Phenology of Annulus Formation in Walleye and Smallmouth Bass Otoliths
Walleye Sander vitreus and smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu were sampled monthly (May-October) from Lake Sharpe, South Dakota during 2006 and 2007 to estimate the timing of otolith annulus formation and to evaluate the influence of fish age, sex, and sample location (walleye only) on the timing and detection of annulus formation. Timing of annulus formation was evaluated using marginal increment analysis. Walleye samples were stratified by age, sex, and sample location (i.e., upper and lower Lake Sharpe) and smallmouth bass samples were stratified by age and sex. Monthly mean marginal increment measurements for both species generally increased from May to June, declined in July, and slowly increased from August to October. Although monthly differences in marginal increment measurements across analysis strata were rarely consistent, July generally had the lowest mean marginal increment across species and strata, suggesting that annulus formation in walleye and smallmouth bass in Lake Sharpe likely occurs in July. The lack of differences in timing of annulus formation across species-specific strata was surprising given the well-known influences of age, sex, and water temperature on somatic growth. Mirror Dark Matter and Core Density of Galaxies
We present a particle physics realization of a recent suggestion by Spergel
and Steinhardt that collisional but dissipationless dark matter may resolve the
core density problem in dark matter-dominated galaxies such as the dwarf
galaxies. The realization is the asymmetric mirror universe model introduced to
explain the neutrino puzzles and the microlensing anomaly. The mirror baryons
are the dark matter particles with the desired properties. The time scales are
right for resolution of the core density problem and formation of mirror stars
(MACHOs observed in microlensing experiments). The mass of the region
homogenized by Silk damping is between a dwarf and a large galaxy.Comment: 9 pages, LaTex. The present version shows that atomic scattering
inherent in the mirror model can solve the core density problem without the
need for an extra U(1) discussed in the original version; all conclusions are

Classifying LISA gravitational wave burst signals using Bayesian evidence
We consider the problem of characterisation of burst sources detected with
the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) using the multi-modal nested
sampling algorithm, MultiNest. We use MultiNest as a tool to search for
modelled bursts from cosmic string cusps, and compute the Bayesian evidence
associated with the cosmic string model. As an alternative burst model, we
consider sine-Gaussian burst signals, and show how the evidence ratio can be
used to choose between these two alternatives. We present results from an
application of MultiNest to the last round of the Mock LISA Data Challenge, in
which we were able to successfully detect and characterise all three of the
cosmic string burst sources present in the release data set. We also present
results of independent trials and show that MultiNest can detect cosmic string
signals with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as low as ~7 and sine-Gaussian signals
with SNR as low as ~8. In both cases, we show that the threshold at which the
sources become detectable coincides with the SNR at which the evidence ratio

Neuropathologic basis of frontotemporal dementia in progressive supranuclear palsy.
BackgroundProgressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by neuronal loss in the extrapyramidal system with pathologic accumulation of tau in neurons and glia. The most common clinical presentation of PSP, referred to as Richardson syndrome, is that of atypical parkinsonism with vertical gaze palsy, axial rigidity, and frequent falls. Although cognitive deficits in PSP are often ascribed to subcortical dysfunction, a subset of patients has dementia with behavioral features similar to the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia. In this study we aimed to identify the clinical and pathological characteristics of PSP presenting with frontotemporal dementia.MethodsIn this study, we compared clinical and pathologic characteristics of 31 patients with PSP with Richardson syndrome with 15 patients with PSP with frontotemporal dementia. For pathological analysis, we used semiquantitative methods to assess neuronal and glial lesions with tau immunohistochemistry, as well image analysis of tau burden using digital microscopic methods.ResultsWe found greater frontal and temporal neocortical neuronal tau pathology in PSP with frontotemporal dementia compared with PSP with Richardson syndrome. White matter tau pathology was also greater in PSP with frontotemporal dementia than PSP with Richardson syndrome. Genetic and demographic factors were not associated with atypical distribution of tau pathology in PSP with frontotemporal dementia.ConclusionsThe results confirm the subset of cognitive-predominant PSP mimicking frontotemporal dementia in PSP. PSP with frontotemporal dementia has distinct clinical features that differ from PSP with Richardson syndrome, as well as differences in distribution and density of tau pathology. © 2019 The Authors. Wannier-Stark ladders in one-dimensional elastic systems
The optical analogues of Bloch oscillations and their associated
Wannier-Stark ladders have been recently analyzed. In this paper we propose an
elastic realization of these ladders, employing for this purpose the torsional
vibrations of specially designed one-dimensional elastic systems. We have
measured, for the first time, the ladder wave amplitudes, which are not
directly accessible either in the quantum mechanical or optical cases. The wave
amplitudes are spatially localized and coincide rather well with theoretically
predicted amplitudes. The rods we analyze can be used to localize different

Artemis Curation: Preparing for Sample Return from the Lunar South Pole
Space Policy Directive-1 mandates that the United States will lead the return of humans to the Moon for long-term exploration and utilization, followed by human missions to Mars and other destinations. In addition, the Vice President stated that It is the stated policy of this administration and the United States of America to return American astronauts to the Moon within the next five years, that is, by 2024. These efforts, under the umbrella of the recently formed Artemis Program, include such historic goals as the flight of the first woman to the Moon and the exploration of the lunar south-polar region. Among the top priorities of the Artemis Program is the return of a suite of geologic samples, providing new and significant opportunities for progressing lunar science and human exploration. In particular, successful sample return is necessary for understanding the history of volatiles in the Solar System and the evolution of the Earth-Moon system, fully constraining the hazards of the lunar polar environment for astronauts, and providing the necessary data for constraining the abundance and distribution of resources for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). Here we summarize the ef-forts of the Astromaterials Acquisition and Curation Office (hereafter referred to as the Curation Office) to ensure the success of Artemis sample return (per NASA Policy Directive (NPD) 7100.10E)
Mirror Dark Matter
There appear to be three challenges that any theory of dark matter must face:
(i) why is of the same order as ? (ii) what
are the near solar mass objects () observed by the MACHO
microlensing project ? and (iii) understanding the shallow core density profile
of the halos of dwarf as well as low surface brightness galaxies. The popular
cold dark matter candidates, the SUSY LSP and the axion fail to meet these
challenges. We argue that in the mirror model suggested recently to explain the
neutrino anomalies, the mirror baryons being 15-20 times heavier than familiar
baryons, can play the role of the cold dark matter and provide reasonable

Gaussian random waves in elastic media
Similar to the Berry conjecture of quantum chaos we consider elastic analogue
which incorporates longitudinal and transverse elastic displacements with
corresponding wave vectors. Based on that we derive the correlation functions
for amplitudes and intensities of elastic displacements. Comparison to numerics
