension is N+1 while their information dimension is
N. We also show how these properties are manifested in numerical experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 14 figure
Assessing the effectiveness of business support services in England: evidence from a theory based evaluation
In England, publicly supported advisory services for small firms are organised primarily through the Business Link (BL) network. Based on the programme theory underlying this business support services we develop four propositions and test these empirically using data from a new survey of over 3,000 English small firms. Our empirical results provide a broad validation of the programme theory underlying BL assistance for small firms in England during 2003, and more limited support for its effectiveness. More specifically, we find strong support for the value of BL operators maintaining a high profile as a way of boosting take-up. We also find some support for the approach to market segmentation adopted by BL allowing more intensive assistance to be targeted on younger firms and those with limited liability status. In terms of the outcomes of BL support, and allowing for issues of sample selection, we find no significant effects on growth from âotherâ assistance but do find positive and significant employment growth effects from intensive assistance. This provides partial support for the programme theory assertion that BL support will lead to improvements in business growth performance and stronger support for the proposition that there would be differential outcomes from intensive and other assistance. The positive employment growth outcomes identified here from intensive assistance, even allowing for sample selection, suggest something of an improvement in the effectiveness of the BL network since the late 1990s
Relations between M\"obius and coboundary polynomial
It is known that, in general, the coboundary polynomial and the M\"obius
polynomial of a matroid do not determine each other. Less is known about more
specific cases. In this paper, we will try to answer if it is possible that the
M\"obius polynomial of a matroid, together with the M\"obius polynomial of the
dual matroid, define the coboundary polynomial of the matroid. In some cases,
the answer is affirmative, and we will give two constructions to determine the
coboundary polynomial in these cases.Comment: 12 page
Supersymmetric solutions of PT-/non-PT-symmetric and non-Hermitian Screened Coulomb potential via Hamiltonian hierarchy inspired variational method
The supersymmetric solutions of PT-symmetric and Hermitian/non-Hermitian
forms of quantum systems are obtained by solving the Schrodinger equation for
the Exponential-Cosine Screened Coulomb potential. The Hamiltonian hierarchy
inspired variational method is used to obtain the approximate energy
eigenvalues and corresponding wave functions.Comment: 13 page
Donor states in modulation-doped Si/SiGe heterostructures
We present a unified approach for calculating the properties of shallow
donors inside or outside heterostructure quantum wells. The method allows us to
obtain not only the binding energies of all localized states of any symmetry,
but also the energy width of the resonant states which may appear when a
localized state becomes degenerate with the continuous quantum well subbands.
The approach is non-variational, and we are therefore also able to evaluate the
wave functions. This is used to calculate the optical absorption spectrum,
which is strongly non-isotropic due to the selection rules. The results
obtained from calculations for Si/SiGe quantum wells allow us to
present the general behavior of the impurity states, as the donor position is
varied from the center of the well to deep inside the barrier. The influence on
the donor ground state from both the central-cell effect and the strain arising
from the lattice mismatch is carefully considered.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure

Hierarchical Spherical Model from a Geometric Point of View
A continuous version of the hierarchical spherical model at dimension d=4 is
investigated. Two limit distribution of the block spin variable X^{\gamma},
normalized with exponents \gamma =d+2 and \gamma =d at and above the critical
temperature, are established. These results are proven by solving certain
evolution equations corresponding to the renormalization group (RG)
transformation of the O(N) hierarchical spin model of block size L^{d} in the
limit L to 1 and N to \infty . Starting far away from the stationary Gaussian
fixed point the trajectories of these dynamical system pass through two
different regimes with distinguishable crossover behavior. An interpretation of
this trajectories is given by the geometric theory of functions which describe
precisely the motion of the Lee--Yang zeroes. The large-- limit of RG
transformation with L^{d} fixed equal to 2, at the criticality, has recently
been investigated in both weak and strong (coupling) regimes by Watanabe
\cite{W}. Although our analysis deals only with N=\infty case, it complements

Hadronic Structure in the Decay
We report on a study of the invariant mass spectrum of the hadronic system in
the decay tau- -> pi- pi0 nu_tau. This study was performed with data obtained
with the CLEO II detector operating at the CESR e+ e- collider. We present fits
to phenomenological models in which resonance parameters associated with the
rho(770) and rho(1450) mesons are determined. The pi- pi0 spectral function
inferred from the invariant mass spectrum is compared with data on e+ e- -> pi+
pi- as a test of the Conserved Vector Current theorem. We also discuss the
implications of our data with regard to estimates of the hadronic contribution
to the muon anomalous magnetic moment.Comment: 39 pages postscript, also available through
