The infinite family of graphs resulting from this construction includes an edge-regular graph with parameters (24,8,2)(24,8,2). Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at a wavelength of 7 mm. Observations of XZ Tau made with the VLA in 2004 appeared to show a triple-star system, with XZ Tau A resolved into two sources, XZ Tau A and XZ Tau C. The angular separation of XZ Tau A and C (0.09 arcsec) suggested a projected orbital separation of around 13 au with a possible orbital period of around 40 yr. Our follow-up observations were obtained approximately 8 yr later, a fifth of this putative orbital period, and should therefore allow us to constrain the orbital parameters of XZ Tau C, and evaluate the possibility that a recent periastron passage of C coincided with the launch of extended optical outflows from XZ Tau A. Despite improved sensitivity and resolution, as compared with the 2004 observations, we find no evidence of XZ Tau C in our data. Components A and B are detected with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 10; their orbital motions are consistent with previous studies of the system, although the emission from XZ Tau A appears to be weaker. Three possible interpretations are offered: either XZ Tau C is transiting XZ Tau A, which is broadly consistent with the periastron passage hypothesis, or the emission seen in 2004 was that of a transient, or XZ Tau C does not exist. A fourth interpretation, that XZ Tau C was ejected from the system, is dismissed due to the lack of angular momentum redistribution in the orbits of XZ Tau A and XZ Tau B that would result from such an event. Transients are rare but cannot be ruled out in a T Tauri system known to exhibit variable behaviour. Our observations are insufficient to distinguish between the remaining possibilities, at least not until we obtain further VLA observations at a sufficiently later time. A further non-detection would allow us to reject the transit hypothesis, and the periastron passage of XZ Tau C as agent of XZ Tau A's outflows.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    VISSR Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) Research Review

    The VAS, an experimental instrument flown onboard Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), is capable of achieving mutlispectral imagery of atmospheric temperature, water vapor, and cloudiness patterns over short time intervals. In addition, this instrument provides an atmospheric sounding capability from geosynchronous orbit. The VAS demonstration is an effort for evaluating the VAS instrument's performance, and for demonstrating the capabilities of a VAS prototype system to provide useful geosynchronous satellite data for supporting weather forecasts and atmospheric research. The demonstration evaluates the performance of the VAS Instruments on GOES-4-5, and -6, develops research oriented and prototype/operational VAS data processing systems, determines the accuracy of certain basic and derived meteorological parameters that can be obtained from the VAS instrument, and assesses the utility of VAS derived information in analyzing severe weather situations

    Several years of satellite cloud photography were examined to determine to what extent oceanographic phenomena might be revealed through their influence on the local cloud structure. The region of the Peru Current was selected for the study. As anticipated, indications of known oceanographic features including the Peru Current itself and local upwelling centers were noted. Previously unknown features such as an apparent band of warmer water off the Peruvian coast and anomalous patches of calm water in mid-ocean were also found. A seasonal cloud climatology for the Peru Current area was developed. The importance of coordinated studies using satellites, ships and aircraft is emphasized

    Sub-millimeter images of a dusty Kuiper belt around eta Corvi

    We present sub-millimeter and mid-infrared images of the circumstellar disk around the nearby F2V star eta Corvi. The disk is resolved at 850um with a size of ~100AU. At 450um the emission is found to be extended at all position angles, with significant elongation along a position angle of 130+-10deg; at the highest resolution (9.3") this emission is resolved into two peaks which are to within the uncertainties offset symmetrically from the star at 100AU projected separation. Modeling the appearance of emission from a narrow ring in the sub-mm images shows the observed structure cannot be caused by an edge-on or face-on axisymmetric ring; the observations are consistent with a ring of radius 150+-20AU seen at 45+-25deg inclination. More face-on orientations are possible if the dust distribution includes two clumps similar to Vega; we show how such a clumpy structure could arise from the migration over 25Myr of a Neptune mass planet from 80-105AU. The inner 100AU of the system appears relatively empty of sub-mm emitting dust, indicating that this region may have been cleared by the formation of planets, but the disk emission spectrum shows that IRAS detected an additional hot component with a characteristic temperature of 370+-60K (implying a distance of 1-2AU). At 11.9um we found the emission to be unresolved with no background sources which could be contaminating the fluxes measured by IRAS. The age of this star is estimated to be ~1Gyr. It is very unusual for such an old main sequence star to exhibit significant mid-IR emission. The proximity of this source makes it a perfect candidate for further study from optical to mm wavelengths to determine the distribution of its dust.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures.     Cost optimization of offshore wind farm combination with reversible solid oxide cell system producing hydrogen using the PyPSA power system modelling tool

    In the context of reaching the net zero carbon target, the UK has set an ambitious target of having a green hydrogen production capacity of 5 GW by 2030. As part of the EPSRC-funded project on high efficiency reversible solid oxide cells (rSOC) for the integration of offshore renewable energy (ORE) using hydrogen, eight scenarios where hydrogen is combined with offshore renewable energy were identified. A model using the PyPSA power system modelling tool combined with a sensitivity study, investigated optimized rSOC system capacities, hydrogen storage capacities, and subsea cable connection capacities under various combinations of infrastructure cost, rSOC system efficiencies, and electricity prices for one of the scenarios. Preliminary results for a 600 MW wind farm situated 60 km from shore combined with offshore hydrogen production illustrate the impact of electricity price on decision-making in energy dispatch and on optimization of infrastructure of an ORE-rSOC system. Results indicate that high electricity price fluctuations call for large amounts of hydrogen production and storage capacity. Further refinement of input data would make this approach a promising decision-making tool for the use in the design of an ORE-rSOC system
