    How “Point Blindness” Dilutes the Value of Stock Market Reports

    The stock index “point” is a focal component of financial news reports. Though many reports draw attention to point changes in major indices, few people realize that the value of a stock index “point” changes frequently. We call this perceptual phenomenon “point blindness.” We examine causes of point blindness and then propose alternate ways of reporting stock market information to counter it. The alternatives are easy to implement and can help citizens draw important inferences about stock values.     Quantitative Nanofriction Characterization of Corrugated Surfaces by Atomic Force Microscopy

    Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is a suitable tool to perform tribological characterization of materials down to the nanometer scale. An important aspect in nanofriction measurements of corrugated samples is the local tilt of the surface, which affects the lateral force maps acquired with the AFM. This is one of the most important problems of state-of-the-art nanotribology, making difficult a reliable and quantitative characterization of real corrugated surfaces. A correction of topographic spurious contributions to lateral force maps is thus needed for corrugated samples. In this paper we present a general approach to the topographic correction of AFM lateral force maps and we apply it in the case of multi-asperity adhesive contact. We describe a complete protocol for the quantitative characterization of the frictional properties of corrugated systems in the presence of surface adhesion using the AFM.Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures, RevTex 4, submitted to Journal of Applied Physic

    The cross section for low mass dissociation at LHC energies is estimated in a partly data driven approach. The result is compared to the Monte Carlo estimate from the QGSJET-II-03 model used by the TOTEM experiment in the determination of σtot\sigma_{tot} via the luminosity-independent method. Significant differences are found and possible consequences are explored and discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    The total cross section for proton-proton interactions at the FCC

    The lower and upper limits of the total cross section (σtot\sigma_{tot}) at the projected FCC-hh have been estimated. A lower limit has been estimated using dispersion relations in combination with recent LHC data of σtot\sigma_{tot} and the ρ\rho-parameter. The upper limit has been estimated using the standard ln2(s)ln^{2}(s) evolution of σtot\sigma_{tot}. Some models giving values in between those limits are also discussed

    Identifying and Mitigating Caregiver Burnout: The Role of Adult Day Social Workers

    This qualitative research study will explore the role of adult day social workers in identifying and mitigating caregiver burnout. To collect data for this study, eight semi-structured interviews with adult day social workers were completed to analyze their experience with caregivers, their role in recognizing burnout and their response to caregivers experiencing burnout. A grounded theory methodology approach will be used to analyze data. This method will use an open-coding process that will lead to selective coding, which will assist in identifying and validating themes and concepts from the participant’s responses to interview questions. The findings from this study indicate the strong role adult day social workers play in identifying burnout among caregivers by providing support that aligns with best practices in the adult day setting. Further research in this area will also assist social workers in the continuation of best practice development and to be effective in providing the needed support of caregivers on a mental, psychological, physical and emotional levels

    From the 2002 data taking with a neutral kaon beam extracted from the CERN-SPS, the NA48/1 experiment observed 97 Ξ0Σ+μνˉμ\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu} candidates with a background contamination of 30.8±4.230.8 \pm 4.2 events. From this sample, the BR(Ξ0Σ+μνˉμ\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu}) is measured to be (2.17±0.32stat±0.17syst)×106(2.17 \pm 0.32_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm 0.17_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-6}
