GALS for Bursty Data Transfer based on Clock Coupling
In this paper we introduce a novel burst-mode GALS technique. The goal of this technique is improving the performance of the GALS approach for systems with predominantly bursty data transfer. This new technique has been used to implement a GALS-based version of a hardware accelerator of a 60 GHz OFDM baseband processor. The simulation results show a significant performance improvement in comparison with a classical implementation of GALS using pausible clocking. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

What Does an Exemplary Middle School Mathematics Teacher Look Like? The Use of a Professional Development Rubric
A School University Research Network (SURN) committee composed of current mathematics teachers, central office math supervisors, building administrators, mathematicians, and mathematics educators researched numerous sources regarding best practices in mathematics instruction. The resulting professional development rubric synthesizes their findings and can serve a professional development role by providing teachers and administrators with a tool to develop clarity and consensus on best mathematics instructional practices, and how these practices are implemented in the classroom. It is also being used as a tool for cooperating teachers in their supervision of student teachers and as a reflective method for self-evaluation
Highly Enhanced Concentration and Stability of Reactive Ce^3+ on Doped CeO_2 Surface Revealed In Operando
Trivalent cerium ions in CeO_2 are the key active species in a wide range of catalytic and electro-catalytic reactions. We employed ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to quantify simultaneously the concentration of the reactive Ce^3+ species on the surface and in the bulk of Sm-doped CeO_2(100) in hundreds of millitorr of H2–H2O gas mixtures. Under relatively oxidizing conditions, when the bulk cerium is almost entirely in the 4+ oxidation state, the surface concentration of the reduced Ce^3+ species can be over 180 times the bulk concentration. Furthermore, in stark contrast to the bulk, the surface’s 3+ oxidation state is also highly stable, with concentration almost independent of temperature and oxygen partial pressure. Our thermodynamic measurements reveal that the difference between the bulk and surface partial molar entropies plays a key role in this stabilization. The high concentration and stability of reactive surface Ce^3+ over wide ranges of temperature and oxygen partial pressure may be responsible for the high activity of doped ceria in many pollution-control and energy-conversion reactions, under conditions at which Ce^3+ is not abundant in the bulk
Crohn's versus Cancer: Comparison of Functional and Surgical Outcomes after Right-Sided Resections.
The objective of this study was to compare functional and surgical outcomes of patients undergoing ileocecal resection for Crohn's disease (CD) to patients undergoing oncological right colectomy.
Retrospective single-center cohort study including consecutive patients undergoing right colectomy for adenocarcinoma (oncological resection) or CD (mesentery-sparing resection) between July 2011 and November 2017. Outcome measures were pathological details (lymph node yield), postoperative recovery (pain levels, return to flatus and stool, intake of fluids, weight change, and mobilization), and early (30-day) outcomes (surgical/medical complications, hospital stay, readmissions).
A total of 195 patients (153 [78%] with cancer and 42 [22%] with CD) were included. Overall compliance with the institutional enhanced recovery protocol was comparable between the 2 groups (compliance ≥70%: 60% in CD patients vs. 62% in cancer, p = 0.458). The adenocarcinoma group had a larger lymph node yield than the CD group (26 ± 13 vs. 2.4 ± 5, respectively, p < 0.001). While the CD group experienced significantly more pain (3.7 ± 1.9/10 vs. 2.8 ± 2.5/10, p = 0.007, patients requiring opioids: 65 vs. 28%, p = 0.001), return of flatus (2.3 ± 1.2 days vs. 2.4 ± 2.8 days, p = 0.642) and stool (4.1 ± 6.0 vs. 3.0 ± 1.8 days, p = 0.292) was no different in both groups. No difference was observed regarding postoperative complications, length of stay, and readmission rate.
This study revealed no differences in both functional and surgical outcomes in CD and cancer patients undergoing mesentery-sparing or formal oncological right colectomy, respectively
Timing, diagnosis, and treatment of surgical site infections after colonic surgery: prospective surveillance of 1263 patients
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are the most frequent complication after colorectal surgery and have a major impact on length of stay and costs.
To analyse the incidence, timing, and treatment of SSIs within 30 days after colonic surgery.
This was a quality improvement project through retrospective analysis of consecutive colonic surgeries between February 2012 and October 2017 at Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV). SSIs were prospectively assessed by an independent national surveillance programme (www.swissnoso.ch) up to 30 postoperative days. Treatment strategies including drainage of infection (direct wound opening or percutaneous) and surgical management were reviewed.
The study cohort included 1263 patients with 532 procedures (42%) performed as emergencies. SSIs were observed in 271 patients (21%), occurring at median postoperative day (POD) 9 (interquartile range (IQR): 4-16). Specifically, 53 (4%) were superficial incisional, 65 (5%) deep incisional, and 153 (12%) organ space infections (anastomotic insufficiency included). Superficial incisional SSI occurred at a median of POD 10.5 (IQR: 7-15), deep incisional at a median of POD 10 (8-15) and organ space at a median of POD 8 (5-11). Diagnosis was performed post discharge in 64 cases (24%). Whereas 47% of organ space infections were detected by POD 7, this rate was only 26% for superficial and deep incisional infections (P = 0.003). Surgical management was necessary in 133 cases (49%), and the remaining cases were managed by drainage without general anaesthesia (138 cases, 51%).
Organ space infections occurred early in the postoperative course, whereas incisional infections were mostly detected post discharge over the entire 30-day observation period, emphasizing the importance of proper follow-up using a systematic, complete and independent surveillance programme
An embedding scheme for the Dirac equation
An embedding scheme is developed for the Dirac Hamiltonian H. Dividing space
into regions I and II separated by surface S, an expression is derived for the
expectation value of H which makes explicit reference to a trial function
defined in I alone, with all details of region II replaced by an effective
potential acting on S and which is related to the Green function of region II.
Stationary solutions provide approximations to the eigenstates of H within I.
The Green function for the embedded Hamiltonian is equal to the Green function
for the entire system in region I. Application of the method is illustrated for
the problem of a hydrogen atom in a spherical cavity and an Au(001)/Ag/Au(001)
sandwich structure using basis sets that satisfy kinetic balance.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
A Dissipative-Particle-Dynamics Model for Simulating Dynamics of Charged Colloid
A mesoscopic colloid model is developed in which a spherical colloid is
represented by many interacting sites on its surface. The hydrodynamic
interactions with thermal fluctuations are taken accounts in full using
Dissipative Particle Dynamics, and the electrostatic interactions are simulated
using Particle-Particle-Particle Mesh method. This new model is applied to
investigate the electrophoretic mobility of a charged colloid under an external
electric field, and the influence of salt concentration and colloid charge are
systematically studied. The simulation results show good agreement with
predictions from the electrokinetic theory.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the proceedings of High Performance

Self-similarity of Mean Flow in Pipe Turbulence
Based on our previous modified log-wake law in turbulent pipe ‡flows, we invent two compound similarity numbers (Y;U), where Y is a combination of the inner variable y+ and outer variable , and U is the pure exect of the wall. The two similarity numbers can well collapse mean velocity profile data with different moderate and large Reynolds numbers into a single universal profile. We then propose an arctangent law for the buffer layer and a general log law for the outer region in terms of (Y;U). From Milikan’s maximum velocity law and the Princeton superpipe data, we derive the von Kármán constant = 0:43 and the additive constant B=6. Using an asymptotic matching method, we obtain a self-similarity law that describes the mean velocity profile from the wall to axis; and embeds the linear law in the viscous sublayer, the quartic law in the bursting sublayer, the classic log law in the overlap, the sine-square wake law in the wake layer, and the parabolic law near the pipe axis. The proposed arctangent law, the general log law and the self-similarity law have been compared with the high-quality data sets, with diffrent Reynolds numbers, including those from the Princeton superpipe, Loulou et al., Durst et al., Perry et al., and den Toonder and Nieuwstadt. Finally, as an application of the proposed laws, we improve the McKeon et al. method for Pitot probe displacement correction, which can be used to correct the widely used Zagarola and Smits data set
