Effect of thermal cycling in a Mach 0.3 burner rig on properties and structure of directionally solidified gamma/gamma prime - delta eutectic
Tensile and stress rupture properties at 1040 C of a thermally cycled gamma/gamma prime - delta eutectic were essentially equivalent to the as-grown properties. Tensile strength and rupture life at 760 C appeared to decrease slightly by thermal cycling. Thermal cycling resulted in gamma prime coarsening and Widmanstatten delta precipitation in the gamma phase. An unidentified precipitate, presumably gamma prime, was observed within the delta phase. The eutectic alloy exhibited a high rate of oxidation-erosion weight loss during thermal cycling in the Mach 0.3 burner rig
NRQCD results on the MILC extra coarse ensemble
We present preliminary results using NRQCD to describe heavy quarks on the
MILC 2+1 flavour dynamical extra coarse ensemble. We calculate the spectra of
low lying states in bottomonium to complement earlier results on the finer MILC
ensembles. We then exploit the coarseness of the lattices to calculate charm
propagators using NRQCD. These are used to examine the charmonium spectrum and
to calclate the mass of the using NRQCD. Finally we look breifly at the
and systems using the imporoved staggered formalism to describe the

On the magnitude of spheres, surfaces and other homogeneous spaces
In this paper we define the magnitude of metric spaces using measures rather
than finite subsets as had been done previously and show that this agrees with
earlier work with Leinster in arXiv:0908.1582. An explicit formula for the
magnitude of an n-sphere with its intrinsic metric is given. For an arbitrary
homogeneous Riemannian manifold the leading terms of the asymptotic expansion
of the magnitude are calculated and expressed in terms of the volume and total
scalar curvature of the manifold. In the particular case of a homogeneous
surface the form of the asymptotics can be given exactly up to vanishing terms
and this involves just the area and Euler characteristic in the way conjectured

A comparison of minimum distance and maximum likelihood techniques for proportion estimation
The estimation of mixing proportions P sub 1, P sub 2,...P sub m in the mixture density f(x) = the sum of the series P sub i F sub i(X) with i = 1 to M is often encountered in agricultural remote sensing problems in which case the p sub i's usually represent crop proportions. In these remote sensing applications, component densities f sub i(x) have typically been assumed to be normally distributed, and parameter estimation has been accomplished using maximum likelihood (ML) techniques. Minimum distance (MD) estimation is examined as an alternative to ML where, in this investigation, both procedures are based upon normal components. Results indicate that ML techniques are superior to MD when component distributions actually are normal, while MD estimation provides better estimates than ML under symmetric departures from normality. When component distributions are not symmetric, however, it is seen that neither of these normal based techniques provides satisfactory results
Forced-flow once-through boilers
A compilation and review of NASA-sponsored research on boilers for use in spacecraft electrical power generation systems is presented. Emphasis is on the heat-transfer and fluid-flow problems. In addition to space applications, much of the boiler technology is applicable to terrestrial and marine uses such as vehicular power, electrical power generation, vapor generation, and heating and cooling. Related research areas are discussed such as condensation, cavitation, line and boiler dynamics, the SNAP-8 project (Mercury-Rankine cycle), and conventional terrestrial boilers (either supercritical or gravity-assisted liquid-vapor separation types). The research effort was directed at developing the technology for once-through compact boilers with high heat fluxes to generate dry vapor stably, without utilizing gravity for phase separations. A background section that discusses, tutorially, the complex aspects of the boiling process is presented. Discussions of tests on alkali metals are interspersed with those on water and other fluids on a phenomenological basis
Kinetics of the reduction of metalloproteins by chromous ion
The reduction of Cu(330) in Rhus vernicifera laccase by chromous ion is 30% faster than reduction of Cu(614) at room temperature [pH 4.8, µ = 0.1 (NaCl)], and two parallel first-order paths, attributed to heterogeneity of the protein, are observed at both wavelengths. The reactions of stellacyanin, spinach and French-bean plastocyanins, and cytochrome c with chromous ion under similar conditions are faster than that with laccase by factors of 102 to 104, and are first order in protein concentration. Comparison of rates and activation parameters for the reduction of "blue" copper in laccase, stellacyanin, and the two plastocyanins indicates that reduction of the Cu(614) site in laccase may occur by intramolecular electron transfer from one of the Cu(330) sites. Our value of ΔH (17.4 kcal/mol) for the chromous ion reduction of cytochrome c is consistent with a mechanism in which major conformational changes in the protein must accompany electron transfer
Strong latitudinal shear in the shallow convection zone of a rapidly rotating A-star
We have derived the mean broadening profile of the star V102 in the region of
the open cluster IC4665 from high resolution spectroscopy. At a projected
equatorial rotation velocity of vsini = (105 +- 12)km/s we find strong
deviation from classical rotation. We discuss several scenarios, the most
plausible being strong differential rotation in latitudinal direction. For this
scenario we find a difference in angular velocity of DeltaOmega = 3.6 +- 0.8
rad/d (DeltaOmega/Omega = 0.42 +- 0.09). From the Halpha line we derive a
spectral type of A9 and support photometric measurements classifying IC4665
V102 as a non-member of IC4665. At such early spectral type this is the
strongest case of differential rotation observed so far. Together with three
similar stars, IC4665 V102 seems to form a new class of objects that exhibit
extreme latitudinal shear in a very shallow convective envelope.Comment: accepted for A&A Letter
Social indicators of the Aboriginal population of Australia
This paper presents social indicators of the Aboriginal population in the context of the rapid demographic change that has taken place in the population. The paper identifies the problem of Aboriginal data, the fuzziness of the definition of Aboriginality, the non-utility of a static population structure analysis as well as arguments over the exact size of the Aboriginal population in arriving at meaningful social indicators of the population. This paper develops an analytical framework within which Aboriginal social indicators can be analysed by adopting a dynamic view of population change in which the consequences of the massive demographic change that has taken place over the last three decades are evaluated over a demographic time window covering the period 1981-2001.
The analysis has arrived at important social indicators; chief among them are the changing age-sex structure of the Aboriginal population, the rapid growth of persons in young and middle adulthood ages, and the accelerating growth of families and households. The rapid growth of persons in young and middle adulthood ages is reflected in declining Aboriginal employment indicators, while the growth of families and households is reflected in rising new demand for housing. The study also has documented substantial differences in Aboriginal social indicators by location of residence; and in particular, has found out that the relative size of the Aboriginal component of localities/communities is inversely related to the index of economic resources. The policy relevance of the study is that Aboriginal policy programs and initiatives have to address the new evolving population structures, and thus the proposed analytical framework and the findings of the study should provide valuable information for charting directions for new policy initiatives and programs
