Probing the Electrostatics of Integer Quantum Hall Edges with Momentum-Resolved Tunnel Spectroscopy
We present measurements of momentum-resolved magneto-tunneling from a
perpendicular two-dimensional (2D) contact into integer quantum Hall (QH) edges
at a sharp edge potential created by cleaved edge overgrowth. Resonances in the
tunnel conductance correspond to coincidences of electronic states of the QH
edge and the 2D contact in energy-momentum space. With this dispersion relation
reflecting the potential distribution at the edge we can directly measure the
band bending at our cleaved edge under the influence of an external voltage
bias. At finite bias we observe significant deviations from the flat-band
condition in agreement with self-consistent calculations of the edge potential

ObjectivesThe long history of the Academy of Dental Materials (ADM) is documented with its strategies (a) to rapidly communicate science among its members, (b) to establish special awards to stimulate new science, and (c) to develop new dental materials scientists.MethodsWe searched the history of the last 35 years of the ADM newsletters, transactions, journals, and officer notes. We document the (a) presidents, (b) meeting history, (c) membership growth, and (d) development of special awards through 2019 with the recent creation of the ADM Marshall Post-Doctoral Award.ResultsThere are 36 years of recent ADM history, 42 international meetings, membership growth to 400 individuals from 15 countries, service of 19 presidents, Paffenbarger annual Awardees since 1989, induction of >200 fellows, and recognition of the first winner of Marshall Post-Doctoral Award in 2018. New directions for recruiting members are suggested. Three potential new thrusts for the organization are presented: artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and intensive member mentoring.SignificanceThese suggestions for the ADM provide a path for the ADM to continue to adapt to the ever changing scientific landscape
The structure of a single sharp quantum Hall edge probed by momentum-resolved tunneling
Momentum resolved magneto-tunnelling spectroscopy is performed at a single
sharp quantum Hall edge. We directly probe the structure of individual integer
quantum Hall (QH) edge modes, and find that an epitaxially overgrown cleaved
edge realizes the sharp edge limit, where the Chklovskii picture relevant for
soft etched or gated edges is no longer valid. The Fermi wavevector in the
probe quantum well probes the real-space position of the QH edge modes, and
reveals inter-channel distances smaller than both the magnetic length and the
Bohr radius. We quantitatively describe the lineshape of principal conductance
peaks and deduce an edge filling factor from their position consistent with the
bulk value. We observe features in the dispersion which are attributed to
fluctuations in the ground energy of the quantum Hall system.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

View the Executive SummaryThe United States has diplomatic relations with 194 independent nations. Of these, none is more important to America than Mexico in terms of trade, investment, tourism, natural resources, migration, energy, and security. In recent years, narco-violence has afflicted Mexico with more than 50,000 drug-related murders since 2007 and some 26,000 men, women, and children missing. President Enrique Peña Nieto has tried to divert national attention from the bloodshed through reforms in energy, education, anti-hunger, health-care, and other areas. Even though the death rate has declined since the chief executive took office on December 1, 2012, other crimes continue to plague his nation. Members of the business community report continual extortion demands; the national oil company PEMEX suffers widespread theft of oil, gas, explosives, and solvents (with which to prepare methamphetamines); hundreds of Central American migrants have shown up in mass graves; and the public identifies the police with corruption and villainy. Washington policymakers, who overwhelmingly concentrate on Asia and the Mideast, would be well-advised to focus on the acute dangers that lie principally below the Rio Grande, but whose deadly avatars are spilling into our nation.https://press.armywarcollege.edu/monographs/1501/thumbnail.jp
Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) software analysis
The Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) System, an extension of the Space Transportation System (STS) operating regime to include higher orbits, orbital plane changes, geosynchronous orbits, and interplanetary trajectories is presented. The IUS software design, the IUS software interfaces with other systems, and the cost effectiveness in software verification are described. Tasks of the IUS discussed include: (1) design analysis; (2) validation requirements analysis; (3) interface analysis; and (4) requirements analysis
Glow Sticks as Effective Bait for Capturing Aquatic Amphibians in Funnel Traps
Funnel traps of various designs have been used to capture adults and larvae of aquatic amphibians (e.g., Buech and Egeland 2002; Richter 1995). Most studies use unbaited funnel traps to capture amphibians while others have used shrimp or salmon eggs (Adams et al. 1997). Light traps and light sticks are commonly used in studies of fish, particularly larvae (Doherty 1987; Marchetti et al. 2004), but have not been widely used to capture amphibians. Glow sticks have been mentioned briefly in the literature as a means to increase capture rates of aquatic amphibians (Smith and Rettig 1996), but no studies have estimated their effectiveness. Dynamics of Nucleation in the Ising Model
Reactive pathways to nucleation in a three-dimensional Ising model at 60% of
the critical temperature are studied using transition path sampling of single
spin flip Monte Carlo dynamics. Analysis of the transition state ensemble (TSE)
indicates that the critical nuclei are rough and anisotropic. The TSE,
projected onto the free energy surface characterized by cluster size, N, and
surface area, S, indicates the significance of other variables in addition to
these two traditional reaction coordinates for nucleation. The transmission
coefficient along N is ~ 0.35, and this reduction of the transmission
coefficient from unity is explained in terms of the stochastic nature of the

Influence of fluoride on the mineralization of collagen via the polymer-induced liquid-precursor (PILP) process.
ObjectiveThe polymer-induced liquid-precursor (PILP) mineralization process has been shown to remineralize artificial dentin lesions to levels consistent with those of native dentin. However, nanoindentation revealed that the moduli of those remineralized lesions were only ∼50% that of native dentin. We hypothesize that this may be due to the PILP process having been previously optimized to obtain high amounts (∼70wt%) of intrafibrillar crystals, but without sufficient interfibrillar mineral, another significant component of dentin.MethodsFluoride was added to the PILP-mineralization of collagen from rat tail tendon at varying concentrations to determine if a better balance of intra- versus inter-fibrillar mineralization could be obtained, as determined by electron microscopy. Nanoindentation was used to determine if fluoridated apatite could improve the mechanical properties of the composites.ResultsFluoride was successfully incorporated into the PILP-mineralization of rat tail tendon and resulted in collagen-mineral composite systems with the mineral phase of hydroxyapatite containing various levels of fluoridation. As the fluoride concentration increased, the crystals became larger and more rod-like, with an increasing tendency to form on the fibril surfaces rather than the interior. Nanomechanical testing of the mineralized tendons revealed that fluoride addition did not increase modulus over PILP mineralization alone. This likely resulted from the separated nature of collagen fibrils that comprise tendon, which does not provide lateral reinforcement and therefore may not be suited for the compressive loads of nanoindentation.SignificanceThis work contributes to the development of minimally invasive approaches to caries treatment by determining if collagen can be functionally mineralized
