PriPeARL: A Framework for Privacy-Preserving Analytics and Reporting at LinkedIn
Preserving privacy of users is a key requirement of web-scale analytics and
reporting applications, and has witnessed a renewed focus in light of recent
data breaches and new regulations such as GDPR. We focus on the problem of
computing robust, reliable analytics in a privacy-preserving manner, while
satisfying product requirements. We present PriPeARL, a framework for
privacy-preserving analytics and reporting, inspired by differential privacy.
We describe the overall design and architecture, and the key modeling
components, focusing on the unique challenges associated with privacy,
coverage, utility, and consistency. We perform an experimental study in the
context of ads analytics and reporting at LinkedIn, thereby demonstrating the
tradeoffs between privacy and utility needs, and the applicability of
privacy-preserving mechanisms to real-world data. We also highlight the lessons
learned from the production deployment of our system at LinkedIn.Comment: Conference information: ACM International Conference on Information

Non-Pauli Effects from Noncommutative Spacetimes
Noncommutative spacetimes lead to nonlocal quantum field theories (qft's)
where spin-statistics theorems cannot be proved. For this reason, and also
backed by detailed arguments, it has been suggested that they get corrected on
such spacetimes leading to small violations of the Pauli principle. In a recent
paper \cite{Pauli}, Pauli-forbidden transitions from spacetime noncommutativity
were calculated and confronted with experiments. Here we give details of the
computation missing from this paper. The latter was based on a spacetime
different from the Moyal plane. We argue that it
quantizes time in units of . Energy is then conserved only mod
. Issues related to superselection rules raised by non-Pauli
effects are also discussed in a preliminary manner.Comment: 15 Pages, 1 Table, Full details and further developments of

Interactive color display of 3-D engineering analysis results
A general approach to three-dimensional postprocessing of engineering analyses is presented. The approach is versatile and may handle the results from a wide range of engineering analysis methods which involve the discretization of continua. To facilitate the understanding of complex three-dimensional numerical models, advanced interactive color postprocessing techniques are introduced. Finite element, finite difference, and boundary element models are evaluated with the prototype postprocessor. The existing color graphics program (POSTPRO3D) was ported to a high-resolution device. Interactive graphic tools were implemented to facilitate qualitative mesh evaluation from a single analysis. A postprocessing environment was design for workstation technology
Entanglement and statistics in Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry
Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry allows one to detect the presence of
entanglement in two-photon input states. The same result holds for
two-particles input states which obey to Fermionic statistics. In the latter
case however anti-bouncing introduces qualitative differences in the
interferometer response. This effect is analyzed in a Gedankenexperiment where
the particles entering the interferometer are assumed to belong to a
one-parameter family of quons which continuously interpolate between the
Bosonic and Fermionic statistics.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; minor editorial changes and new references adde
The chameleon groups of Richard J. Thompson: automorphisms and dynamics
The automorphism groups of several of Thompson's countable groups of
piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the line and circle are computed and it is
shown that the outer automorphism groups of these groups are relatively small.
These results can be interpreted as stability results for certain structures of
PL functions on the circle. Machinery is developed to relate the structures on
the circle to corresponding structures on the line
Obstructive sleep apnea as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus
Preethi Rajan, Harly Greenberg Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine, Hofstra-North Shore LIJ School of Medicine, New Hyde Park, NY, USA Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is independently associated with cardiovascular and cardiometabolic risk in several large epidemiologic studies. OSA leads to several physiologic disturbances such as intermittent hypoxia, sleep fragmentation, and increase in autonomic tone. These disturbances have been associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in animal and human studies. Studies also suggest a bidirectional relationship between OSA and T2DM whereby T2DM itself might contribute to the features of OSA. Moreover, successful treatment of OSA may reduce these risks, although this is controversial. The purpose of this article is to review 1) the links and bidirectional associations between OSA and T2DM; 2) the pathogenic mechanisms that might link these two disease states; 3) the role of continuous positive airway pressure therapy in improving glucose tolerance, sensitivity, and resistance; and 4) the implications for clinical practice.
