Entanglement and statistics in Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry
Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry allows one to detect the presence of
entanglement in two-photon input states. The same result holds for
two-particles input states which obey to Fermionic statistics. In the latter
case however anti-bouncing introduces qualitative differences in the
interferometer response. This effect is analyzed in a Gedankenexperiment where
the particles entering the interferometer are assumed to belong to a
one-parameter family of quons which continuously interpolate between the
Bosonic and Fermionic statistics.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; minor editorial changes and new references adde
Search for exchange-antisymmetric two-photon states
Atomic two-photon J=0 J'=1 transitions are forbidden for
photons of the same energy. This selection rule is related to the fact that
photons obey Bose-Einstein statistics. We have searched for small violations of
this selection rule by studying transitions in atomic Ba. We set a limit on the
probability that photons are in exchange-antisymmetric states:

The stochastic limit in the analysis of the open BCS model
In this paper we show how the perturbative procedure known as {\em stochastic
limit} may be useful in the analysis of the Open BCS model discussed by Buffet
and Martin as a spin system interacting with a fermionic reservoir. In
particular we show how the same values of the critical temperature and of the
order parameters can be found with a significantly simpler approach
Modified Wandzura-Wilczek Relation with the Nachtmann Variable
If one retains M^2/Q^2 terms in the kinematics, the Nachtmann variable \xi
seems to be more appropriate to describe deep inelastic lepton-nucleon
scattering. Up to the first power of M^2/Q^2, a modified Wandzura-Wilczek
relation with respect to \xi was derived. Kinematical correction factors are
given as functions of \xi and Q^2. A comparison of the modified g_2^WW(\xi) and
original g_2^WW(x) with the most recent g_2 data is shown.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, revised version with minor correction
Attraction of Trichogramma Wasps to Butterfly Oviposition-Induced Plant Volatiles Depends on Brassica Species, Wasp Strain and Leaf Necrosis
Within the Brassicaceae, wild as well as crop species are challenged by specialist herbivores including cabbage white butterflies (Pieris spp.). The wild crucifer Brassica nigra responds to oviposition by Pieris butterflies by the synergistic expression of two egg-killing traits. Genotypes that express a hypersensitive response (HR)-like necrosis (direct egg-killing) also emit oviposition-induced plant volatiles (OIPVs) attracting Trichogramma egg parasitoids (indirect egg-killing). This so-called double defense line can result in high butterfly egg mortalities. It remains unknown whether this strategy is unique to B. nigra or more common in Brassica species. To test this, we examined the response of different Trichogramma evanescens lines to OIPVs emitted by B. nigra and three close relatives (Brassica napus, Brassica rapa, and Brassica oleracea). Furthermore, we evaluated whether HR-like necrosis played a role in the attraction toward plant volatiles. Our results show a specificity in wasp attraction to different plant species. Three out of four plant species attracted a specific T. evanescens strain, including the crops B. rapa and B. napus. Parasitoid attraction was positively affected by presence of HR-like necrosis in one plant species. Our findings imply that, despite being a true generalist in terms of host range, T. evanescens shows intraspecific variation during host searching, which should be taken into account when selecting parasitoid lines for biocontrol of certain crops. Finally, we conclude that also crop plants within the Brassicaceae family possess egg-killing traits and can exert the double-defense line which may enable effective selection of egg-killing defense traits by cabbage breeders
Path Integrals for Parastatistics
We demonstrate that parastatistics can be quantized using path integrals by
calculating the generating functionals for time-ordered products of both free
and interacting parabose and parafermi fields in terms of path integrals. We
also give a convenient form of the commutation relations for the Green
components of the parabose and parafermi operators in both the canonical and
path integral formalisms.Comment: typos corrected, references added, some new content. version that has

Generalized Fock Spaces, New Forms of Quantum Statistics and their Algebras
We formulate a theory of generalized Fock spaces which underlies the
different forms of quantum statistics such as ``infinite'', Bose-Einstein and
Fermi-Dirac statistics. Single-indexed systems as well as multi-indexed systems
that cannot be mapped into single-indexed systems are studied. Our theory is
based on a three-tiered structure consisting of Fock space, statistics and
algebra. This general formalism not only unifies the various forms of
statistics and algebras, but also allows us to construct many new forms of
quantum statistics as well as many algebras of creation and destruction
operators. Some of these are : new algebras for infinite statistics,
q-statistics and its many avatars, a consistent algebra for fractional
statistics, null statistics or statistics of frozen order, ``doubly-infinite''
statistics, many representations of orthostatistics, Hubbard statistics and its
variations.Comment: This is a revised version of the earlier preprint: mp_arc 94-43.

Finding an egg in a haystack: variation in chemical cue use by egg parasitoids of herbivorous insects
Egg parasitoids of herbivorous insects use an interplay of short -and long-range chemical cues emitted by hosts and host plants to find eggs to parasitize. Volatile compounds that attract egg parasitoids can be identified via behavioral assays and used to manipulate parasitoid behavior in the field for biological control of herbivorous pests. However, how and when a particular cue will be used varies over the life of an individual, as well as at and below species level. Future research should expand taxonomic coverage to explore variation in chemical cue use in more natural, dynamic settings. More nuanced understanding of the variability of egg parasitoid host-finding strategies will aid in disentangling the underlying genetics and further enhancing biological control
Basic principles of postgrowth annealing of CdTe:Cl ingot to obtain semi-insulating crystals
The process of annealing of a CdTe:Cl ingot during its cooling after growth
was studied. The annealing was performed in two stages: a high-temperature
stage, with an approximate equality of chlorine and cadmium vacancy
concentrations established at the thermodynamic equilibrium between the crystal
and vapors of volatile components, and a low-temperature stage, with charged
defects interacting to form neutral associations. The chlorine concentrations
necessary to obtain semi-insulating crystals were determined for various ingot
cooling rates in the high temperature stage. The dependence of the chlorine
concentration [Cl+Te] in the ingot on the temperature of annealing in the
high-temperature stage was found. The carrier lifetimes and drift mobilities
were obtained in relation to the temperature and cadmium vapor pressure in the
postgrowth annealing of the ingot.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Generalized thermodynamics of q-deformed bosons and fermions
We study the thermostatistics of q-deformed bosons and fermions obeying the
symmetric algebra and show that it can be built on the formalism of q-calculus.
The entire structure of thermodynamics is preserved if ordinary derivatives are
replaced by an appropriate Jackson derivative. In this framework, we derive the
most important thermodynamic functions describing the q-boson and q-fermion
ideal gases in the thermodynamic limit. We also investigate the semi-classical
limit and the low temperature regime and demonstrate that the nature of the
q-deformation gives rise to pure quantum statistical effects stronger than
undeformed boson and fermion particles.Comment: 8 pages, Physical Review E in pres
