Stratosphere-troposphere transport in a numerical simulation of midlatitude convection
The transport of stratospheric air deep into the troposphere via convection is
investigated numerically using the UK Met Office Unified Model. A convective system
that formed on 27 June 2004 near southeast England, in the vicinity an upper level
potential vorticity anomaly and a lowered tropopause, provides the basis for analysis.
Transport is diagnosed using a stratospheric tracer that can either be passed through or
withheld from the modelās convective parameterization scheme. Three simulations are
performed at increasingly finer resolutions, with horizontal grid lengths of 12, 4, and 1 km.
In the 12 and 4 km simulations, tracer is transported deeply into the troposphere by the
parameterized convection. In the 1 km simulation, for which the convective
parameterization is disengaged, deep transport is still accomplished but with a much
smaller magnitude. However, the 1 km simulation resolves stirring along the tropopause
that does not exist in the coarser simulations. In all three simulations, the concentration of
the deeply transported tracer is small, three orders of magnitude less than that of the
shallow transport near the tropopause, most likely because of the efficient dilution of
parcels in the lower troposphere

The National Eclipse Weather Experiment: an assessment of citizen scientist weather observations
The National Eclipse Weather Experiment (NEWEx) was a citizen science project designed to assess the effects of the 20 March 2015 partial solar eclipse on the weather over the United Kingdom (UK). NEWEx had two principal objectives: to provide a spatial network of meteorological observations across the UK to aid the investigation of eclipse induced weather changes; and to develop a nationwide public engagement activity based participation of citizen scientists. In total NEWEx collected 15606 observations of air temperature, cloudiness, and wind speed and direction from 309 locations across the UK, over a 3 hour window spanning the eclipse period. The headline results were processed in near real-time, immediately published on-line,
and featured in UK national press articles on the day of the eclipse. Here we describe the technical development of NEWEx and how the observations provided by the citizen scientists were analysed. By comparing the results of the NEWEx analyses with results from other investigations of the same eclipse using different observational networks, including measurements from the University of Readingās Atmospheric Observatory, we demonstrate that NEWEx provided a fair representation of the change in the UK meteorological conditions throughout the eclipse. Despite the simplicity of the approach adopted, robust reductions in both temperature and wind speed during the eclipse were observed

Modulation of precipitation by conditional symmetric instability release
Although many theoretical and observational studies have investigated the mechanism of conditional symmetric instability (CSI) release and associated it with mesoscale atmospheric phenomena such as frontal precipitation bands, cloud heads in rapidly developing extratropical cyclones and sting jets, its climatology and contribution to precipitation have not been extensively documented. The aim of this paper is to quantify the contribution of CSI release, yielding slantwise convection, to climatological precipitation accumulations for the North Atlantic and western Europe. Case studies reveal that CSI release could be common along cold fronts of mature extratropical cyclones and the North Atlantic storm track is found to be a region with large CSI according to two independent CSI metrics. Correlations of CSI with accumulated precipitation are also large in this region and CSI release is inferred to be occurring about 20% of the total time over depths of over 1km. We conclude that the inability of current global weather forecast and climate prediction models to represent CSI release (due to insufficient resolution yet lack of subgrid parametrization schemes) may lead to errors in precipitation distributions, particularly in the region of the North Atlantic storm track

The utility of convection-permitting ensembles for the prediction of stationary convective bands
This study examines convection-permitting numerical simulations of four cases of terrain-locked quasi-stationary convective bands over the UK. For each case, a 2.2-km grid-length 12-member ensemble and 1.5-km grid-length deterministic forecast are analyzed, each with two different initialization times. Object-based verification is applied to determine whether the simulations capture the structure, location, timing, intensity and duration of the observed precipitation. These verification diagnostics reveal that the forecast skill varies greatly between the four cases. Although the deterministic and ensemble simulations captured some aspects of the precipitation correctly in each case, they never simultaneously captured all of them satisfactorily. In general, the models predicted banded precipitation accumulations at approximately the correct time and location, but the precipitating structures were more cellular and less persistent than the coherent quasi-stationary bands that were observed. Ensemble simulations from the two different initialization times were not significantly different, which suggests a potential benefit of time-lagging subsequent ensembles to increase ensemble size. The predictive skill of the upstream larger-scale flow conditions and the simulated precipitation on the convection-permitting grids were strongly correlated, which suggests that more accurate forecasts from the parent ensemble should improve the performance of the convection-permitting ensemble nested within it
