    Spectroscopy of the variable K-dwarf UNSW-V-760: is it a pre-main-sequence pulsator?

    The star UNSW-V-760 is a known variable, showing both flares and two non-sinusoidal periodicities. Availability of high signal-to-noise spectra reported in this paper has enabled a revision of the spectral type of this star to K3 IV-Vk. The star is a very rapid rotator (v sin i ∼ 140 km s−1), and the abundance of lithium appears to be enhanced. 48 radial velocity measurements were obtained over the course of three successive nights. These may show the same two frequencies detected photometrically, but there is some uncertainty in the interpretation. Application of pulsation theory suggests that photometric frequencies could be explained as low pulsation modes, but an excitation mechanism remains to be found.Department of HE and Training approved lis

    Galactic S Stars: Investigations of Color, Motion, and Spectral Features

    Known bright S stars, recognized as such by their enhanced s-process abundances and C/O ratio, are typically members of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) or the red giant branch (RGB). Few modern digital spectra for these objects have been published, from which intermediate resolution spectral indices and classifications could be derived. For published S stars we find accurate positions using the Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and use the FAST spectrograph of the Tillinghast reflector on Mt. Hopkins to obtain the spectra of 57 objects. We make available a digital S star spectral atlas consisting of 14 spectra of S stars with diverse spectral features. We define and derive basic spectral indices that can help distinguish S stars from late-type (M) giants and carbon stars. We convolve all our spectra with the SDSS bandpasses, and employ the resulting gri magnitudes together with 2MASS JHK mags to investigate S star colors. S stars have colors similar to carbon and M stars, and are therefore difficult to distinguish by color alone. Using near and mid-infrared colors from IRAS and AKARI, we identify some of the stars as intrinsic (AGB) or extrinsic (with abundances enhanced by past mass-transfer). We also use V band and 2MASS magnitudes to calculate a temperature index for stars in the sample. We analyze the proper motions and parallaxes of our sample stars to determine upper and lower limit absolute magnitudes and distances, and confirm that most are probably giants.Comment: 11 pages.     Tuning hole mobility in InP nanowires

    Transport properties of holes in InP nanowires were calculated considering electron-phonon interaction via deformation potentials, the effect of temperature and strain fields. Using molecular dynamics, we simulate nanowire structures, LO-phonon energy renormalization and lifetime. The valence band ground state changes between light- and heavy-hole character, as the strain fields and the nanowire size are changed. Drastic changes in the mobility arise with the onset of resonance between the LO-phonons and the separation between valence subbands.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Current Studies in Japanese Law

    Over the past fifteen years there has been a remarkable growth in the study of Japanese law in the United States. The foundation was laid during the late 1950\u27s when the Harvard-Michigan-Stanford program brought together Japanese legal specialists and their American counterparts for study and research. At the end of this program a major conference was held, and the resulting publication, Law in Japan, continues to serve as a point of departure in descriptive studies of Japanese law. During the 1960\u27s interest in Japan continued to develop among law faculty members, but an even more important development was the increase in the number of students coming to the law school who already had some Japanese language and area training. With these students as a nucleus, a few law schools have begun to offer work in Japanese law. Some of these courses have been taught by visiting Japanese professors, and a few are taught regularly by Americans trained in Japanese law. At the same time, the Japanese legal system has been studied by many non-lawyers, such as political scientists, sociologists, and anthropologists. Constitutional law, family law, and criminal law have been analyzed as political and social phenomena in studies which have gone beyond legal rules to origins and practices. The four papers in this volume represent these various developments. One is by a visiting scholar, two were written by students in a course dealing with Japanese law, and one is part of a doctoral thesis in anthropology.https://repository.law.umich.edu/books/1108/thumbnail.jp

    Identification of novel inhibitors of the type I interferon induction pathway using cell-based high-throughput screening

    Production of type I interferon (IFN) is an essential component of the innate immune response against invading pathogens. However, its production must be tightly regulated to avoid harmful effects. Compounds that modulate the IFN response are potentially valuable for a variety of applications due to IFNs beneficial and detrimental roles. We developed and executed a cell-based high-throughput screen (HTS) targeting components that participate in and/or regulate the IRF3 and NF-κB branches of the IFN-induction pathway. The assay detects activation of the IFN-induction pathway via an eGFP reporter gene under the control of the IFN-β promoter and was optimized, miniaturized and demonstrated suitable for HTS as robust Z’ factor scores of >0.6 were consistently achieved. A diversity screening set of 15,667 small molecules was assayed and two novel hit compounds validated that specifically inhibit the IFN- induction pathway. We demonstrate that one of these compounds acts at, or upstream of IRF3 phosphorylation. A second cell-based assay to detect activation of the IFN- signaling (Jak-Stat) pathway via an eGFP reporter gene under the control of an ISRE containing MxA promoter also performed well (robust Z’ factor = >0.7), and may therefore be similarly used to identify small molecules that modulate the IFN-signaling pathway.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
