Places and Belongings: Conjugality between Angola and Portugal

In the context of contemporary studies of families and transnational lives, this paper sets out the emergence of new forms of conjugality among heterosexual couples living apart (one in Portugal, the other in Angola). Considering the importance of gender stratification we seek to understand how the construction of masculinity is reformulated in the couple when the man migrates to the other country to find work. When a conjugal pair separates as a result of the migration of one person, fluid forms of conjugality arise, demanding realignment of gender roles. The forms of conjugality that are emerging today can also be studied from the point of view of Post-colonialism Theory – seen in the continuities and ruptures in Portugal’s colonial imagination, the gender-role building, and the migrations between the two countries. Mobilidade, família e género: Uma abordagem transnacional

Mobility in transnational spaces modifies the relationships between individuals and within families and households in both sending and host countries. The impacts of gender on individuals‟ behaviour essentially establish the long-term effects migration brings in their lives. In this paper, after presenting the theoretical grounding of the research group “transnational lives, mobility and gender” (TLM&G)2, I will discuss the epistemological implications and choices involved in the methods of data collection in transnational mobility studies. I will conclude pointing to the necessity of rethinking mobility and family studies in a transnational gendered perspective through the adaptation of methodological instruments to the reality of contemporary human mobility. The general aim of the TLM&G research group is to explore the impact of mobility on individuals‟ lives, considering family and household relationships, and taking into account how integration experiences are affected by gender representations and selfperceptions. From the academic point of view, this research group will reinforce the sociological approach and the scientific background in this area in European and African countries, with a potential impact on transnationalism, migration, and family studies. Looking at mobility as a human right and opportunity for individuals and families, the aim is to contribute to a renewed theoretical approach on the differentiated conditions pertaining to migration access in the origin society as well as a differentiated scope of social integration in the host society.A mobilidade em espaços transnacionais modifica as relações entre indivíduos e dentro da família, tanto nos países de origem como nos países de imigração. Os impactos de género no comportamento dos indivíduos determinam os efeitos de longo prazo que a migração traz nas suas vidas. Neste artigo, após a apresentação dos fundamentos teóricos do grupo de investigação "vidas transnacionais, mobilidade e género" (TLM & G)1, vou discutir as implicações epistemológicas e as escolhas envolvidas nos métodos de recolha de dados nos estudos da mobilidade transnacional. Concluo apontando para a necessidade de repensar a mobilidade e os estudos da família, numa perspectiva transnacional que considere o género dos indivíduos, através da adaptação dos instrumentos metodológicos à realidade da mobilidade humana contemporânea. O objetivo geral do grupo de investigação TLM & G é explorar o impacto da mobilidade na vida dos indivíduos, considerando as relações familiares e domésticas, e tendo em conta a forma como as experiências de integração são afectadas pelas representações de género e pela sua auto-percepção. Do ponto de vista académico, este grupo de investigação irá reforçar a abordagem sociológica e a formação científica nesta área quer nos países europeus quer nos países africanos, com um impacto potencial sobre o transnacionalismo, a migração e os estudos da família. Olhando para a mobilidade como um direito humano e uma oportunidades para os indivíduos e as famílias, o objetivo é contribuir para uma abordagem teórica renovada sobre as condições diferenciadas do acesso à migração na sociedade de origem, bem como no espaço diferenciado de integração social na sociedade de imigração

Mobility and Family in Transnational Space

This book brings together a range of papers on transnational lives, mobility and gender studies from various disciplinary perspectives and geographical contexts, including European, African and American countries. The thirteen contributions to the volume provide insights into transnational migration and family issues, offering a renewed theoretical approach to the differing conditions in migration access in origin societies and the scope of social inclusion in the receiving countries. The diversity of the authors’ backgrounds and the range of geographical contexts allow a wider understanding of the family in the transnational space, one that considers mobility as a developmental opportunity for individuals, whose consequences in the contemporary world have not yet been sufficiently studied

Economia Informal em Rede: trocas económicas e complexidade social

Partindo das realidades empíricas de Cabo Verde e diásporas, este texto explora, até certo ponto, as limitações heurísticas de certas noções sugeridas pela mainstream do modelo neoliberal da economia sobre o «informal» em África. O texto debruça-se sobre diferentes dimensões, espaços e protagonistas de práticas de economia informal em rede. As repercussões identitárias das dinâmicas destas redes entre os cabo-verdianos, apreendidas através da observação de certas formas de sociabilidade dos actores sociais considerados, são igualmente exploradas.Based on the empirical realities of Cape Verde and some of its Diasporas, this article explores, to a certain extent, the heuristic limitations of certain notions suggested by the mainstream of the neoliberal economy model concerning the so called «informal economy» in Africa. The text deals with different dimensions, spaces and protagonists of practices of the informal economic networks. The identitarian repercussions of the dynamics of these networks among Capeverdians, apprehended through the observation of certain forms of socialibility of these social actors are also explored

Práticas, formas e solidariedades da integração de jovens de origem angolana no mercado de trabalho em Portugal

Neste artigo são apresentados alguns dos dados recolhidos através da aplicação de um inquérito a 200 jovens (18-30 anos) de origem angolana a viver em Portugal. O questionário integrado para medir o capital social foi adaptado a partir de um estudo do Banco Mundial (Grootaert et al., 2003) ao contexto migratório português no âmbito do projecto «Angola em Movimento». Nos dados recolhidos procuram-se pistas de reflexão e discussão sobre as formas assumidas pelas solidariedades e a pela confiança que fazem funcionar as redes sociais, familiares e étnicas que apoiam os imigrantes no acesso ao mercado de trabalho em Portugal

Introdução teórica e metodológica ao projecto «Angola em Movimento: sociabilidades e trocas económicas informais»

O artigo introduz as principais linhas teóricas e metodológicas, assim como os objectivos do projecto «Angola em Movimento». O âmbito do debate teórico situa-se em torno das características assumidas pelo comércio informal na sociedade globalizada. A análise é feita tendo em conta os padrões de mobilidade das pessoas e das mercadorias que circulam em redes transfronteiriças e transnacionais em quatro regiões angolanas envolvidas como estudos de caso (Namibe, Cunene, Luanda-Benguela-Huambo e Lisboa como país da diáspora angolana)
