The Dematerialization Potential of the Australian Economy
In this paper we test the long term dematerialization potential for Australia in terms of materials, energy, and water use as well as CO2 emissions, by introducing concrete targets for major sectors. Major improvements in the construction and housing, transport and mobility, and food and nutrition sectors in the Australian economy, if coupled with significant reductions in the resource export sectors, would substantially improve the current material, energy and emission intensive pattern of Australia’s production and consumption system. Using the Australian Stocks and Flows framework we model all system interactions to understand the contributions of large scale changes in technology, infrastructure and lifestyle to decoupling the economy from the environment. The modelling shows a considerable reduction in natural resource use, while energy and water use decrease to a much lesser extent because a reduction in natural resource consumption creates a trade-off in energy use. It also shows that trade and economic growth may continue, but at a reduced rate compared with a business-as-usual scenario. The findings of our modelling are discussed in light of the large body of literature on dematerialization, eco-efficiency and rebound effects that may occur when efficiency is increased. We argue that Australia cannot rely on incremental efficiency gains but has to undergo a sustainability transition to achieve a low carbon future to keep in line with the international effort to avoid climate change and resource use conflicts. Historical Calibration of a Water Account System
Models that are used for future based scenarios should be calibrated with historical water supply and use data. Historical water records in Australia are discontinuous, incomplete and often incongruently disaggregated. We present a systematic method to produce a coherent reconstruction of the historical provision and consumption of water in Victorian catchments. This is demonstrated using WAS: an accounting and simulation tool that tracks the stocks and flows of physical quantities relating to the water system. The WAS is also part of, and informed by, an integrated framework of stocks and flows calculators for simulating long-term interactions between other sectors of the physical economy. Both the WAS and related frameworks consider a wide scope of inputs regarding population, land use, energy and water. The physical history of the water sector is reconstructed by integrating water data with these information sources using a data modelling process that resolves conflicts and deduces missing information. A Water Accounting System for Strategic Water Management
This paper describes a water accounting system (WAS) that has been developed as an innovative new tool for strategic long-term water management. The WAS incorporates both disaggregated water use and availability, provides a comprehensive and consistent historical database, and can integrate climate and hydrological model outputs for the exploration of scenarios. It has been established and tested for the state of Victoria in Australia, and can be extended to cover other or all regions of Australia. The WAS is implemented using stock-and-flow dynamics, currently employing major river basins as the spatial units and a yearly time step. While this system shares features with system dynamics, learning is enhanced and strategic management of water resources is improved by application of a Design Approach and the structure of the WAS. We compare the WAS with other relevant accounting systems and outline its benefits, particularly the potential for resolving tensions between water supply and demand. Australia’s Resource Use Trajectories
Australia’s export oriented large natural resources sectors of agriculture and mining, the ways in which large scale services such as nutrition, water, housing, transport and mobility, and energy are organized, as well as the consumption patterns of Australia’s wealthy urban households, create a unique pattern of overall resource use in Australia. In an attempt to contribute to a new environmental information system compatible with economic accounts, we represent Australia’s resource use by employing standard biophysical indicators for resource use developed within the OECD context. We are looking at the last three decades of resource use and the economic, social and environmental implications. We also discuss scenarios of future resource use patterns based on a stocks and flows model of the Australian economy. We argue that current extractive economic patterns have contributed to the recent economic boom in Australia but will eventually lead to negative social and environmental outcomes. HST STIS Ultraviolet Spectral Evidence for Outflow in Extreme Narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxies: I. Data and Analysis
We present HST STIS observations of two extreme NLS1s, IRAS 13224-3809 and 1H
0707-495. The spectra are characterized by very blue continua, broad, strongly
blueshifted high-ionization lines (including \ion{C}{4} and \ion{N}{5}), and
narrow, symmetric intermediate- (including \ion{C}{3}], \ion{Si}{3}],
\ion{Al}{3}) and low-ionization (e.g., \ion{Mg}{2}) lines centered at their
rest wavelengths. The emission-line profiles suggest that the high-ionization
lines are produced in a wind, and the intermediate- and low-ionization lines
are produced in low-velocity gas associated with the accretion disk or base of
the wind. In this paper, we present the analysis of the spectra from these two
objects; in a companion paper we present photoionization analysis and a toy
dynamical model for the wind. The highly asymmetric profile of \ion{C}{4}
suggests that it is dominated by emission from the wind, so we develop a
template for the wind from the \ion{C}{4} line. We model the bright emission
lines in the spectra using a combination of this template, and a narrow,
symmetric line centered at the rest wavelength. We also analyzed a comparison
sample of HST spectra from 14 additional NLS1s, and construct a correlation
matrix of emission line and continuum properties. A number of strong
correlations were observed, including several involving the asymmetry of the

X-ray properties of NGC 300. I, Global properties of X-ray point sources and their optical counterparts
We present X-ray properties of NGC 300 point sources, extracted from 66 ks of XMM-Newton data taken in 2000 December and 2001 January. A total of 163 sources were detected in the energy range of 0.3–6 keV. We report on the global properties of the sources detected inside the D 25
optical disk, such as the hardness ratio and X-ray fluxes, and on the properties of their optical counterparts found in B, V, and R images from the 2.2 m MPG/ESO telescope. Furthermore, we cross-correlate the X-ray sources with SIMBAD, the USNO-A2.0 catalog, and radio catalogues
