Speaking Truth To Power: Why Energy Distribution, More Than Generation, Is Africa's Poverty Reduction Challenge

    Get PDF
This paper revisits the roles that energy plays in poverty reduction. First, while energy does not reduce poverty itself, it delivers energy services. These services can improve poor people's welfare both directly by enhancing their own productivity, education and health, and indirectly by changing the economy around them. The paper provides a simplified framework for thinking about these energy services, and then reviews the literature on their importance to poverty reduction. From this framework, we draw a series of three important conclusions about energy priorities and their implications for poverty reduction and development.Tackling energy poverty will have less to do with ambitious expansion of electricity capacity, and more to do with ambitious distribution of energy services to poor people.Expansion in centralized power generation serves industry, the services sector and already-connected households, before it serves the poor.Distributed, clean energy interventions are best suited to tackling energy poverty -- and poverty more generally

Is There A Future? Some Answers from Indian Philosophical and Narrative Literature

    Get PDF
The assumption in a conference talking about the future is I think that the future is something we can in fact talk about as distinct from the present and the past by definition in function and in ontological status Alas as I began to think more closely about these assumptions I was ready to call off the show Many Indian philosophers in fact argued that it is impossible to define the three times past present and future as distinct from each other some even went so far as to assert that no difference can be seen in the function of something that is past and something that is future Both past and future can be objects of knowledge and this is trickier both can act as causes giving rise to products This ability to cause something was seen by Buddhists and following them by Jains too as the very definition of existence an imaginary flower doesn t emit fragrance but a real flower does If past present and future things all can act as causes then they are all equally existen

Memorization And Mastery: Teaching Disciplinary Vocabulary In The Secondary Classroom

    Get PDF
This capstone posed the question, how can disciplinary vocabulary best be taught in a secondary classroom? As little direct research had previously been conducted on that topic, this curriculum design project drew from work in a variety of connected fields, such as the science of memory, second language acquisition and effective assessment practices and study habits, to create an original structure for instruction. Designed to complement rather than replace existing units, this capstone offers not a set of specific lessons but a set of detailed guidelines (grounded in theories such as depth of processing and the testing effect ) which can be adapted to enhance vocabulary instruction in any subject-area secondary classroom

Metering Wheel-Wire Track Wire Boom Deployment Mechanism

    Get PDF
The NASA MMS Spin Plane Double Probe (SDP) Deployer utilizes a helical path, rotating Metering Wheel and a spring loaded Wire "Holding" Track to pay out a "fixed end" 57 meter x 1.5 mm diameter Wire Boom stored between concentric storage cylinders. Unlike rotating spool type storage devices, the storage cylinders remain stationary, and the boom wire is uncoiled along the length of the cylinder via the rotation of the Metering Wheel. This uncoiling action avoids the need for slip-ring contacts since the ends of the wire can remain stationary. Conventional fixed electrical connectors (Micro-D type) are used to terminate to operational electronics

Human Security: A Strong Foundation for Multilateral Cooperation

    Get PDF
Human Security is the conceptual framework through which multilateral cooperation and common security amongst nations, which is now necessary, can be achieved. The article argues that the concept of human security has not reached its potential to catalyse progress yet. Human Security focuses on people-centered and context-specific responses to challenges. Several existential challenges such as a stable climate, healthy oceans, and pandemics cannot be addressed successfully at a national level. Even the SDGs require a human security integrated approach in order to overcome the inefficiency of silos. Change is needed quickly. Human security can help make that change
