Mitochondrial DNA mutations in renal disease: an overview
Kidneys have a high energy demand to facilitate the reabsorption of the glomerular filtrate. For this reason, renal cells have a high
density of mitochondria. Mitochondrial cytopathies can be the result of a mutation in both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA.
Mitochondrial dysfunction can lead to a variety of renal manifestations. Examples of tubular manifestations are renal Fanconi
Syndrome, which is often found in patients diagnosed with Kearns-Sayre and Pearson’s marrow-pancreas syndrome, and distal
tubulopathies, which result in electrolyte disturbances such as hypomagnesemia. Nephrotic syndrome can be a glomerular
manifestation of mitochondrial dysfunction and is typically associated with focal segmental glomerular sclerosis on histology.
Tubulointerstitial nephritis can also be seen in mitochondrial cytopathies and may lead to end-stage renal disease. The underlying
mechanisms of these cytopathies remain incompletely understood; therefore, current therapies focus mainly on symptom relief. A
better understanding of the molecular disease mechanisms is critical in order to improve treatments
YouTube usage by Spanish tourist destinations as a tool to communicate their identities and brands
Videos are influential image creators and video-sharing sites like YouTube offer new opportunities to DMOs to communicate the identity and the brand of the destinations they represent. The aim of this article was to gain an insight into how Spanish DMOs use YouTube to communicate their promotional videos and to study whether these videos communicate brands through two main elements: attraction factors and emotional values. The research methodology combined an analysis of two important communicative variables of the official YouTube channels (interactivity and visibility) of the analysed destinations with a content analysis of the last 25 videos uploaded to those channels by the DMOs. On the one hand, results showed that the usage of YouTube by Spanish tourist destinations was widespread but with some limitations. The contents of the videos were mainly informative, and this helped to communicate attraction factors rather than emotional values. On the other hand, the presence of brand values is usually related to good results in terms of visibility and interactivity. Transport of dissolved Si from soil to river: a conceptual mechanistic model
This paper reviews the processes which determine the concentrations of dissolved silicon (DSi) in soil water and proposes a mechanistic model for understanding the transport of Si through a typical podzol soil to the river. DSi present in natural waters originates from the dissolution of mineral and amorphous Si sources in the soil. However, the DSi concentration in natural waters will be dependent on both dissolution and deposition/precipitation processes. The net DSi export is controlled by soil composition like (mineralogy and saturated porosity) as well as water composition (pH, concentrations of organic acids, CO2 and electrolytes). These state variables together with production, polymerization and adsorption equations constitute a mechanistic framework determining DSi concentrations. For a typical soil profile in a temperate climate, we discuss how the values of these key controls differ in each soil horizon and how it influences the DSi transport. Additionally, the impact of external forcings such as seasonal climatic variations and land use, is evaluated. This model is a first step to better understand Si transport processes in soils and should be further validated with field measurements
