Fusing Administrative Data to Combat the Opioid Crisis

    Get PDF
Opioid-related overdose deaths remain the leading cause of unintentional injury fatalities in the United States. State lawmakers have responded to this crisis by establishing a regulatory environment that extends various legal protections to persons who may help save the life of someone experiencing an opioid-related overdose. Most states now protect specific parties (e.g., doctors, pharmacists, first responders, laypersons) from civil or criminal liability who prescribe, dispense, possess or administer an opioid antagonist in accordance with the provisions of the state’s law. In addition to standing orders that facilitate access to opioid antagonists, many states offer legal protection to “Good Samaritans” seeking medical and emergency assistance for a person experiencing an overdose. Some states additionally mandate that addiction-treatment services be offered in conjunction with the dispensing of an opioid antagonist, whereas others designate revenue to purchase opiate antagonists or to fund treatment programs. Little is known about the potential impact of such regulatory actions on the opioid crisis. RTI’s Data Fusion Center seeks to meet this need by combining administrative data across sources and systems to inform research and policy. The current paper describes the Data Fusion Center and presents preliminary results from a study that predicts opioid-related overdose deaths based on the existence and strength of opioid-related state laws among 50 states from 2006 to 2016. Policy data were webscraped from state agencies, systematically coded, and associated with target outcomes sourced from CDC. Study findings may help inform lawmakers and stakeholders in prioritizing data-driven policy responses to the opioid crisis

Grammar in the French elementary school: a teaching under tension ...

    Get PDF
The question of the teaching of the language in the school is sensitive in France and trigger regularly debates and controversies that go beyond the school. Grammar crystallises such controversy, at linguistic, didactic, pedagogic, political, institutional, and social levels. Indeed, we are dealing with an issue under tension. This contribution will seek to interrogate and combine two dimensions, the knowledge prescribed, and the knowledge taught. Two axes will articulate such an approach: first, from a diachronic viewpoint, we will present the analysis of some of the institutional texts released over the last two decades to understand the Ministry’s attempts in a very centralised national context; and second, from a synchronique viewpoint, drawing on recent research outcomes, we will try to shed light to the pedagogic reality of two groups, one in CE2 (8-9 years of age) and one in CM1 (9-10 years of age). Grammar tasks proposed to the pupils will be analysed, as well as the institutional rules set up in the class to explain the language, and the different steps set up in the textbooks, which are meant to follow the official syllabuses (those published in 2020). From these elements, we will attempt to shed light to the points in tension and see the paradoxes that cross the teaching of the language in Language Arts in the French context

Intercultural communication between African-American and Zimbabwean women: focussing on identity and survival/liberation

    Get PDF
African-American and Zimbabwean women live and do theology from different cultural and contextual worldviews, although they share the same skin colour. The narrative stories of three Zimbabwean and one African-American Christian women and how they share inter culturally the struggle of identity, identity-formation and survival/liberation while maintaining their cultural uniqueness form die basis of this research project. These shared experiences can offer significant contributions to the broader feminist liberation theology. The Christian faith has served as a shared source of sustenance, resilience, healing and renewal as well as a shared source for constructive and affirming identity-formation for Zimbabwean and African-American women. Consequently, building strong relationships that address contextual issues facing women of Africa and the Diaspora, as suggested by this research, offers significant opportunities for eliminating some of the barriers and boundaries that prevent Zimbabwean and African- American women from enjoying the quality of life that God meant for everyone.Christian Spirituality, Church History and MissiologyM.Th.

    Get PDF

A case study of management shortcomings: Lessons from the B737-Max aviation accidents

    Get PDF
This case study looked into the shortcomings in of Boeing’s upper management in the engineering and fielding of the B737-Max. Under pressure to build a plane with identical flying characteristics to the existing B737 family, Boeing included modifications but purposely concealed those changes from regulators and pilots. This decision resulted in fatal accidents in 2018 and 2019 and caused the deaths of 346 passengers. Unlike previous aviation accidents, these mishaps were entirely preventable and a direct result of Boeing’s organizational failures and management shortcomings. This case study analyzed the behavior, decision making process, and reasons which led Boeing to push for the certification of the B737-Max despite these known flaws in the design. Additionally, this poster studied the consequences and punitive actions that followed the investigation of the two crashes. The poster concludes by offering recommendations to the aviation industry on how accidents such as this can be avoided in the future
