Bounds for the discrete correlation of infinite sequences on k symbols and generalized Rudin-Shapiro sequences
Motivated by the known autocorrelation properties of the Rudin-Shapiro
sequence, we study the discrete correlation among infinite sequences over a
finite alphabet, where we just take into account whether two symbols are
identical. We show by combinatorial means that sequences cannot be "too"
different, and by an explicit construction generalizing the Rudin-Shapiro
sequence, we show that we can achieve the maximum possible difference.Comment: Improved Introduction and new Section 6 (Lovasz local lemma
Optical bistability for two-level atoms in a standing-wave cavity
Observations of optical bistability are reported for a system composed of multiple atomic beams passing through a high-finesse optical cavity. Both the transmitted power and the intracavity fluorescent intensity have been recorded as functions of incident laser power for zero cavity and atomic detunings. A quantitative study has been made of the evolution of the steady-state switching intensities from well below the critical onset of bistability to well above this point. The results show reasonable agreement with a Gaussian-beam theory of optical bistability, but systematic departures are noted
Brown bullhead catfish (ameiurus nebulosus) in Lake Taupo
Brown bullhead catfish (Ameiurus nebulosus) were first discovered in Lake Taupo during the early 1980s and are believed to have originated from an illegal liberation into the southern end of the lake. A native of the southern and eastern states of America, these catfish have been in New Zealand since 1878 and are now widespread throughout the Waikato region. In 1995 the population structure, abundance, age, growth rate and diet of catfish in the littoral zone (150 mm FL) and small fish. Low numbers of catfish across all size classes were caught from exposed sandy sites. The diet of catfish was size and habitat dependent. Small catfish (<150 mm FL) fed predominantly on chironomids, Cladocera, gastropods, caddisfly larvae, plant material and detritus. Larger catfish were found to prey to a greater extent on koura (Paranephrops planifrons), fish and terrestrial invertebrates
Imaging X-ray spectrometer
An X-ray spectrometer for providing imaging and energy resolution of an X-ray source is described. This spectrometer is comprised of a thick silicon wafer having an embedded matrix or grid of aluminum completely through the wafer fabricated, for example, by thermal migration. The aluminum matrix defines the walls of a rectangular array of silicon X-ray detector cells or pixels. A thermally diffused aluminum electrode is also formed centrally through each of the silicon cells with biasing means being connected to the aluminum cell walls and causes lateral charge carrier depletion between the cell walls so that incident X-ray energy causes a photoelectric reaction within the silicon producing collectible charge carriers in the form of electrons which are collected and used for imaging
Evolution from a molecular Rydberg gas to an ultracold plasma in a seeded supersonic expansion of NO
We report the spontaneous formation of a plasma from a gas of cold Rydberg
molecules. Double-resonant laser excitation promotes nitric oxide, cooled to 1
K in a seeded supersonic molecular beam, to single Rydberg states extending as
deep as 80 cm below the lowest ionization threshold. The density of
excited molecules in the illuminated volume is as high as 1 x 10
cm. This population evolves to produce prompt free electrons and a
durable cold plasma of electrons and intact NO ions.Comment: 4 pages (two column) 3 figures; smaller figure files, corrected typo
