Quantum and Classical in Adiabatic Computation
Adiabatic transport provides a powerful way to manipulate quantum states. By
preparing a system in a readily initialised state and then slowly changing its
Hamiltonian, one may achieve quantum states that would otherwise be
inaccessible. Moreover, a judicious choice of final Hamiltonian whose
groundstate encodes the solution to a problem allows adiabatic transport to be
used for universal quantum computation. However, the dephasing effects of the
environment limit the quantum correlations that an open system can support and
degrade the power of such adiabatic computation. We quantify this effect by
allowing the system to evolve over a restricted set of quantum states,
providing a link between physically inspired classical optimisation algorithms
and quantum adiabatic optimisation. This new perspective allows us to develop
benchmarks to bound the quantum correlations harnessed by an adiabatic
computation. We apply these to the D-Wave Vesuvius machine with revealing -
though inconclusive - results
Four-quark flux distribution and binding in lattice SU(2)
The full spatial distribution of the color fields of two and four static
quarks is measured in lattice SU(2) field theory at separations up to 1 fm at
beta=2.4. The four-quark case is equivalent to a qbar q qbar q system in SU(2)
and is relevant to meson-meson interactions. By subtracting two-body flux tubes
from the four-quark distribution we isolate the flux contribution connected
with the four-body binding energy. This contribution is further studied using a
model for the binding energies. Lattice sum rules for two and four quarks are

Propagators on the two-dimensional light-cone
Light-cone quantization procedure recently presented is applied to the
two-dimensional light-cone theories. By introducing the two distinct null
planes it is shown that the modification term in the two-dimensional massless

IV-VI resonant cavity enhanced photodetectors for the midinfrared
A resonant-cavity enhanced detector operating in the mid-infrared at a
wavelength around 3.6 micron is demonstrated. The device is based on a
narrow-gap lead salt heterostructure grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Below 140
K, the photovoltage clearly shows a single narrow cavity resonance, with a
relative line width of only 2 % at 80 K.Comment: 2 figure

Measuring Active-Sterile Neutrino Oscillations with a Stopped Pion Neutrino Source
The question of the existence of light sterile neutrinos is of great interest
in many areas of particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. Furthermore,
should the MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab confirm the LSND oscillation
signal, then new measurements are required to identify the mechanism
responsible for these oscillations. Possibilities include sterile neutrinos, CP
or CPT violation, variable mass neutrinos, Lorentz violation, and extra
dimensions. In this paper, we consider an experiment at a stopped pion neutrino
source to determine if active-sterile neutrino oscillations with delta-m
greater than 0.1 eV2 can account for the signal. By exploiting stopped pi+
decay to produce a monoenergetic nu_mu source, and measuring the rate of the
neutral current reaction nu_x + 12C -> nu_x +12C* as a function of distance
from the source, we show that a convincing test for active-sterile neutrino
oscillations can be performed.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Does tiny-scale atomic structure exist in the interstellar medium ?
We report on preliminary results from the recent multi-epoch neutral hydrogen
absorption measurements toward three pulsars, B0823+26, B1133+16 and B2016+28,
using the Arecibo telescope. We do not find significant variations in optical
depth profiles over periods of 0.3 and 9--10 yr, or on spatial scales of 10--20
and 70--85 AU. The large number of non detections of the tiny scale atomic
structure suggests that the AU-sized structure is not ubiquitous in the
interstellar medium and could be quite a rare phenomenon.Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters, 5 pages, 2 figure
The Relationship between Cost Analysis and Program Management
Cost analysis if often viewed as applying basic principles and cost methodologies to determine total system cost. These finished estimates then flow into a decision making process and the cost estimator leaves the stage. Reality shows that the cost estimator is actually one of the main contributors to the decision making process. Our introduction to this special issue explores the areas where cost estimating plays a major role in program management in areas beyond the normal program estimate. We have included articles that show the key role estimators can play in source selection strategies and evaluation; cost of delay analysis for management decisions, earned value management methods to predict program costs; decision criteria to rank competing projects that complement traditional cost-based methods; and a new methodology for determining research and development budget profiles
Living with the user: Design drama for dementia care through responsive scripted experiences in the home
Participation in forms of drama and narrative can provoke empathy and creativity in user-centred design processes. In this paper, we expand upon existing methods to explore the potential for responsive scripted experiences that are delivered through the combination of sensors and output devices placed in a home. The approach is being developed in the context of Dementia care, where the capacity for rich user participation in design activities is limited. In this case, a system can act as a proxy for a person with Dementia, allowing designers to gain experiences and insight as to what it is like to provide care for, and live with, this person. Using cultural probes to inform the design of assistive technologies
This paper discusses the practical implications of applying cultural probes to drive the design of assistive technologies. Specifically we describe a study in which a probe was deployed with home-based carers of people with dementia in order to capture critical data and gain insights of integrating the technologies into this sensitive and socially complex design space. To represent and utilise the insights gained from the cultural probes, we created narratives based on the probe data to enhance the design of assistive technologies.This work was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AH/K00266X/1) and RCUK through the Horizon Digital Economy Research grant (EP/G065802/1)
