    X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigation of the mixed anion GaSb/InAs heterointerface

    X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to measure levels of anion cross-incorporation and to study interface formation for the mixed anion GaSb/lnAs heterojunction. Anion cross-incorporation was measured in 20 Å thick GaSb layers grown on lnAs, and 20 Å thick InAs layers grown on GaSb for cracked and uncracked sources. It was found that significantly less anion cross-incorporation occurs in structures grown with cracked sources. Interface formation was investigated by studying Sb soaks of InAs surfaces and As soaks of GaSb surfaces as a function of cracker power and soak time. Exchange of the group V surface atoms was found to be an increasing function of both cracker power and soak time. We find that further optimization of current growth parameters may be possible by modifying the soak time used at interfaces

    Study of interface asymmetry in InAs–GaSb heterojunctions

    We present reflection high energy electron diffraction, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy and x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies of the abruptness of InAs–GaSb interfaces. We find that the interface abruptness depends on growth order: InAs grown on GaSb is extended, while GaSb grown on InAs is more abrupt. We first present observations of the interfacial asymmetry, including measurements of band alignments as a function of growth order. We then examine more detailed studies of the InAs–GaSb interface to determine the mechanisms causing the extended interface. Our results show that Sb incorporation into the InAs overlayer and As exchange for Sb in the GaSb underlayer are the most likely causes of the interfacial asymmetry

    Using ACIS on the Chandra X-ray Observatory as a particle radiation monitor

    The Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) is one of two focal-plane instruments on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. During initial radiation-belt passes, the exposed ACIS suffered significant radiation damage from trapped soft protons scattering off the x-ray telescope's mirrors. The primary effect of this damage was to increase the charge-transfer inefficiency (CTI) of the ACIS 8 front-illuminated CCDs. Subsequently, the Chandra team implemented procedures to remove the ACIS from the telescope's focus during high-radiation events: planned protection during radiation-belt transits; autonomous protection triggered by an on-board radiation monitor; and manual intervention based upon assessment of space-weather conditions. However, as Chandra's multilayer insulation ages, elevated temperatures have reduced the effectiveness of the on-board radiation monitor for autonomous protection. Here we investigate using the ACIS CCDs themselves as a radiation monitor. We explore the 10-year database to evaluate the CCDs' response to particle radiation and to compare this response with other radiation data and environment models.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures.     Remote measurements of ozone, water vapor and liquid water content, and vertical profiles of temperature in the lower troposphere

    Several advanced atmospheric remote sensing systems developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory were demonstrated under various field conditions to determine how useful they would be for general use by the California Air Resources Board and local air quality districts. One of the instruments reported on is the Laser Absorption Spectrometer (LAS). It has a pair of carbon dioxide lasers with a transmitter and receiver and can be flown in an aircraft to measure the column abundance of such gases as ozone. From an aircraft, it can be used to rapidly survey a large region. The LAS is usually operated from an aircraft, although it can also be used at a fixed location on the ground. Some tests were performed with the LAS to measure ozone over a 2-km horizontal path. Another system reported on is the Microwave Atmospheric Remote Sensing System (MARS). It is tuned to microwave emissions from water vapor, liquid water, and oxygen molecules (for atmospheric temperature). It can measure water vapor and liquid water in the line-of-sight, and can measure the vertical temperature profile

    The surface composition of two samples from the highly shocked, glass-coated lunar basalt (12054) and from four glass-coated fragments from the 1-2 mm (14161) fines were examined by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy to determine whether the agglutination process itself is responsible for the difference between their surface and bulk compositions. Auger electron spectroscopy of glass balls from the 15425 and 74001 fines were analyzed to understand the nature, extent, and behavior of volatile phases associated with lunar volcanism. Initial results indicate that (1) volatiles, in the outer few atomic layers sampled, vary considerably from ball to ball; (2) variability over the surface of individual balls is smaller; (3) the dominant volatiles on the balls are S and Zn; and (4) other volatiles commonly observed are P, Cl, and K

    Older adults' evaluations of the standard and modified pedometer-based Green Prescription

    INTRODUCTION: The Green Prescription is a primary care programme designed to increase physical activity in individuals with low activity levels. Older adults tend to engage in insufficient physical activity to obtain health-related gain. AIM: To examine participants’ ratings of the Healthy Steps intervention and to assess how participants rated the use of a pedometer-based Green Prescription in aiding their physical activity. METHODS: In total, 330 community-dwelling older adults who have low levels of activity were randomised to receive either a standard time-based Green Prescription or a modified pedometer-based Green Prescription. Post-intervention, 259 participants completed the participant evaluation questionnaire via postal survey. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Chi-squared analyses. RESULTS: The standard components of the Green Prescription (general practitioner consultations and telephone counselling) received similar and higher ratings across both allocation groups than the use of print materials. A pedometer-based Green Prescription was rated as being helpful in aiding physical activity. DISCUSSION: This study supports the importance of general practitioners’ initial role in prescribing physical activity for older adults and of ongoing telephone support for longer-term adherence. Incorporating a pedometer can be effective in helping low-active older adults initiate and maintain regular physical activity

    Using ACIS on the Chandra X-ray Observatory as a particle radiation monitor II

    The Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer is an instrument on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. CCDs are vulnerable to radiation damage, particularly by soft protons in the radiation belts and solar storms. The Chandra team has implemented procedures to protect ACIS during high-radiation events including autonomous protection triggered by an on-board radiation monitor. Elevated temperatures have reduced the effectiveness of the on-board monitor. The ACIS team has developed an algorithm which uses data from the CCDs themselves to detect periods of high radiation and a flight software patch to apply this algorithm is currently active on-board the instrument. In this paper, we explore the ACIS response to particle radiation through comparisons to a number of external measures of the radiation environment. We hope to better understand the efficiency of the algorithm as a function of the flux and spectrum of the particles and the time-profile of the radiation event.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Proc.
