A converse to the Grace--Walsh--Szeg\H{o} theorem

We prove that the symmetrizer of a permutation group preserves stability of a polynomial if and only if the group is orbit homogeneous. A consequence is that the hypothesis of permutation invariance in the Grace-Walsh-Szeg\H{o} Coincidence Theorem cannot be relaxed. In the process we obtain a new characterization of the \emph{Grace-like polynomials} introduced by D. Ruelle, and prove that the class of such polynomials can be endowed with a natural multiplication.Comment: 7 page

Experiencing Grace: A Review of the Empirical Literature

Positive psychologists have used science to understand many virtues but have only just started to study grace, recently defined as ‘ . . . the gift of acceptance given unconditionally and voluntarily to an undeserving person by an unobligated giver’. The purpose of the current article is to provide a systematic review of all empirical studies (published and unpublished) on grace. Broadly, the empirical study of grace has focused on what people believe and how people experience both divine and human grace. Additionally, empirical attention has shifted to explore outcomes of grace-based interventions (e.g., congregation-wide interventions, marital interventions). In general, beliefs and experiences of grace were associated with (a) positive mental health outcomes, (b) religiosity, (c) virtue development, and (d) interpersonal functioning. Human grace has not been extensively explored and divine grace has been studied mostly among Christians; future studies should address these limitations and explore causal relationships

Faith and homosexuality: grace, religious problem-solving styles and the internalized homophobia of homosexuals

    Get PDF
The current research examines the grace-orientation and problem-solving styles of gay and lesbian people of faith relative to their relationship with God and the extent, if any, of their internalized homonegativity. This issue was investigated using psychological measures involving a) the style of religious problem-solving, b) internalized homonegativity, c) feelings of shame and guilt and d) personal experiences of grace. Statistical analyses found that having less homonegativity toward oneself and the disclosure of homosexuality is associated with higher levels of experienced grace and lower feelings of shame and guilt. Collaborative and deferring religious problem-solving styles correlated positively with both experienced grace and awareness of grace. Additionally, personal feelings of guilt are significantly positively correlated with the awareness of grace. The lower feelings of shame, guilt, and internalized homonegativity suggest that an adaptive integration of sexuality and spirituality is positively correlated with experiences of grace

Effect of lateral displacement of a high-altitude platform on cellular interference and handover

    Get PDF
A method for predicting movements in cellular coverage caused by lateral drift of a high-altitude platform (a quasi-stationary platform in the stratosphere) is developed. Cells are produced by spot beams generated by horn-type antennas on the platform. It is shown how the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) across these cells varies when the antenna payload is steered to accommodate the lateral movement of the platform. The geometry of the antenna beam footprint on the ground is first developed and then applied to a system of many cochannel beams. Pointing strategies are examined, where the pointing angle is calculated to keep, for example, a center cell or an edge cell in the same nominal position before and after the platform drift, and the CIR distribution is calculated. It is shown that the optimum pointing angle depends on the desired level of CIR across the service area, typically lying between 3 +/- 0.75 degrees for a platform drift of 2'km and corresponding to a cell in the middle ring. It is shown that it is necessary for a significant proportion of users to perform a handover to maintain a given CIR after platform drift. The analysis reveals that there is an optimum pointing angle that minimizes the probability of handover for a particular value of drift and CIR

    Canonical Formulation of IIB D-branes

    Get PDF
We find Wess-Zumino actions for kappa invariant IIB D-branes in the explicit form. A simple and compact expression is obtained by the grace of spinor variables which are defined as power series of differential forms. Once explicit form of the Wess-Zumino actions is determined, global supersymmetry (SUSY) charges and constraint equations including local supersymmetry (kappa) generators can be determined. The SUSY algebra and the central charges are also calculated explicitly.Comment: 22 pages, Latex, some comments and references are added. to appear in NP
