Scanning probe microscopy imaging of metallic nanocontacts

We show scanning probe microscopy measurements of metallic nanocontacts between controlled electromigration cycles. The nanowires used for the thinning process are fabricated by shadow evaporation. The highest resolution obtained using scanning force microscopy is about 3 nm. During the first few electromigration cycles the overall slit structure of the nanocontact is formed. The slit first passes along grain boundaries and then at a later stage vertically splits grains in the course of consuming them. We find that first the whole wire is heated and later during the thinning process as the slit forms the current runs over several smaller contacts which needs less power.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Cohort differences in the development of civic engagement during adolescence

Investigating whether changing societal circumstances have altered the development of civic engagement, this study compared developmental changes from mid- to late adolescence (i.e., age 15–18) across two cohorts of representative Swiss samples (born in 1991, N = 1258, Mage T1 = 15.30, 54% female, 33% migration background representing diverse ethnicities; born in 2000, N = 930, Mage T1 = 15.32, 51% female; 33% migration background). Findings from latent multigroup models revealed similar levels in attitudes about social justice in both cohorts, remaining stable over time. Adolescents reported lower levels of political efficacy and informal helping in the cohort born in 2000. Both aspects slightly increased during adolescence. Informal helping had a steeper increase in the 1991 compared to the 2000 cohort, suggesting developmental differences between cohorts

Damping of a nanomechanical oscillator strongly coupled to a quantum dot

We present theoretical and experimental results on the mechanical damping of an atomic force microscope cantilever strongly coupled to a self-assembled InAs quantum dot. When the cantilever oscillation amplitude is large, its motion dominates the charge dynamics of the dot which in turn leads to nonlinear, amplitude-dependent damping of the cantilever. We observe highly asymmetric lineshapes of Coulomb blockade peaks in the damping that reflect the degeneracy of energy levels on the dot, in excellent agreement with our strong coupling theory. Furthermore, we predict that excited state spectroscopy is possible by studying the damping versus oscillation amplitude, in analogy to varying the amplitude of an ac gate voltage.Comment: 4+ pages, 4 figure

Informationsaustausch zwischen schulbasiert arbeitenden Ergotherapeuten sowie Ergotherapeutinnen und Eltern von Kindern mit Einschränkungen : Strategien zur Förderung

Darstellung des Themas: Ergotherapeuten und Ergotherapeutinnen, die schulbasiert arbeiten, haben keine automatischen Berührungspunkte mit den Eltern. Diese sind in Bezug auf ihre Kinder Experten und stellen einen wichtigen Teil der Klientel in der Pädiatrie dar. Ein Informationsaustausch zwischen Ergotherapeuten sowie Ergotherapeutinnen und Eltern führt zu besseren Therapieergebnissen. Ziel: Diese Arbeit zeigt Strategien auf, die den Informationsaustausch von schulbasiert arbeitenden Ergotherapeuten und Ergotherapeutinnen mit Eltern von Kindern mit Einschränkungen fördern. Methode: Anhand von definierten Ein- und Ausschlusskriterien wurde eine systematische Literaturrecherche durchgeführt. Daraus resultierten drei Hauptstudien, die kritisch beurteilt wurden. Die Ergebnisse wurden den Schritten im Occupational Therapy Intervention Process Modell (OTIPM) zugeordnet und diskutiert. Ergebnisse Es konnten 18 Strategien zur Förderung des Informationsaustauschs identifiziert und folgenden Kategorien zugeordnet werden: Haltungen, geleitete Vorgehensweisen, schriftlicher Kontakt, direkter Kontakt und Hilfsmittel. Schlussfolgerung Während des gesamten Therapieprozesses ist die Orientierung an einer geleiteten Vorgehensweise unterstützend. Dabei sollten Ergotherapeuten und Ergotherapeutinnen eine individuell auf die Situation und Bedürfnisse der Familie angepasste Methode wählen

nDsbD: a redox interaction hub in the Escherichia coli periplasm

Abstract.: DsbD is a redox-active protein of the inner Escherichia coli membrane possessing an N-terminal (nDsbD) and a C-terminal (cDsbD) periplasmic domain. nDsbD interacts with four different redox proteins involved in the periplasmic disulfide isomerization and in the cytochrome c maturation systems. We review here the studies that led to the structural characterization of all soluble DsbD domains involved and, most importantly, of trapped disulfide intermediate complexes of nDsbD with three of its four redox partners. These results revealed the structural features enabling nDsbD, a ‘redox hub' with an immunoglobulin-like fold, to interact efficiently with its different thioredoxin-like partner
