Closedness type regularity conditions for surjectivity results involving the sum of two maximal monotone operators
In this note we provide regularity conditions of closedness type which
guarantee some surjectivity results concerning the sum of two maximal monotone
operators by using representative functions. The first regularity condition we
give guarantees the surjectivity of the monotone operator , where and and are maximal monotone operators on
the reflexive Banach space . Then, this is used to obtain sufficient
conditions for the surjectivity of and for the situation when belongs
to the range of . Several special cases are discussed, some of them
delivering interesting byproducts.Comment: 11 pages, no figure
Derivation of fluid dynamics from kinetic theory with the 14--moment approximation
We review the traditional derivation of the fluid-dynamical equations from
kinetic theory according to Israel and Stewart. We show that their procedure to
close the fluid-dynamical equations of motion is not unique. Their approach
contains two approximations, the first being the so-called 14-moment
approximation to truncate the single-particle distribution function. The second
consists in the choice of equations of motion for the dissipative currents.
Israel and Stewart used the second moment of the Boltzmann equation, but this
is not the only possible choice. In fact, there are infinitely many moments of
the Boltzmann equation which can serve as equations of motion for the
dissipative currents. All resulting equations of motion have the same form, but
the transport coefficients are different in each case.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, typos fixed and discussions added; EPJA: Topical

Maximally incompressible neutron star matter
Relativistic kinetic theory, based on the Grad method of moments as developed
by Israel and Stewart, is used to model viscous and thermal dissipation in
neutron star matter and determine an upper limit on the maximum mass of neutron
stars. In the context of kinetic theory, the equation of state must satisfy a
set of constraints in order for the equilibrium states of the fluid to be
thermodynamically stable and for perturbations from equilibrium to propagate
causally via hyperbolic equations. Application of these constraints to neutron
star matter restricts the stiffness of the most incompressible equation of
state compatible with causality to be softer than the maximally incompressible
equation of state that results from requiring the adiabatic sound speed to not
exceed the speed of light. Using three equations of state based on experimental
nucleon-nucleon scattering data and properties of light nuclei up to twice
normal nuclear energy density, and the kinetic theory maximally incompressible
equation of state at higher density, an upper limit on the maximum mass of
neutron stars averaging 2.64 solar masses is derived.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Hierarchy of Scales in Language Dynamics
Methods and insights from statistical physics are finding an increasing variety of applications where one seeks to understand the emergent properties of a complex interacting system. One such area concerns the dynamics of language at a variety of levels of description, from the behaviour of individual agents learning simple artificial languages from each other, up to changes in the structure of languages shared by large groups of speakers over historical timescales. In this Colloquium, we survey a hierarchy of scales at which language and linguistic behaviour can be described, along with the main progress in understanding that has been made at each of them − much of which has come from the statistical physics community. We argue that future developments may arise by linking the different levels of the hierarchy together in a more coherent fashion, in particular where this allows more effective use of rich empirical data sets
Basic Methods for Computing Special Functions
This paper gives an overview of methods for the numerical evaluation of special functions, that is, the functions that arise in many problems from mathematical physics, engineering, probability theory, and other applied sciences. We consider in detail a selection of basic methods which are
frequently used in the numerical evaluation of special functions: converging and asymptotic series, including Chebyshev expansions, linear recurrence relations, and numerical quadrature. Several other methods are available and some of these will be discussed in less detail. We give examples of recent software for special functions where these methods are used. We mention a list of new publications on computational aspects of special functions available on our website
