The origins of nuclear astrophysics at Caltech
Shortly before the start of World War II, several theoretical
physicists, including Hans Bethe and Carl von Weizsacker, advanced the
idea that the sun derives it energy from nuclear reactions within its
core. C. C. Lauritsen and William Fowler, nuclear physicists at
Caltech's Kellogg Laboratory, were among the first experimentalists to
appreciate the application of nuclear physics to stellar interiors.
Post-war strategies for studying nuclear processes in the stars
included an innovative series of unofficial, weekly seminars with Mt.
Wilson astronomers at director Ira Bowen's house, the testing of
Bethe's carbon cycle in Kellogg, and the collaboration with a diverse
group of scientists ranging from cosmologist Fred Hoyle to astronomers
Margaret and Geoffrey Burbidge. The events leading up to the
publication of the 1957 paper by Fowler, Hoyle, Burbidge, and Burbidge,
in The Reviews of Modern Physics, now regarded as a watershed in the
history of nuclear astrophysics, are discussed. For his work in low-energy
nuclear astrophysics, Fowler won the 1983 Nobel Prize in
physics

Query Expansion of Zero-Hit Subject Searches: Using a Thesaurus in Conjunction with NLP Techniques
The focus of our study is zero-hit queries in keyword subject searches and the effort of increasing recall in these cases by reformulating and, then, expanding the initial queries using an external source of knowledge, namely a thesaurus. To this end, the objectives of this study are twofold. First, we perform the mapping of query terms to the thesaurus terms. Second, we use the matched terms to expand the userās initial query by taking advantage of the thesaurus relations and implementing natural language processing (NLP) techniques. We report on the overall procedure and elaborate on key points and considerations of each step of the process

Notes on a New Dialectology of Montenegrin
The paper presents some observations on the first post-Yugoslav handbook of dialectology focusing on Montenegrin (CĢirgicĢ 2017), which sets criteria for identifying the diacritic features of Montenegrin Å tokavian. In contrast to Yugoslav-era treatments
of the Å tokavian dialect (e.g. IviÄ 1958, Peco 1985), the new handbook individuates Montenegrin and presents it as an organic whole, rather than examining its relationship to the broader South Slavic dialectological context. The task is challenging, given
that there are two distinct dialect areas of Montenegrin. The trend towards describing former-Yugoslav dialect areas in alignment with the new state formations has been noted for Lisacās handbook (Lisac 2003; Greenberg 2004).

Employer\u27s financial aid to employees for education: Are some educational barriers removed?
The aim of adult education, as I see it, is to inspire grown-ups to be something more than they are now and to do their work better than they do it. Its beginning is wherever one finds oneself. It ends only when ambition ceases to function. At its best, it leads to constantly increasing richness of life, better appreciation of what life offers, great satisfaction in the use of mind and body, and better understanding of the rights and duties of one\u27s fellowman. (James E. Russell, 1978) The purpose of this field project was to assess the problems faced by adult learners in the pursuit of a continuing education, and find the factors which lead them on the path to life-long learning or deter them from this pursuit. A review of the literature examined various compromises, solutions, and/or alternatives to the problem. Questionnaires were used to gather data for further in-depth studies of this problem
A Balkanism in Central Europe? Realis vs. Irrealis in Subordinate Clauses in Prekmurje Slovene
The paper examines the distinction between realis- and irrealis-marking complementizers (ka vs. da in the Prekmurje (Pannonian) dialect of Slovene and compares the phenomenon to the same distinction observed in Balkan Sprachbund languages (Albanian, Bulgarian, Modem Greek, Macedonian, Romani, Romanian). Though the phenomenon is indeed synchronically parallel, historically the distinction in Prekmnrje Slovene arose as a result of retentions on the periphery (partially shared with the Carinthian dialects) and not as a result of (erstwhile) contact with languages of the Balkan Sprachbund
