Simulated Galactic methanol maser distribution to constrain Milky Way parameters
Using trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of masers associated with
massive young stars, the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy (BeSSeL) survey has
reported the most accurate values of the Galactic parameters so far. The
determination of these parameters with high accuracy has a widespread impact on
Galactic and extragalactic measurements. This research is aimed at establishing
the confidence with which such parameters can be determined. This is relevant
for the data published in the context of the BeSSeL survey collaboration, but
also for future observations, in particular from the Southern Hemisphere. In
addition, some astrophysical properties of the masers can be constrained,
notably the luminosity function. We have simulated the population of
maser-bearing young stars associated with Galactic spiral structure, generating
several samples and comparing them with the observed samples used in the BeSSeL
survey. Consequently, we checked the determination of Galactic parameters for
observational biases introduced by the sample selection. Galactic parameters
obtained by the BeSSeL survey do not seem to be biased by the sample selection
used. In fact, the published error estimates appear to be conservative for most
of the parameters. We show that future BeSSeL data and future observations with
Southern arrays will improve the Galactic parameters estimates and smoothly
reduce their mutual correlation. Moreover, by modeling future parallax data
with larger distance and, thus, greater relative uncertainties for a larger
numbers of sources, we found that parallax-distance biasing is an important
issue. Hence, using fractional parallax uncertainty in the weighting of the
motion data is imperative. Finally, the luminosity function for 6.7 GHz
methanol masers was determined, allowing us to estimate the number of Galactic

The low energy expansion of the one-loop type II superstring amplitude
The one-loop four-graviton amplitude in either of the type II superstring
theories is expanded in powers of the external momenta up to and including
terms of order s^4 log s R^4, where R^4 denotes a specific contraction of four
linearized Weyl tensors and s is a Mandelstam invariant. Terms in this series
are obtained by integrating powers of the two-dimensional scalar field theory
propagator over the toroidal world-sheet as well as the moduli of the torus.
The values of these coefficients match expectations based on duality relations

Supersymmetry Constraints on Type IIB Supergravity
Supersymmetry is used to derive conditions on higher derivative terms in the
effective action of type IIB supergravity. Using these conditions, we are able
to prove earlier conjectures that certain modular invariant interactions of
order alpha' **3 relative to the Einstein-Hilbert term are proportional to
eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on the fundamental domain of SL(2,Z). We
also discuss how these arguments generalize to terms of higher order in alpha',

The development of low temperature curing adhesives
An approach for the development of a practical low temperature (293 K-311 K/68 F-100 F) curing adhesive system based on a family of amide/ester resins was studied and demonstrated. The work was conducted on resin optimization and adhesive compounding studies. An improved preparative method was demonstrated which involved the reaction of an amine-alcohol precursor, in a DMF solution with acid chloride. Experimental studies indicated that an adhesive formulation containing aluminum powder provided the best performance when used in conjunction with a commercial primer
Weakly coupled quantum spin singlets in BaCrO
Using single crystal inelastic neutron scattering with and without
application of an external magnetic field and powder neutron diffraction, we
have characterized magnetic interactions in BaCrO. Even without
field, we found that there exist three singlet-to-triplet excitation modes in
scattering plane. Our complete analysis shows that the three modes
are due to spatially anisotropic interdimer interactions that are induced by
local distortions of the tetrahedron of oxygens surrounding the Jahn-Teller
active Cr. The strong intradimer coupling of meV
and weak interdimer interactions ( meV) makes
BaCrO a good model system for weakly-coupled quantum spin
dimers
Domain wall entropy of the bimodal two-dimensional Ising spin glass
We report calculations of the domain wall entropy for the bimodal
two-dimensional Ising spin glass in the critical ground state. The L * L system
sizes are large with L up to 256. We find that it is possible to fit the
variance of the domain wall entropy to a power function of L. However, the
quality of the data distributions are unsatisfactory with large L > 96.
Consequently, it is not possible to reliably determine the fractal dimension of

D-instanton partition functions
Duality arguments are used to determine D-instanton contributions to certain
effective interaction terms of type II supergravity theories in various
dimensions. This leads to exact expressions for the partition functions of the
finite N D-instanton matrix model in d=4 and 6 dimensions that generalize our
previous expression for the case d=10. These results are consistent with the
fact that the Witten index of the T-dual D-particle process should only be
