Beam Test of BTeV Pixel Detectors
The silicon pixel vertex detector is one of the key elements of the BTeV
spectrometer. Detector prototypes were tested in a beam at Fermilab. We report
here on the measured spatial resolution as a function of the incident angles
for different sensor-readout electronics combinations. We compare the results

Territorial Tactics: The Socio-spatial Significance of Private Policing Strategies in Cape Town
This paper analyses the policing strategies of private security companies operating in urban space. An existing literature has considered the variety of ways that territory becomes of fundamental importance in the work of public police forces. However, this paper examines territory in the context of private security companies. Drawing on empirical research in Cape Town, it examines how demarcated territories become key subjects in private policing. Private security companies are responsible for a relatively small section of the city, while in contrast the public police ultimately have to see city space as a whole. Hence, private policing strategy becomes one of displacement, especially of so-called undesirables yielding a patchworked public space associated with private enclaves of consumption. The conclusions signal the historical resonances and comparative implications of these political-legal-security dynamics. © 2013 Urban Studies Journal Limited
Symmetric and asymmetric action integration during cooperative object manipulation in virtual environments
Cooperation between multiple users in a virtual environment (VE) can take place at one of three levels. These
are defined as where users can perceive each other (Level 1), individually change the scene (Level 2), or
simultaneously act on and manipulate the same object (Level 3). Despite representing the highest level of
cooperation, multi-user object manipulation has rarely been studied. This paper describes a behavioral
experiment in which the piano movers' problem (maneuvering a large object through a restricted space) was
used to investigate object manipulation by pairs of participants in a VE. Participants' interactions with the object
were integrated together either symmetrically or asymmetrically. The former only allowed the common
component of participants' actions to take place, but the latter used the mean. Symmetric action integration was
superior for sections of the task when both participants had to perform similar actions, but if participants had to
move in different ways (e.g., one maneuvering themselves through a narrow opening while the other traveled
down a wide corridor) then asymmetric integration was superior. With both forms of integration, the extent to
which participants coordinated their actions was poor and this led to a substantial cooperation overhead (the
reduction in performance caused by having to cooperate with another person)
Stratified spatiotemporal chaos in anisotropic reaction-diffusion systems
Numerical simulations of two dimensional pattern formation in an anisotropic
bistable reaction-diffusion medium reveal a new dynamical state, stratified
spatiotemporal chaos, characterized by strong correlations along one of the
principal axes. Equations that describe the dependence of front motion on the
angle illustrate the mechanism leading to stratified chaos
Beam Test Results of the BTeV Silicon Pixel Detector
The results of the BTeV silicon pixel detector beam test carried out at
Fermilab in 1999-2000 are reported. The pixel detector spatial resolution has
been studied as a function of track inclination, sensor bias, and readout

Performance of prototype BTeV silicon pixel detectors in a high energy pion beam
The silicon pixel vertex detector is a key element of the BTeV spectrometer.
Sensors bump-bonded to prototype front-end devices were tested in a high energy
pion beam at Fermilab. The spatial resolution and occupancies as a function of
the pion incident angle were measured for various sensor-readout combinations.
The data are compared with predictions from our Monte Carlo simulation and very

Artificial Neural Networks for Classification in Metabolomic Studies of Whole Cells Using 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
We report the successful classification, by artificial neural networks (ANNs), of 1H NMR spectroscopic data recorded on whole-cell culture samples of four different lung carcinoma cell lines, which display different drug resistance patterns. The robustness of the approach was demonstrated by its ability to classify the cell line correctly in 100% of cases, despite the demonstrated presence of operator-induced sources of variation, and irrespective of which spectra are used for training and for validation. The study demonstrates the potential of ANN for lung carcinoma classification in realistic situations
